Dietary effects of Artemia, rotifers, and their combination on larval survival and duration in the terrestrial hermit crab Coenobita cavipes (Decapoda: Anomura: Coenobitidae)
To improve our understanding of optimal feeding conditions for larval culture in terrestrial hermit crabs, we investigated larval survival and developmental duration to the megalopal stage in Coenobita cavipes. Larvae were reared under three feeding regimes: Artemia only (AR), rotifers only (RO), and a mixture of Artemia and rotifers (AR + RO), all of which are commonly used prey in the culture of decapod crustacean larvae. Although larval survival tended to be higher in the AR + RO group, feeding regime had no significant effect on survival rates. However, developmental duration to the megalopal stage varied among groups, with larvae in the AR + RO group exhibiting significantly shorter developmental times than those in the other groups. These results suggest that a mixed diet of Artemia and rotifers is an effective feeding regime for culturing C. cavipes larvae and may enhance larval survival and development in terrestrial hermit crabs under laboratory conditions.公開日: 2025-06-24journal articl

Recent Achievements of the OQEANOUS Plus Program*6 and Its Impact on Global Education at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
This report examines the impact of the OQEANOUS Plus Program (OPP), a student exchange framework with quality assurance established between seven leading marine universities in Japan, China, ROK and ASEAN, on global education initiatives at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. The OPP has demonstrated significant influence in four primary areas: (1) the provision of online and hybrid short-term introductory courses has established a phased study abroad model, leading students progressively engage in longer-term on-site exchange courses enabling seamless credit transfers and double-degree opportunities, without imposing any career constraints; (2) CTSEAA was established and authorized as a fundamental guideline on credit transfers and academic record conversions, ensuring quality assurance in international student exchanges; (3) the strategic integration of online platforms has enhanced both the quality of education and cross-cultural communication opportunities; and (4) building a strong professional network among academic and administrative personnel is the key to the successful execution of the OPP. Furthermore, post-program student surveys have revealed not only positive educational outcomes but also areas that require further attention, offering valuable insights for the future evolution of the program.中馬愛: 東京海洋大学学務部国際・教学支援課Ai CHUMAN: Academic Support and International Division, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)八田育美: 東京海洋大学学務部国際・教学支援課Ikumi HATTA: Academic Support and International Division, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)加賀絵里奈: 東京海洋大学学務部国際・教学支援課Erina KAGA: Academic Support and International Division, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)飯野知宏: 東京海洋大学学務部教務課Tomohiro IINO: Academic Affairs Division, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)申蓮花: 東京海洋大学学務部国際・教学支援課Lianhua SHEN: Academic Support and International Division, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)小山裕子: 東京海洋大学学務部国際・教学支援課Yuko OYAMA: Academic Support and International Division, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)呉海云: 東京海洋大学学術研究院海洋環境科学部門Haiyun WU: Department of Ocean Sciences, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)廣野育生: 東京海洋大学学術研究院海洋生物資源学部門Ikuo HIRONO: Department of Marine Biosciences, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)舞田正志: 東京海洋大学Masashi MAITA: Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT)departmental bulletin pape
A Method for Estimating the Fuel Consumption Characteristics of Small Boats Sailing in Medium to High-Speed Range
This study aims to develop an application software to support energy-efficient operation for small boats of less than 20 tons. In order to develop this system, statistical surveys have been conducted on the relationship between ship speed, engine speed, and fuel consumption on a 19-ton small boat for several years. As a result, it was confirmed that fuel consumption does not necessarily increase monotonically with an increase in ship speed. Authors considered that this phenomenon can be utilised for saving fuel consumption in small boats effectively. In order to realise it, it is required to identify fuel consumption trends and compare the trends with the observed data. However, fuel consumption trends are affected by hull fouling, load weight and trim balance. For this reason, fuel consumption trend needs to be determined for each voyage. For the convenience of boat operators, it is desirable that fuel consumption trends are estimated by an easy, simple, and cost-effective method as soon as possible after leaving the port. The method proposed in the previous study was highly accurate, but it was not convenient due to two problems. This study proposes a new method for estimating fuel consumption trends that solves these issues. In order to develop a new estimation method, this study focuses on the hull frictional resistance. It was assumed that the effect of wave-making resistance on energy consumption in small boats saturates at medium to high speeds, and frictional resistance becomes the dominant factor. Thus, the fuel consumption trend of the boat was analysed on the assumption that it follows a fundamental physical law proportional to the cube of the ship's speed. Based on these assumptions, this study developed a new equation model that expresses the fuel consumption trend of small boats sailing in medium to high-speed range. The fuel consumption trend determined with the new model achieved proper performance. In addition, the method of estimating the fuel consumption trend using this model solves the two problems of the method of previous study.公開日: 2025-07-20journal articl
Development of a Method for in vivo Direct Monitoring of Stored Fat Burning Using Stable Isotope-labeled Fatty Acids
We developed a novel approach for direct and rapid evaluation of the fat-burning effects of various food ingredients in vivo. Male ICR mice were fed a diet containing stable isotope-labeled palmitic acid, and fat oxidation was quantified by measuring the production of labeled carbon dioxide (13CO2) generated during β-oxidation. By evaluating the 24-h fat burning profile, we demonstrated the immediate fat-burning effect of caffeine and the gradual fat-burning effect of curcumin. This methodology allows fat-burning-specific detection rather than fat absorption inhibition, thereby providing a powerful tool for comparing fat-burning effects of different food components in vivo.公開日: 2025-04-01journal articl

Survival and feeding of the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Decapoda: Astacidea: Cambaridae) under low-temperature conditions
The red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii is an invasive alien species widespread across Japan. In Hokkaido, its northernmost range, populations have established in rivers and streams where winter water temperatures remain relatively high due to inflows from hot springs or treated sewage. To help infer the potential northern distribution limit of P. clarkii in Japan, we examined survival and feeding activity of adult specimens under controlled cold-temperature conditions. Specimens (seven females and eight males) were individually housed in plastic cups and placed in temperature-controlled chambers (14 ± 1°C), one for each sex. Chamber temperatures were decreased by approximately 1°C per day over 12 days and then maintained at the final level for 10 days. During the coldest period, temperatures unintentionally differed between chambers, with lower values recorded for males (mean: 1.2°C) than females (mean: 3.1°C). Mortality occurred in two males, either on the day temperatures dropped below 1°C or the following day. Feed consumption rates were higher in females, likely reflecting sex-specific physiological traits and their exposure to higher temperatures. Although our experimental design did not allow for a direct comparison of cold tolerance between sexes, our results indicate that temperatures near 1°C was the point at which males began to die.公開日: 2025-07-21journal articl
