Fictionation: Development and Evaluation of an Idea Generation Tool Grounded on Design Fiction
Idea generation requires the generation of many, various and novel ideas, and has the greatest impact on the quality of the final design solution within the design process. The literature offers numerous design methods and tools available for the use of designers in idea generation, though criticisms include the shortcomings of methods in supporting illogical thinking, as well as the lack of studies that test the effects of these methods on idea generation. This paper presents Fictionation, a card-based idea generation tool that seeks to increase novelty and variety by fostering an environment of creative invention based on design fiction and illogical thinking. The effects of the tool on the novelty and explored variety scores of the design outputs are investigated with an experimental study among undergraduate industrial design students. The results indicate that the Fictionation tool increases the novelty and variety of the ideas, and also has effects on improving academic performance and creating a more homogeneous student group.Pamukkale UniversityThis study was conducted as part of a PhD research carried out at Middle East Technical University, Department of Industrial Design. A Comparative Analysis of Acitretin and Methotrexate in the Treatment of Lichen Planus
Background and Design: Lichen planus (LP) is a common inflammatory dermatosis affecting people of all ages. Acitretin is one of the firstline systemic treatments; however, certain circumstances limit its use and encourage the search for alternative therapies. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of methotrexate as an alternative to acitretin. Materials and Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated the treatment response, clinical characteristics, and demographic features of patients who received methotrexate or acitretin for LP between January 2021-2024. Patients who showed clinical improvement and required continued treatment to maintain control were classified as "clinical responders". Patients who demonstrated a clinical response and remained clear after treatment discontinuation were classified as in "remission". Patients whose symptoms did not improve with treatment or who continued to develop new lesions were considered "non-responders". Results: The study included 66 patients. The mean age of the patients was 53.4 +/- 9.6; 47 (71.2%) were female, and 16 (28.8%) were male. Thirty-one (46.9%) patients took methotrexate, and 35 (53.1%) took acitretin. The clinical response rate in patients receiving methotrexate (n=30; 96.7%) was significantly higher than in patients taking acitretin (n=28; 80%) (p0.05). The predicted treatment response duration did not differ significantly (p>0.05) between the group taking methotrexate (15.9 weeks) and the group taking acitretin (13.8 weeks). There was no statistically significant difference in the number and duration of patients achieving remission and the side effect rate of the treatments (p>0.05). Conclusion: Methotrexate and acitretin are effective and safe options in LP treatment. Multicenter randomized controlled trials are needed to develop treatment guidelines
The Industrial Revolution is considered one of the most significant turning
points in human history. This revolution radically transformed traditional
production methods, replacing manual labor with mechanized production carried
out in industrial facilities. This major shift in production processes not only brought
economic and technological changes but also deeply affected social structures,
urbanization patterns, and spatial organization. As industrial production spread, the
spatial distribution of production facilities within cities changed; while some areas
became concentrated with industrial buildings, others experienced abandonment or
demolition over time. With its long-standing industrial tradition, Denizli has been
an important industrial center since antiquity. Especially in the textile sector and
other industries, numerous facilities were established in the city, which underwent
intense spatial and socio-economic transformations brought by industrialization.
An analysis of the industrial development from the late 19th to the 20th century
reveals that Denizli possesses a rich industrial heritage. However, many of these
industrial sites have lost their original functions, with some repurposed and many
others demolished over time. This study aims to examine the industrial heritage of
Denizli by evaluating the architectural qualities, socio-cultural contributions, and
physical impact of both existing and lost industrial structures. Through mapping
and spatial analysis, the research seeks to provide insights into Denizli's
industrialization process and contribute valuable data regarding the city's identity.
The preservation of industrial heritage is of great importance for the sustainability
of urban memory and can serve as a foundation for future conservation and adaptive
reuse projects
An Experimental Investigation on the Mechanical and Wear Responses of Lightweight Alsi10mg Components Produced by Selective Laser Melting: Effects of Building Direction and Test Force
Bolat, Cagin/0000-0002-4356-4696Additive manufacturing (AM) technology is a game-changer that allows one to produce parts with intricate geometry that have high specific strength despite having low weight. In this study, the wear behavior of parts produced with powder bed fusion at different building directions (horizontal, inclined, and vertical) was examined under different test forces (1, 5, and 10 N). Additionally, the mechanical properties of these parts were determined using tensile tests and hardness evaluations. To explore the deformation mechanism, macroscopic and microscopic observations were carried out. The results showed that the horizontal samples exhibited the highest tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness values. However, these samples also reflected the highest wear when subjected to a 10 N force. The friction coefficient values dropped depending on the rising test forces for all printing angles. Groove-like damage marks stemming from the ploughing style deformation were more remarkable on the sample surfaces as the test force levels went up. Regional severe wear tracks, debris fragments having an abrasive role, and discrete delamination states were ascertained as probable reasons for the lowest wear endurance of the horizontally built samples under the highest test load
Exploring the Relationship Between Engineering Habits of Mind and Self-Regulation Skills in Children
