A common description for surface-tension and diffusion in two-component flows

This report tries to develop a common representation for diffusion and surface tension in two components newtonian flows. First, we make some preliminary considerations: (1) the Navier-Stokes equations of a fluid with two immiscible components is derived from the single components equations. In this case, the surface tension arrives from external consideration; (2) we shortly review the Cahn-Hilliard and Allen-Cahn equations describing a phase separation process, the surface-tension being considered as the terminal part of this process; and (3) we report a conservative representation of the surface tension and some of its variants. Second, we reinterprete the conservative form of the single components as also valid for miscible fluids. Making an hypothesis common in diffusion phenomena, we make the surface tension naturally appear from the single phase equations. An anti-diffusive term connected with the surface tension is put in evidence. Compatibility with diffusion is discussed

CRS4 Target for ESS Simulations with Armando 1.0 Calculation report

The aim of the report is to gather some information on the transient Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations of the CRS4 spallation target for ESS, run with the CRS4 in-house SPH code Armando. The problem is briefly described in terms of model, material and loading conditions. Some details on the simulation methods are given and the results are discussed, with focus on the splashing phenomenon

Rainfall downscaling in a space-time multifractal framework

Publication History: Issue published online: 9 JUL 2010 Article first published online: 9 JUL 2010 Manuscript Accepted: 17 FEB 2000 Manuscript Received: 18 AUG 1999A space-time multifractal analysis on radar rainfall sequences selected from the Global Atmospheric Research Program Atlantic Tropical Experiment database is presented. It is shown that space-time rainfall can be considered with a good approximation to be a self-similar multifractal process, so that a multifractal analysis can be carried out assuming Taylor's hypothesis to hold for rainfall over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The advection velocity needed to rescale the time dimension is estimated using different tracking techniques. On each selected rainfall sequence, a very good scaling is observed for spatial scales ranging from 4 to 256 km and for timescales from 15 min to 16 hours. A recently developed scale-covariant multifractal model is then reformulated for numerical simulation of space-time rainfall fields. The two parameters of the log-Poisson distribution used as cascade generator within the model are systematically estimated from each selected rainfall sequence, and the dependence of one of these parameters on the large-scale rain rate is highlighted. The model is then applied to disaggregate large-scale rainfall, and some comparisons between synthetically downscaled and observed rainfall are discussed.1779–1794Pubblicat

View-dependent Exploration of Massive Volumetric Models on Large Scale Light Field Displays

We report on a light-field display based virtual environment enabling multiple naked-eye users to perceive detailed multi-gigavoxel volumetric models as floating in space, responsive to their actions, and delivering different information in different areas of the workspace. Our contributions include a set of specialized interactive illustrative techniques able to provide different contextual information in different areas of the display, as well as an out-of-core CUDA based raycasting engine with a number of improvements over current GPU volume raycasters. The possibilities of the system are demonstrated by the multi-user interactive exploration of 64GVoxels datasets on a 35MPixel light field display driven by a cluster of PCs.1037-1047Pubblicat
