Predicting groundwater salinity changes in the coastal aquifer of Arborea (Central Western Sardinia)
Get PDFThe area of Arborea, extending over roughly 70 km2, is located in the Northern Campidano plain (central-western Sardinia - Italy). The plain, that was formed in a tectonic trough of the Tertiary, is characterised by Quaternary deposits of fluvial, lacustrine, marine and eolian facies. The Quaternary formation is several hundred meters thick. The stratigraphic sequence, whose characteristics vary from one place to another, is generally represented by gravelly, sandy, silty and clayey deposits. The aquifer basin consists of two main units, a shallow phreatic aquifer (around ten meters thick) and a deeper semiconfined - confined unit, separated by a variable thickness aquitard. The system is recharged by rainfall, irrigation and by lateral inflow from the volcanic rock aquifers bordering the plain. Owing to inadequate water management policies, the Arborea coastal aquifer system has been contaminated by seawater intrusion as a result of overexploitation during the frequent droughts that affect Sardinia. Groundwater withdrawals have caused saltwater to encroach landward and upward toward the withdrawal points. Periodic monitoring, carried out for several years by the Department of Land Engineering at the University of Cagliari showed a varying degree of salt water intrusion along the coast. High electrical conductivity values were found mostly in the deeper aquifer, as it is locally overexploited, whereas lower values were recorded in the shallow phreatic aquifer. Nevertheless, in the shallow aquifer the extension of contaminated areas is larger than in the deep aquifer. In this work an extensive quality assessment of the data was performed to characterise the area overlying the Arborea aquifer system. In this context we set up a geographical information system and applied an environmental model to study the migration of the contaminants. A preliminary model, elaborated with the CODESA 3D code, was implemented to simulate the impact of land management (different groundwater abstraction schemes, artificial recharge etc.) on the salt dispersion process.243-25
A scalable holographic display for interactive graphics applications
Get PDFConference held in Bonn, Germany, March 13 2005. CD ROM ProceedingsWe present a scalable holographic system design targeting multi-user interactive computer graphics applications. The display device is based on back-projection technology and uses a specially arranged array of microdisplays and a holographic screen. The display is driven by DVI streams generated by multiple consumer level graphics boards and decoded in real-time by image processing units that feed the optical modules at high refresh rates. An OpenGL compliant library running on a client PC redefines the OpenGL behavior to multicast graphics commands to server PCs, where they are reinterpreted in order to implement holographic rendering. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated with a working hardware and software 7.4M pixel prototype driven at 10-15Hz by two DVI streams

We describe DJ-Lab, a plugin for the popular integrated development environment IntelliJ Idea that supports the practice of remote pair programming; XP4IDE, that automates the activity of tracking of XP managed development projects and integrates in the IDE a view of the project tasks; and WebRogue, an application for virtual presence in Web sites, that allows web users to see the other people connected to a web server and communicate and cooperate in various ways. The philosophies of these applications are analyzed to spot analogies and differences, potential evolutions, technical and human limitations, and track a path for future development.17-2
Increase in 20–50 Hz (gamma frequencies) power spectrum and synchronization after chronic vagal nerve stimulation
Get PDFObjective: Though vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an important option in pharmacoresistant epilepsy, its mechanism of action remains unclear. The observation that VNS desynchronised the EEG activity in animals suggested that this mechanism could be involved in VNS antiepileptic effects in humans. Indeed VNS decreases spiking bursts, whereas its effects on the EEG background remain uncertain. The objective of the present study is to investigate how VNS affects local and inter regional syncronization in different frequencies in pharmacoresistent partial epilepsy. Methods: Digital recordings acquired in 11 epileptic subjects 1 year and 1 week before VNS surgery were compared with that obtained 1 month and 1 year after VNS activation. Power spectrum and synchronization were then analyzed and compared with an epileptic group of 10 patients treated with AEDs only and with 9 non-epileptic patients. Results: VNS decreases the synchronization of theta frequencies (P!0.01), whereas it increases gamma power spectrum and synchronization (!0.001 and 0.01, respectively). Conclusions: The reduction of theta frequencies and the increase in power spectrum and synchronization of gamma bands can be related to VNS anticonvulsant mechanism. In addition, gamma modulation could also play a seizure-independent role in improving attentional performances. Significance: These results suggest that some antiepileptic mechanisms affected by VNS can be modulated by or be the reflection of EEG changes.2026-2036Pubblicat

semplice da implementare, in particolare per la parte riguardante il solutore, e ne saranno descritte
le varianti nel tentativo di migliorarne i risultati. Nei successivi due capitoli saranno presentati in
dettaglio i metodi proposti da Forrer e da Dadone, e ne saranno discusse le problematiche d’implementazione. Ogni capitolo è ulteriormente suddiviso in tre parti: la prima parte è dedicata al preprocessore ovvero al calcolo di tutte quelle quantità relative alla griglia ed alla geometria che sono necessarie al solutore e che sono indipendenti dalla soluzione; la seconda parte é incentrata sul solutore e sulle routine che é stato necessario aggiungere o modificare rispetto al solutore iniziale trattato nel capitolo 2; la terza parte riguarda i risultati e l’analisi critica degli stessi
