Interpretable Building Energy Performance Prediction Using Xgboost Quantile Regression

    No full text
This study focuses on predicting the Building Energy Performance Ratio (BEPR) of 3,594 residential buildings in Istanbul using machine learning algorithms. The main objective is to identify the factors affecting BEPR, examine their influence, and analyze how these factors differ across buildings with low and high energy efficiency. To achieve this, seven machine learning models were evaluated: Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Decision Tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The results show that XGBoost yields the highest accuracy among all models. To improve the interpretability of XGBoost, the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) method was employed, enabling the assessment of the impact of various features (such as wall U-value, window U-value, and building age) on BEPR. The analysis revealed that building thermal properties and age are critical factors in determining BEPR. Additionally, by applying the XGBoost Quantile Regression (XGBoost-QR) algorithm, the distribution of BEPR across different quantiles (low, medium, and high) was analyzed more effectively. This approach demonstrated that the features influencing BEPR vary between buildings with low and high energy efficiency. Specifically, in the lower quantiles, structural features such as wall and window insulation have a greater impact on BEPR, whereas in the higher quantiles, building age and roof insulation become more influential. This research contributes to a better understanding of the determinants of residential energy performance, introduces the integration of XGBoost-QR into energy performance analysis, and offers valuable insights for enhancing energy efficiency strategies

Kuday, Ahmet Dogan/0000-0001-8361-5526This study assessed the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Fear of Cancer Scale (FOCS) among 285 state university students from December 2022 to February 2023. The validity analysis included language, content, and structural assessments, with structural validity examined through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Reliability was evaluated using item-total correlation, Cronbach's Alpha, and split-half analysis. Results confirmed that the Turkish version maintained the original factor structure, with a two-dimensional model explaining 52.73% of the variance. Factor loadings ranged from 0.455 to 0.757, and confirmatory factor analysis indicated acceptable model fit. The scale showed excellent internal consistency, with an overall Cronbach's Alpha of 0.920, and sub-dimension values of 0.870 for direct fear and 0.861 for indirect fear. These findings confirm the Turkish version of FOCS as a valid and reliable instrument for measuring cancer fear in non-oncological individuals

Tekinhatun, Muhammed/0000-0002-3240-6991Objective High anxiety during coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) can compromise imaging quality, increase radiation exposure, and elevate medication use. Therefore, optimizing waiting room environments to reduce patient anxiety is important for clinical outcomes. This study examines the effects of music and visual stimuli in the waiting rooms on patients' anxiety levels, heart rate, radiation dose, and beta-blocker use prior to CCTA. Methods This study, designed as a prospective and randomized trial, was conducted between April 15 and August 15, 2024, with 216 patients randomized into two groups: a standard waiting room (SWR) and a designed waiting room (DWR) featuring music and visual objects. Anxiety and depression levels were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Additional parameters, such as heart rate, radiation dose, and beta-blocker requirement, were also recorded. Results In the DWR group, anxiety scores and heart rates were significantly lower compared to the SWR group (p 0.001). Additionally, a notable reduction in radiation dose and beta-blocker use was observed in the DWR group (p 0.05). In the general patient population, higher anxiety scores were associated with poorer imaging quality. Imaging quality was significantly better in the DWR group (p 0.001). Conclusion It has been demonstrated that waiting room designs enriched with music and visual stimuli reduce anxiety during CCTA scanning, enhancing patient comfort, improving imaging quality, and enabling imaging with lower radiation doses. The design of such waiting rooms can improve patient experience while optimizing outcomes. This research is funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK). The Impact of Climate Change on Financial Performance of The Electricity Industry: The Case of Türki̇ye

    No full text
The world is encountering increasingly frequent and intense extreme weather events, driven by climate change. There is a strong scientific consensus that warns of an existential threat if greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are not dramatically reduced and global temperatures kept under control soon. In this context, alternative energy technologies have become essential, as they can generate energy without adding to GHG emissions. T ; uuml;rkiye's electricity energy industry, as a core component of the country's economic stability and energy security, plays a major role in adapting to climate change. This study specifically focuses on listed electricity energy firms in T ; uuml;rkiye over the period from 2008 to 2022, investigating how climate change impacts their financial performance using panel data methodology. The empirical findings show that climate change has a significant and positive influence on financial outcomes, suggesting that adapting to climate pressures can benefit the industry financially. AsAa result, it is essential for the electricity power industry to incorporate climate-related strategies into their corporate agendas. However, technological innovations will mean little without large-scale public action, where local and national governments work together with international organizations and nations

