    Gene Expression of a Two-Component Regulatory System Associated with Sunscreen Biosynthesis in the Cyanobacterium Nostoc Punctiforme ATCC 29133

    Long-wavelength ultraviolet radiation (UVA) can damage cells through photo-oxidative stress, leading to harmful photosensitized proteins and pigments in cyanobacteria. To mitigate damage, some cyanobacteria secrete the UVA-absorbing pigment scytonemin into their extracellular sheath. Comparative genomic analyses suggest scytonemin biosynthesis is regulated by the two-component regulatory system (TCRS) proteins encoded by Npun_F1277 and Npun_F1278 in the cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme ATCC 29133. To understand the dynamics of these genes, their expression was measured following exposure to UVA, UVB, high visible (VIS) irradiance, and oxidative stress for 20, 40, and 60 min. Overall, both genes had statistically similar patterns of expression for all four conditions and were generally up-regulated, except for those exposed to UVB by 60 min and for the cells under oxidative stress. The greatest UVA response was an up-regulation by 20 min, while the response to UVB was the most dramatic and persisted through 40 min. High VIS irradiance resulted in a modest up-regulation, while oxidative stress caused a slight down-regulation. Both genes were also found to occur on the same transcript. These results demonstrate that these genes are positively responding to several light-associated conditions, which suggests that this TCRS may regulate more than just scytonemin biosynthesis under UVA stress

    The Weathering of Wabash Limestone

    Limestone is a rock that is relatively soft and susceptible to acidic solutions. For thousands of years people around the world have used this rock to build structures, monuments, and statues. In recent years there has seen an interest in how these rocks tend to weather based on human and environmental factors around them that can cause a change. This study focuses on how different pH levels in water can affect limestone that is found in Indiana. Samples were taken from a limestone road cut that is 0.7 miles away from downtown Wabash. These samples were then saturated in three different pH levels 3, 5, and 7 over a month long period. Thin sections are made from the samples and examined under the microscope to see the effect of the different levels of acidic water. The results show the pH levels have great effect on the limestone with time. Also, the lower the pH, the greater the impact on the limestone. Images of the weathering of the limestone with time over the study time indicate that the weathering effects of the acidic water is gradual and unlikely to happen right away as also observed in limestone monuments rock that is used to build limestone monumentshttp://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2016/1022/thumbnail.jp

    The Relationship Between Stress and Sleep Quality Among IPFW Students

    Sleep quality impacts our daily life performance and is influenced by multiple factors like the amount of stress we are under. The purpose of the current research is to empirically examine the influence of stress on the amount of time that IPFW students sleep. Specifically, I test the hypotheses that higher stress levels decrease the amount of sleep that students get and also that class standing increases students’ reported stress levels. Multivariate regression analyses of 491 undergraduates support the hypothesis that higher stress levels decrease the hours that students devote to sleep. However, seniors and students with a higher GPA report experiencing significantly less time devoted to sleep and less stress than their fellow classmates.http://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2016/1009/thumbnail.jp

    Music, Time, and Chronic Pain: A Qualitative Case Study

    A woman, here identified as Colleen, suffering from chronic, unresolvable back pain from failed surgery participated in music therapy utilizing the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM). Through this depth therapy process, she was able to make contact with unconscious material that paralleled her perception of pain and its impact on her life. Music was used to intensify feelings of “stuckness” and to encourage a recalibration of the internal sense of time as psychological issues were recognized and worked-through, resulting in a significant decrease in prescription medication usage, a return to normal everyday activities, and a renewed sense of meaning and value in daily life experiences
