Discover the new access to authentic official U.S. federal government information: govinfo, https://www.govinfo.gov/. Govinfo is the new U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) beta website that will eventually replace the Federal Digital System (FDsys) public website. As it is being built, the U.S. Government Publishing Office needs your feedback to build a better system and to make sure your questions are being answered! This program will introduce govinfo with a tour and sample searches. The second part will be an interactive session and discussion with the attendees.     Using Human in The Loop Simulation in Virtual and Mixed Reality for Medical Training

    Poor patient care skills are a persistent problem for medical professionals at multiple levels. Virtual environments that enable virtual rehearsal of targeted behaviors with simulated humans has been demonstrated to be effective in improving targeted interpersonal behaviors. In the case of patient care, the targeted behaviors include empathy, listening, showing respect, and offering support. This paper discusses the use of human in the loop simulation for medical health care training, as compared with other approaches. Essentially, the human in the loop simulation provides a standardized experience that authentically simulated a “real world” patient – provider interaction. A human in the loop solution would revolutionize the current medical education, in a way that can be directly linked with patient health, revenue, and reductions in medical malpractice

    Forward osmosis membranes for water reclamation

    This review addressed the fundamental principles, advantages and challenges of forward osmosis (FO) membrane processes. FO is receiving more and more research attractions because it can concurrently produce clean water with low energy input and generate hydraulic energy (pressure retarded osmosis). FO typically requires zero or low hydraulic driving pressure, therefore the fouling potential of the FO membranes is much lower than conventional pressure-driven membrane processes. However, concentration polarization (CP), especially the internal CP significantly reduces the effective osmotic pressure across the FO membrane, the major driving force for the filtration process. As a result, innovative FO membrane materials like electrospun nanofibers have been explored to make low tortuosity, high porosity, and thin FO membranes with a high rejection rate of solutes and low or zero diffusion of the draw solute. The orientation of the FO membrane with active layer-facing-feed solution has less fouling than active layer-facing-draw solution. In addition, to further decrease the fouling potential, a hydrophilic and more negatively charged membrane is preferred when filtration of natural organic matter (NOM) or alginate in the absence of multivalent cations

    Robert Barr’s Life at The Idler: Four Unpublished Letters

    Robert Barr occupied an enviable position in 1890s literary London. Together with Jerome K. Jerome, Barr owned and edited the popular monthly magazine the Idler. On his own, Barr wrote short stories and novels which earned him a lucrative income. As a literary and club man, he enjoyed a large acquaintance with the leading authors of the day, including Stephen Crane, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Rudyard Kipling. Yet despite his prominent place in the late-Victorian literary marketplace, little to nothing has been written about Barr’s life or works as compared to those of his contemporaries. The following four letters written to Maud Russell Lorraine Sharpe (née Hammer) between 1892 and 1896 shed light on Barr’s literary activities, including the running of the Idler, the composition of his own works, and the life of a late nineteenth-century man of letters

    Best Management Practices and Soil Water Quality: Adams County, Indiana

    Best Management Practices is a term that describes measures taken to control contaminants in a watershed when used in the context of soil and water conservation. Best Management Practices have come under fire by some, and yet are prized by others. This report investigates the effectiveness of four different Best Management Practices: no till farming, cover crop usage, controlled drainage systems, and the two-stage ditch. A small Adams County farm that utilizes these methods was chosen as the study site. Water and soil samples were collected from the farm, nearby neighbors that use conventional farming methods, and streams that run alongside both properties during the fall season. Comparisons of water quality parameters and soil hydraulic conductivity were made. Data from the soil test showed that soil using Best Management Practices can have greater hydraulic conductivity (K-value), with a K-value of 4.704 x 10-4 cm/sec compared to 1.734 x 10-4cm/sec from the field using conventional farming practices. There appears to be no trend or correlation between the locations when the water chemistry (nitrates, nitrites and phosphates) data was examined. The variability of the water chemistry results suggests that more observation and testing needs to be done throughout the planting and growing seasons. Session No. 20--Booth# 36 T28.     Extracellular polysaccharide production in a scytonemin-deficient mutant of Nostoc punctiforme under UVA and oxidative stress

    Some cyanobacteria can protect themselves from ultraviolet radiation by producing sunscreen pigments. In particular, the sheath pigment scytonemin protects cells against long-wavelength UVA radiation and is only found in cyanobacteria which are capable of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) production. The presence of a putative glycosyltransferase encoded within the scytonemin gene cluster, along with the localization of scytonemin and EPS to the extracellular sheath, prompted us to investigate the relationship between scytonemin and EPS production under UVA stress. In this study, it was hypothesized that there would be a relationship between the biosynthesis of scytonemin and EPS under both UVA and oxidative stress, since the latter is a by-product of UVA radiation. EPS production was measured following exposure of wild-type Nostoc punctiforme and the non-scytonemin-producing strain SCY59 to UVA and oxidative stress. Under UVA, SCY59 produced significantly more EPS than the unstressed controls and the wild type, while both strains produced more EPS under oxidative stress compared to the controls. The results suggest that EPS secretion occurs in response to the oxidative stress by-product of UVA rather than as a direct response to UVA radiation

    A Lower Bound on the Blow Up time for Solutions of a Chemotaxis System with Nonlinear Chemotactic Sensitivity

    In a recent study, a lower bound is established on the blow up time for solutions of a chemotaxis system, with nonlinear chemotactic sensitivity u(u+1)m−1, set in the three-dimensional unit ball. Here, u is the density of a cell or organism that produces a chemical, with density v, and moves preferentially toward regions of higher concentration of v according to the flux . With χ\u3e0, v is referred to as a “chemoattractant” and, in the case m=1, the system reduces to a version of the Keller–Segel model. Solutions that blow up in finite time have been previously established for the system on a ball in Rn provided n≥2, m\u3e2/n. For technical reasons, the lower bound proven for the blow up time applies in such cases when n=3and m≤2. We extend the analysis and resulting lower bound to such a model in general convex domains, with n≥2 and any m
