Tickling induces a unique type of spontaneous laughter
Laughing is ubiquitous in human life, yet what causes it and how it sounds is highly variable. Considering this diversity, we sought to test whether there are fundamentally different kinds of laughter. Here, we sampled spontaneous laughs (n = 887) from a wide range of everyday situations (e.g. comedic performances and playful pranks). Machine learning analyses showed that laughs produced during tickling are acoustically distinct from laughs triggered by other kinds of events (verbal jokes, watching something funny or witnessing someone else’s misfortune). In a listening experiment (n = 201), participants could accurately identify tickling-induced laughter, validating that such laughter is not only acoustically but also perceptually distinct. A second listening study (n = 210) combined with acoustic analyses indicates that tickling-induced laughter involves less vocal control than laughter produced in other contexts. Together, our results reveal a unique acoustic and perceptual profile of laughter induced by tickling, an evolutionarily ancient play behaviour, distinguishing it clearly from laughter caused by other triggers. This study showcases the power of machine learning in uncovering patterns within complex behavioural phenomena, providing a window into the evolutionary significance of ticking-induced laughter
Systematic review on health effects of long-term exposure to UFP
BACKGROUND AND AIM [|] Due to their small size, ultrafine particles (UFP≤100nm) can reach deeply into the lungs and could exert higher toxicity on the body organs in comparison with fine particulate matter. Only ten epidemiological studies examined long-term UFP exposure and health effects according to the most recent review from 2019 that included studies until 2017. We systematically reviewed the literature on health effects of long-term exposure to UFP. METHOD [|] Epidemiological studies were searched comprehensively in PubMed and LUDOK (the Swiss literature database on air pollution and health) from January 2017 to September 2023. Original epidemiologic studies were included if they reported on the general or sub-populations, assessed long-term exposure of UFP measures, investigated clinical or preclinical health outcomes and reported a quantifiable measure of association. Internal validity of studies was evaluated with a risk of bias instrument. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conversation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection and supervised by the German Environment Agency (FKZ 3721 61 202 0). RESULTS [|] We identified 53 original studies investigating long-term associations. The vast majority were cohort studies (79.2%) conducted in the general population (62.3%). Half (54.7%) were located in western Europe. UFP was measured and modelled in various ways; more than a third of the studies (41.5%) used land-use regression models. Thirty studies adjusted for at least one co-pollutant. Most identified outcomes were cardiometabolic (43.4%), respiratory (13.2%) and birth outcomes (13.2%). Positive associations with long-term UFP exposure were reported for cardiometabolic, respiratory and birth outcomes for 78.5%, 42.9% and 50.0% of studies, respectively. CONCLUSIONS [|] The evidence base has increased substantially since the publication of the 2019 review. Positive associations were reported, in particular for cardiometabolic outcomes

Decoupling of neural network calibration measures
A lot of effort is currently invested in safeguarding autonomous driving systems, which heavily rely on deep neural networks for computer vision. We investigate the coupling of different neural network calibration measures with a special focus on the Area Under the Sparsification Error curve (AUSE) metric. We elaborate on the well-known inconsistency in determining optimal calibration using the Expected Calibration Error (ECE) and we demonstrate similar issues for the AUSE, the Uncertainty Calibration Score (UCS), as well as the Uncertainty Calibration Error (UCE). We conclude that the current methodologies leave a degree of freedom, which prevents a unique model calibration for the homologation of safety-critical functionalities. Furthermore, we propose the AUSE as an indirect measure for the residual uncertainty, which is irreducible for a fixed network architecture and is driven by the stochasticity in the underlying data generation process (aleatoric contribution) as well as the limitation in the hypothesis space (epistemic contribution)
Far-right leadership in comparison: shifts and continuities in German-speaking movements
Leadership has long been acknowledged as a crucial feature of social movement activity. Theorisation has delved into the types of leadership and, more recently, the activities performed by leaders. However, comparative research on leadership and detection of any changes over time is scant. Our paper attends to these tasks by looking at the activities of two German-speaking far-right leaders. For many years, Christian Worch was one of the most active and influential neo-Nazi leaders in Germany, communicating much of his activity and strategy in the mid-2000s through a regular circular (Rundbriefe). Similarly, Martin Sellner, both as leader of the Identitarian movement and independent activist, today exercises an outsized role in the German-speaking far-right scene, including through his regular publications in the magazines Compact and Sezession. Our paper uses data of Worch’s and Sellner’s writings, scraped from webpages and gathered from archives, in a mixed-methods comparative design to identify the tasks performed by these leaders, and how frequently. Quantitative text analysis techniques guide the qualitative evaluation of leaders’ activities and reveal shifts – and continuities – in far-right movement leadership. The paper thereby contributes to scholarship on an important aspect of contemporary far-right movements as well as broader social movement literature on the topic of leadership