Enhanced Conditional Ground Motion Selection Model Considering Spectral Compatibility and Variability of Three Components for Multi-Directional Analysis

    No full text
In this study, the solution model based on the stochastic harmony search algorithm was proposed to obtain real ground motion (GM) records for nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures. Obtaining the GM record problem was formulated as a constrained engineering optimization problem. The solution model ensures spectral compatibility between the mean horizontal spectrum of selected ground motion (GM) records and the target horizontal spectrum, as well as the mean vertical spectrum of the selected GMs with the target vertical spectrum. This model also allows the management of record-to-record variability in both horizontal and vertical components of the selected GMs. Moreover, the model effectively addresses the period-dependent record-to-record variability in all orientations of seismic excitations simultaneously using a single-scale value, preserving the relative amplitude and phasing of actual GM components. The efficiency of the model has been demonstrated through numerical examples with various uniform hazard spectra, specifically those based on Eurocode-8 and the Turkish Building Earthquake Code, as well as scenario-based target spectra. The results demonstrate that through using the proposed model it is possible to obtain GM records with the desired spectral compatibility and spectral dispersion for both horizontal and vertical GM components. Thus, the model can be used as an efficient way to obtain appropriate GM records for nonlinear dynamic analyses of both two- and three-dimensional structural models for performance-based designs and/or evaluation frameworks, considering seismic excitations in both horizontal and vertical directions

    No full text

    No full text
Background Obesity can result in increased visceral adipose tissue, insulin resistance, and impaired fasting glucose. Objective The aim of the study was to investigate the acute and chronic effects of WBVE on erythrocyte deformability, plasma viscosity, total oxidant/antioxidant status (TOS/TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and serum exerkine levels in obese women. Methods The study comprised 13 obese women (mean age 41.32 +/- 5.26 years, BMI 34.18 +/- 1.67 kg/m2). Participants performed exercises using a vibration device for 12 sessions. Erythrocyte deformability (ektacytometry), plasma viscosity (rotational viscometry), plasma TOS/TAS, OSI and serum irisin, visfatin and resistin concentrations (ELISA) were evaluated. Blood samples were collected before and after the exercise at the first and fourth weeks. Results Erythrocyte deformability values were increased after single session of WBVE at shear stress of 0.30 and 9.49 Pa and decreased after single session of WBVE at shear stress of 16.87 and 30 Pa (p 0.05) at the first week. However, after 4 weeks of WBVE, erythrocyte deformability at 0.30 and 0.53 Pa increased; TOS, OSI and plasma viscosity were all decreased (p 0.05). Serum irisin and resistin levels significantly increased after 4 weeks of WBVE (p 0.05), whereas visfatin did not show statistically significant changes (p > 0.05). Conclusions Four weeks of WBVE significantly improved the erythrocyte deformability, oxidative stress, plasma viscosity, and serum levels of irisin and resistin in obese women.Pamukkale University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit [2019HZDP015]This study has been supported by the Pamukkale University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit (2019HZDP015). Interaction of Lysozyme With Solid Supports Cryogels Containing Imidazole Functional Group

    No full text
This paper details the preparation of acrylamide-based supermacroporous cryogels and their application in removing lysozyme from aqueous solutions. N-Vinyl imidazole was copolymerized with acrylamide as a comonomer to impart pseudo-specificity to the cryogels, forming poly(AAm-VIM) cryogel. Characterization studies to assess the physical and chemical properties of the synthesized cryogels involved swelling tests, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA-DTA). To ascertain the optimal conditions for the adsorption process, pH 9.0 (TRIS buffer) was selected for lysozyme adsorption, using the parametres such as initial concentration screening, ionic strength, temperature, and column flow rate. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were analyzed to assess the adsorption parameters mathematically. The regression coefficient results indicated that lysozyme adsorption aligned more closely with the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption process is considered to be thermodynamically physical and spontaneous. SDS-PAGE analysis assessed the purity of lysozyme isolated from an aqueous solution using a poly(AAm-VIM) cryogel column. The inertness and regeneration capacity of poly (AAm-VIM) cryogel affinity columns were assessed using reusability studies conducted during the adsorption-desorption cycle. This study was financially supported by the Pamukkale University Scientific Research Project Coordination with the project number of 2023BSP010.Pamukkale University Scientific Research Project Coordination [2023BSP010
