The Vital Role of Librarians as Educators in Seeking to Mature an Institutional Repository and Implement an Open Access Policy
IPFW has run an institutional repository on the Digital Commons platform since 2009, but the adoption of a campus wide open access policy in the Spring of 2015 led to a greater sense of awareness of and concern about issues of repository content for many faculty members. The role of our librarians as educators in issues pertaining to open access and scholarly communications has thus become more important than ever.
In the summer of 2015, we began to hear concerns from faculty that some articles included in our repository were from open access journals of dubious quality-- some published by what have come be known in the scholarly communications field as \u22predatory publishers.\u22 These faculty members expressed hesitation about including their own future works in our repository, fearing harm to their professional reputations through \u22guilt by association.\u22 Some even seemed to equate open access publishing in general with poor quality and/or predatory publishing. In response to these concerns, we began an informational campaign designed to educate faculty as to the nature and purpose of an open access institutional repository, contemporary scholarly communications issues such as the threat of predatory publishers, and methods and criteria for determining publisher quality. Thus far, we have held two presentations for faculty about issues surrounding open access and determining publisher quality, and we have completed an extensive study comparing a snapshot of the contents of our repository against Beall\u27s List, an online list of predatory publishers. This study has provided us with hard data showing the extent of the “predatory journal problem” in our institutional repository to be quite minor and confined to only a few specific individuals and departments. It is our hope that the results of this study will help to assuage fears and begin to shape official policy as we continue to educate our faculty, promote our institutional repository, and implement our open access policy

I am Nathan Garstka, a senior History major at IPFW with a minor in political science. I’ve spent four years at IPFW and plan to graduate in 2016. The area of history I am most interested in is the late Roman Republic and Early Empire. Before college I went to Woodlan Jr./Sr. High School in Woodburn Indiana. At Woodlan I was in the marching band for 6 years, starting in 7th grade. We went to state finals for class D three times out of the four years I was actually in High School. After graduating college I hope to get a decent job that will allow me to travel sporadically

From Social Anxiety to Interpersonal Connectedness: Relationship Building Within Face-to-Face, Phone and Instant Messaging Mediums
The present research examined whether social anxiety moderates the potential relationship between conversation medium and interpersonal connectedness. Hypotheses predicted that individuals with high social anxiety would demonstrate greater interpersonal connectedness following instant messaging conversations; whereas, individuals with low social anxiety would report greater interpersonal connectedness following face-to-face and phone conversations. Undergraduate participants (N = 165) were randomly assigned to one of three conversation mediums (face-to-face, phone or instant messaging) during which they engaged in an interaction with an unfamiliar partner. Participants completed a measure of social anxiety before the interaction and measures of interpersonal connectedness prior to and following the interaction. Results revealed that level of social anxiety is a significant contingent condition for the association between type of conversation medium and attitude homophily (i.e., a measure of interpersonal connectedness). For individuals with low social anxiety, scores on the attitude homophily measure were significantly lower in the instant messaging condition, compared to the face-to-face and phone conditions
PAGI World: A Physically Realistic, General-Purpose Simulation Environment for Developmental AI Systems
There has long been a need for a simulation environment rich enough to support the development of an AI system sufficiently knowledgeable about physical causality to pass certain tests of Psychometric Artificial Intelligence (PAI) and Psychometric Artificial General Intelligence (PAGI). In this article, we present a simulation environment, PAGI World, which is: cross-platform (as it can be run on all major operating systems); open-source (and thus completely free of charge to use); able to work with AI systems written in almost any programming language; as agnostic as possible regarding which AI approach is used; and easy to set up and get started with. It is our hope that PAGI World will give rise to AI systems that develop truly rich knowledge and representation about how to interact with the world, and will allow AI researchers to test their already-developed systems without the additional overhead of developing a simulation environment of their own. After clarifying both PAI and PAGI, we summarize arguments that there is great need for a simulation environment like PAGI World. We present multiple examples of already-available PAI and PAGI tasks in PAGI World, covering a wide range of research areas of interest to the general-purpose AI community
Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation on Aquaponics-system Raised Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus X Oreochromis Aureus) Growth, Physiology, and Immunology
This study evaluates the potential health effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on tilapia physiology and immunology. Tilapia were fed diets supplemented with linseed oil (LO; high in omega-3s), sunflower oil (SO; low in omega-3s) or no extra oil (control) for 12 weeks. Blood glucose was significantly reduced in LO and SO over time and significantly lower than the control. Packed cell volume and spleen somatic index were significantly reduced in LO and SO over time but not different from the control. Plasma protein was significantly higher than the control for both LO and SO. Phagocytosis was increased only in LO and was significantly higher than SO. Higher dietary lipid levels confer some health benefits, and omega-3 supplementation enhances phagocytic activity