Erol, Ahmet/0000-0002-7538-952XThis study investigated the relationship between engineering habits of mind (EHoM) and self-regulation (SR) skills in 5- to 6-year-old children. The study employed a relational survey method and included 25 teachers and 400 children in their classrooms as participants. Data were collected using validated scales measuring engineering habits of mind and self-regulation skills and were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The study's findings revealed a significant positive relationship between engineering habits of mind and self-regulation skills. Self-regulation components such as attentional flexibility, working memory, and inhibitory control are moderately positively related to systems thinking, optimism, creativity, collaboration, communication, and attention to ethical considerations, which are components of engineering habits of mind. Our findings contribute to the studies on self-regulation skills and engineering habits of mind, which are increasingly prevalent in early childhood. No financial support was received from any institution for this research.Pamukkale Universit

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition characterized by chronic inflammation, primarily triggered by environmental factors such as cigarette smoke and air pollution. The lack of a definitive cure and the undesirable side effects of current treatments necessitate the discovery of novel therapeutic options. The essential oil of Helichrysum italicum, commonly known as immortelle, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in various studies. However, no studies have investigated its therapeutic potential against COPD. In this thesis, the cytotoxicity of H. italicum essential oil and its anti-inflammatory effects against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced COPD-like inflammation were evaluated in A549 cells. After inducing inflammation by exposing A549 cells to 10 μg/ml LPS for 6 hours, the cells were treated with 10, 20, and 50 μg/ml concentrations of H. italicum essential oil and incubated for 24 hours. Inflammatory markers including IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and COX-2 were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The gene expression of these markers at the effective concentration (20 μg/ml) was further examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Dexamethasone and diclofenac were used as positive controls in ELISA and PCR experiments. H. italicum essential oil did not inhibit cell viability up to 100 μg/ml. ELISA and PCR results showed that 20 μg/ml H. italicum significantly reduced cytokine levels and gene expression. In some parameters, its effect was comparable to dexamethasone. In conclusion, H. italicum essential oil exhibited anti-inflammatory activity in an LPS-induced COPD-like inflammation model, likely through multiple mechanisms. Further research is needed to elucidate its mechanisms of action and to evaluate its safety and efficacy in in vivo models, which may contribute significantly to COPD treatment
Effects of Gamma Ray Sources and Irradiation Doses on the Haploidization Frequency of Citron Watermelon (Citrullus Lanatus Var. Citroides)
Drought is widely regarded as the most significant abiotic stressor affecting modern agricultural production. Sweet watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus), one of the world's most cultivated vegetable species, lacks drought resistance and must be grown in dry and semi-arid regions by grafting on tolerant rootstocks. Citron watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. citroides) is well known for its high drought tolerance and has excellent potential as a watermelon rootstock. There is a high demand for novel citron watermelon cultivars with rootstock potential. Doubled haploid (DH) technology enables the breeding of genetically uniform and fully homozygous plants in a single generation. However, no research has been conducted on the haploidization of citron watermelon using the irradiated pollen technique. The current study aimed to determine the efficiency of gamma-ray sources (Cobalt: Co60 and Cesium: Cs137), irradiation doses (200, 250, and 300 Gy of Co60; 100, 150, 200, and 250 Gy of Cs137), and genotypes (11 citron watermelon lines) on the production of pure citron lines via the irradiated pollen technique (parthenogenesis). The embryos were grown on MS medium supplemented with 0.4 mg/L indole-3-butyric acid. Stomatal observations and flow cytometry were used to conduct ploidy studies on 3-4 weeks old parthenogenic plantlets. The Co60 treatments yielded eight haploid and two mixoploid plants, while the Cs137 treatments yielded 14 haploid and one mixoploid. These findings demonstrated that gamma rays from both radiation sources were effective in parthenogenic embryo induction, and Cs137 was discovered to be a reliable alternative to conventional Co60.Selcuk University [221O338]; Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK); TUBITAKThis study was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) under Grant Number 221O338. Children's Fear, Pain, and Anxiety Before and After Enema: a Descriptive, Cross-Sectional Study
Aims and objectives: The study aimed to determine the fear, pain, and anxiety levels of children aged 7-18 years before and after enema. Method: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between January 8 and May 3, 2024. STROBE guidelines were followed in the study. The sample of the study consisted of 160 children between the ages of 7-18 who underwent enema. The data were collected using the Children's Fear Scale (CFS), Wong-Baker FACES (R) Pain Rating Scale (WBS) and Children's Anxiety Meter-State (CAM-S) for Children. p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Descriptive statistics tests, independent sample t-tests, and repeated measures ANOVA were used. Result: Before the enema, children's fear (2.19 +/- 1.09) and pain scores (2.94 +/- 1.08) were high and anxiety scores (3.60 +/- 1.81) were low. There was no statistical difference between fear, pain, and anxiety levels according to some sociodemographic and clinical characteristics (p > 0.05). After the enema, children's fear (2.49 +/- 1.34), pain (2.94 +/- 1.35) and anxiety scores (3.88 +/- 2.22) increased. However, only the increase in fear level was statistically significant (p > 0.05). There was a negative correlation between the child's age and the level of fear, pain, and anxiety. Conclusions: An enema is a medical procedure that causes negative emotions for children, such as fear and pain, before and after it is administered. Nursing interventions are needed before and during the enema. Practice implications: The high levels of fear, pain, and anxiety associated with enemas suggest the need for routine assessment and nursing interventions to control these negative emotions.
