Heterologous Complementation Studies Reveal the Solute Transport Profiles of a Two-Member Nucleobase Cation Symporter 1 (NCS1) Family in Physcomitrella Patens
As part of an evolution-function analysis, two nucleobase cation symporter 1 (NCS1) from the moss Physcomitrella patens (PpNCS1A and PpNCS1B) are examined – the first such analysis of nucleobase transporters from early land plants. The solute specificity profiles for the moss NCS1 were determined through heterologous expression, growth and radiolabeled uptake experiments in NCS1-deficient Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Both PpNCS1A and 1B, share the same profiles as high affinity transporters of adenine and transport uracil, guanine, 8-azaguanine, 8-azaadenine, cytosine, 5-fluorocytosine, hypoxanthine, and xanthine. Despite sharing the same solute specificity profile, PpNCS1A and PpNCS1B move nucleobase compounds with different efficiencies. The broad nucleobase transport profile of PpNCS1A and 1B differs from the recently-characterized Viridiplantae NCS1 in breadth, revealing a flexibility in solute interactions with NCS1 across plant evolution

Helping workers understand and follow social media policies
While social media can have significant benefits for organizations, the social media presences and postings of employees can be problematic for organizations. This is especially true when employees have connections to co-workers and managers. Workers posting content deemed inappropriate or detrimental to the organization has led to a significant number of workers being fired for their social media behavior. To avoid such situations, organizations should create social media policies to guide employee content. Organizational implementation of social media policy is on the rise, but serious questions remain as to how to make it effective. One crucial question is how well employees know and understand their employer’s policy. In this article, we discuss how to communicate social media policies to workers and help their understanding. To inform our recommendations, we draw on exploratory data from a sample of young adult workers regarding their knowledge of their own company’s social media policies
Feature Extraction to Improve Nowcasting Using Social Media Event Detection on Cloud Computing and Sentiment Analysis
Nowcasting is defined as the prediction of the present, the very near future, and the very recent past using real-time data. Nowcasting with social media creates challenges because of the HACE characteristics of big data (i.e., heterogeneous, autonomous, complex, and evolving associations). Thus, this thesis proposes a feature extraction method to improve nowcasting with social media. The proposed social media event detection algorithm utilizes K-SPRE methodology and the results are processed with sentiment analysis. In addition, we develop a parallel algorithm of the methodology on a cloud environment, and we adapt an artificial neural network to build a predictive model for nowcasting. Furthermore, we complete a case study with real data: Twitter and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) influenza like illness (ILI) reports. Experiments with predicting the CDC’s ILI report shows nowcasting with social media outperforms the traditional time series AR(1) model by as much as 16% to 20%, in terms of statistical error. In addition, implementation of the social media event detection algorithm with cloud computing improved the algorithm’s running time by 65%
Effect of Osmolytes and Guanidinium Chloride on the Enzymatic Properties of Bovine α-Chymotrypsin
We have studied the effect of guanidinium chloride (Gdn.Cl) and different osmolytes such as betaine, trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and urea on the rate of chymotrypsin catalyzed reaction. The rates were measured using three synthetic chromogenic substrates, succinyl-ala-ala-pro-arg-pNA (AAPR), succinyl-ala-ala-pro-leu-pNA (AAPL), and succinyl-ala-ala-pro-phe-pNA (AAPF). Qualitatively, the results with the three substrates were identical. Guanidinium chloride and urea produced a linear decrease while TMAO produced a linear increase in the rate with increase in osmolyte concentration. Betaine had practically no effect on the rate of enzyme catalyzed reaction up to a concentration of 1.2 M. However, quantitatively the rate change per molar concentration of osmolyte (or Gdn.Cl) was significantly larger for AAPR that has a polar and cationic reactive site residue than the two substrates (AAPL and AAPF) that have non-polar reactive site residues. These results suggest that the chemical nature of the substrate (and presumably the active site of the enzyme) plays an important role in determining the effect of osmolytes in enzyme catalyzed reactions

ABSTRACT
We reviewed the current state of waste management practices in Nigeria using examples from different parts of the country. Commonly practiced waste disposal methods in Nigeria, such as burial, open-air burning, and open dumping, were found to be ineffective and detrimental to public health and the environment. It was also shown that waste management cannot be successfully operated as a social service. Rather, the generator of waste must be held responsible. Problems confronting effi- cient waste management in Nigeria include the proliferation of unplanned settle- ments, traffic congestion, insecurity, and ignorance. An experimental model being used in Lagos State for the management of wastes may be the solution. Given the rate of population growth, industrialization, and urbanization, forward-looking and effective waste management plans need to be set in motion for the protection of public health. Such plans must involve all stakeholders, including the waste generators, the private sector, the informal sector, and regulatory agencies
