This project aims to model, simulate, and ultimately predict the impact of pharmacological compounds on the heart's rhythm using computer models. This will require advances in mathematical models of individual ion channels, which control how and when cells contract; tissue models, which encapsulate chemical processes and physical relationships at millions of separate points in the heart; and the numerical techniques, which must enable faster-than-real-time simulation of a living heart. By extending the frontiers of "in silico" experimentation, this project will allow to refine, replace and ultimately reduce the use of animals in pharmaceutical and other cardiac research.Completato€ 327.60

    V-CITY

3D geoinformatics has entered the digital age, hesitantly in some areas, and rampantly in others. Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth are household names. Although limited to landscapes and few buildings envelopes, their massive digital geographic libraries are today the playground of millions of people and the generator of new forms of content and applications with tremendous impact perspectives. However, these pale in comparison to those that will be made possible as soon as urban digital libraries will be fully available and exploitable. The focus of the project on urban environments is not only made possible by the latest technological advances of the consortium, but also highly justified. Urban environments represent one of the most important and valuable cultural heritage as acknowledged by the UNESCO. Therefore, the V-City project aims to research, develop and validate an innovative system integrating the latest advances in Computer Vision, 3D Modelling and Virtual Reality for the rapid and cost-effective reconstruction, visualisation and exploitation of complete, large-scale and interactive urban environments. This system will enable historians, architects or archaeologists to reconstruct from existing data, study, understand, preserve or document urban environments using an innovative interactive 3D user interface. CRS4 is the organization responsible for the visualization of massive urban models.Completato€ 300.98

THINS project: Intermediary report on the SPH code parallelization and validation for free surface

In this preliminary report we have presented the performance results of the parallelization of the Armando SPH code on the GPU platform. The results are very encouraging, since a factor of more than 60 on the performance of a CPU core is obtained using an NVIDIA Tesla Card. It appears that GPU acceleration is perfectly suited for the method and on the basis of the profiling analysis it appears that further margin of improvement is possible through a more efficient use of the shared memory of the card and a reduction in the register usage, to maximize the operational throughput of the computational kernels. In the final report, the code will be further optimized and applied to more complex problems of liquid metal flow and target design

Healthcare process management in Python: a use case

In this talk I'll describe our successful experience in introducing Python into a system for blood collection tube labeling in laboratory and hospital environments, based on IHE Technical Frameworks –the industry standard for modeling and streamlining healthcare processes– and designed to avoid human errors and ensure process traceability. During the talk I will explain why we chose Python in the first place, how we've been able to leverage the language's features and characteristics for our specific field and what problems and limitations we faced. I will show specific instances of Python usage in different parts of the project, including a low-level driver for laboratory automation machinery, an asynchronous messaging module, the implementation of IHE-compliant actors and the inevitable end-user web application, implemented with Django. Using Python greatly helped us in building our system, allowing very rapid prototyping cycles for both hardware and software, but during the talk I'll also point out what we found was missing, and what would be nice to have to ensure Python has its proper place as a viable platform for designing streamlined healthcare workflows based on established international standards.2011-06FlorenceEuroPython 201

Open source integration engines for safer hospitals. A case study

In the speech it will be presented a case study of a software integration engine based on open-source tools running in the biggest hospital of Sardinia, one of Italian regions: the implemented application is focused on ADT, Radiology and Laboratory data exchange. The general objective of the project is to enforce patient security through the use of integrated software products, the availability of homogeneous clinical data ad an easier access to medical records for administrative and medical personnel involved in the entire care process. The main objective is to drastically reduce human errors in repetitive processes through the use of modern integration engines and international standards.2011-05-12Budapest, HungaryWorld of Health IT Conference 201
