Stefania Wilczyńska – the Woman behind Korczak!?

    No full text
Stefania Wilczyńska was the main educator of the orphanage run by Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit 1878 – 1942) as director from 1912 – 1942. Unlike Korczak, Wilczyńska only produced a few writings, which are only available in Polish. There is also very little secondary literature on Wilczyńska. This article addresses this research desideratum and aims to broaden the picture of Stefania Wilczyńska and make her known. Not only did Korczak die together with the children, but Stefania Wilczyńska accompanied them as well. She had previously returned from what was then Palestine to stand by Korczak and the children due to the critical political situation. Korczak had numerous other commitments during his lifetime, but Stefania Wilczyńska was the one constant in the orphanage, working and maintaining the organisational structure of the orphanage

Experimental Treatment of Solar Chimney Power Plant — A Comprehensive Review

    No full text
Solar chimney power plants (SCPPs) are encouraging sustainable energy sources due to their low cost, abundance, low maintenance, and eco-friendliness. However, despite significant efforts to optimize SCPP design, their efficiency and power generation capabilities remain limited. Researchers have explored modifications in plant geometry and hybridization to improve efficiency. Despite extensive work in this area, commercialization of SCPPs has not yet been achieved. Most of the research is numerical and may differ from real-world practical use. The number of experimental studies is also relatively small. To facilitate commercialization, further investigation with practical and feasible dimensions is required. This comprehensive review paper aims to provide an in-depth analysis of experimental approaches and advancements in the field of SCPPs. The paper begins with an introduction, highlighting the background, significance, and objectives of the review. It provides an overview of the plants, discussing their principles and operation as innovative renewable energy systems. The historical development and evolution of solar chimneys are explored, shedding light on their progression over time. Case studies of operational hybrid SCPPs are examined to showcase real-world applications and performance. The paper also addresses environmental impacts and sustainability considerations associated with SCPPs. Furthermore, recommendations for future research and development in this field are provided to guide researchers and industry professionals. This study focuses on the possibility of commercialization of both standalone and hybrid SCPPs

Telling stories with data - A systematic review

    No full text
The exponential growth of data has outpaced human ability to process information, necessitating innovative approaches for effective human-data interaction. To transform raw data into meaningful insights, storytelling, and visualization have emerged as powerful techniques for communicating complex information to decision makers. This article offers a comprehensive, systematic review of the utilization of storytelling in visualizations. It organizes the existing literature into distinct categories, encompassing frameworks, data and visualization types, application domains, narrative structures, outcome measurements, and design principles. By providing a well-structured overview of this rapidly evolving field, the article serves as a valuable guide for educators, researchers, and practitioners seeking to harness the power of storytelling in data visualization

A note on the Düsseldorfer Model for counting homeless people in a German city

    No full text
This article describes the Düsseldorfer Model which was developed for the city’s homeless census in 2021. It allows focusing on the number as well as living situations of homeless people with the objective of analyzing their needs to derive concrete recommendations for action. A complete quantitative count of homeless people in the city on a key date was performed according to principles developed together with the actors of the homeless support system in Düsseldorf. Beyond that, qualitative interviews afforded insights into the living situation of homeless people from the user’s perspective. Along with the research methodology, major results are briefly presented in the article, followed by an outlook with recommendations for action

Overcoming technology and communication barriers in intergenerational communication with a tangible interface

    No full text
Despite the higher uptake of digital media also in older age groups, there are still challenges for people of high ages and with cognitive or motoric problems, which prevent them from learning and using devices like smartphones or tablets. Tangible user interfaces provide an opportunity to connect these people to social media, thereby increasing their digital participation in society and reducing loneliness. In this paper, we discuss the challenges of intergenerational communication and research the opportunities affiliated with tangible technologies to overcome technology barriers for adults of high ages. We present a hybrid system for social media interactions between young smartphone users and their old relatives, who do not use mobile technologies. The system consists of a tangible user interface designed specifically for old adults that connects to a standard mobile messenger service. TAMI was designed in a user-centered process to fulfill the needs of older adults and tested in a longer-term field study with pairs of young and old relatives
