Doppler-SLAM: Doppler-Aided Radar-Inertial and LiDAR-Inertial Simultaneous Localization and Mapping
Simultaneous localization and mapping is a critical capability for autonomous systems. Traditional SLAM approaches often rely on visual or LiDAR sensors and face significant challenges in adverse conditions such as low light or featureless environments. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel Doppler-aided radar-inertial and LiDAR-inertial SLAM framework that leverages the complementary strengths of 4D radar, FMCW LiDAR, and inertial measurement units. Our system integrates Doppler velocity measurements and spatial data into a tightly-coupled front-end and graph optimization back-end to provide enhanced ego velocity estimation, accurate odometry, and robust mapping. We also introduce a Doppler-based scan-matching technique to improve front-end odometry in dynamic environments. In addition, our framework incorporates an innovative online extrinsic calibration mechanism, utilizing Doppler velocity and loop closure to dynamically maintain sensor alignment. Extensive evaluations on both public and proprietary datasets show that our system significantly outperforms state-of-the-art radar-SLAM and LiDAR-SLAM frameworks in terms of accuracy and robustness. To encourage further research, the code of our Doppler-SLAM and our dataset are available at: https://github.com/Wayne-DWA/Doppler-SLAM

Reactive Programming in Java: An Analysis of Application Performance and Developer Experience
This thesis analyzes the practical implications of integrating reactive programming into Java applications, emphasizing performance characteristics and developer experience. Through the implementation and evaluation of test applications developed using Project Reactor, the study assesses the effectiveness of reactive programming under various workloads, with particular emphasis on web applications. In addition, a survey conducted among software developers provides valuable insight into the developer satisfaction and common implementation challenges. The study further evaluates the code complexity of reactive programming compared to traditional imperative programming. Alternative frameworks such as RxJava and emerging technologies such as Java Virtual Threads are also discussed.
The results indicate that developers perceive reactive code as more complex, although traditional complexity metrics often underestimate this cognitive load. Performance improvements are primarily observed in I/O-bound workloads, while CPU-intensive tasks show limited benefits. The findings offer organizations such as DATEV eG clear guidance for adopting reactive programming by carefully balancing the potential performance gains against the associated development overhead
Prefunctionalization of minerals by dry grinding in the presence of Punicines for selective separation
Punicines are phenolpyridinium compounds suitable for surface modification of lithium aluminate and other mineral particles due to their versatile chemical functionalization without losing switchability. They exist as cations in acidic solutions, neutral dipolar molecules around pH 7, and as anions or dianions in basic conditions. Light can reversibly convert punicines into radicals, enabling external control over their binding to particles and their surface properties via pH and light. For efficient separation of valuable mineral components from gangue materials, particles are ground to the micrometer range. This comminution creates new surfaces and induces chemical and structural changes and increases surface reactivity. Adding punicines during comminution ensures uniform surface binding, resulting in higher separation efficiencies compared to dry or wet mixing. Three separation mechanisms are considered: forced triboelectrification (FTC), selective wet agglomeration, and flotation. FTC involves applying high voltage to a conductive surface interacting with the material, neutralizing target material charge while others remain charged. This enables separation in an electrostatic separator. Selective wet agglomeration employs a suspension liquid, an oil-based binding liquid, and suspended particles. Hydrophobized particles form agglomerates via oil droplet adhesion. The influence of punicines on adhesion forces is studied using a FluidFM® system. Flotation separates valuable particles via selective adsorption of air bubbles. Punicines act as collectors, hydrophobizing particles and enhancing their affinity for air bubbles. A feasibility study with lithium aluminate demonstrated significantly higher yields when punicines were added during co-grinding
Modification of Powder Properties by Liquid Additives
Additives are applied to dry, fine powders to achieve a wide range of objectives, including the reduction of energy consumption, refinement of particle size distributions, enhancement of product throughput or dosing behavior. These modifications often result in improvements in flowability, a reduction in agglomeration tendency, decreased frictional resistance, and the development of anti-stick properties. While numerous individual studies have investigated various additives across diverse processes, many results remain fragmented, and a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying the actions of different additives is still lacking. Consequently, the selection of suitable additives continues to rely predominantly on empirical knowledge. In this work, the addition of liquid additives from various substance classes to powders was investigated in greater detail. In particular, the effects of additive incorporation on the behavior of powders during interactions with other materials were examined—whether during the admixing of additives in different mixing systems or upon contact with various surfaces in the fluidized state, using a specially developed experimental setup. While simple geometries and varying process parameters can be tested in the experimental rig, practical testing of the additive products was also conducted in more complex systems. Simultaneously, other properties—e.g., changes in surface energy, dusting propensity, or agglomerate strength—were also studied. The results obtained aim to broaden the understanding of the effects of specific additive classes on products from different perspectives, thereby increasing the transparency and soundness of the additive selection process for diverse future applications
Good indoor air quality and a comfortable indoor climate in classrooms can promote the performance, well-being, and health of students and teachers. The Covid-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated how important proper ventilation of indoor spaces is to reduce the risk of airborne infections. However, recent studies show that indoor air quality in many schools is still frequently inadequate. Where no mechanical ventilation systems are in place, regular window ventilation is essential. In everyday school life, however, consistent implementation is often difficult – especially during very cold or hot weather, which can significantly compromise thermal comfort. Mechanical ventilation systems offer a major advantage over window ventilation by enabling controlled fresh air supply, independent of environmental conditions (such as outdoor temperature, wind, or noise) and user behavior. However, errors in operation can occur. In addition to health and comfort aspects, energy efficiency must also be considered when implementing ventilation strategies. This is where the interdisciplinary research project by Technische Hochschule Nürnberg and Wolf GmbH, supported by Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg, comes in. It investigates the following key questions:
• How can good and healthy indoor air quality in classrooms be achieved?
• How can mechanical ventilation systems be operated as energy-efficiently as possible?
• What practical potentials and pitfalls can arise in real-world application?
The focus is on decentralized air handling units with outdoor air exchange, as these are well suited for retrofitting educational facilities. For a holistic comparison, a central ventilation system and manual window airing combined with CO2 monitors are also included in the study. The project examines the effects on both physical parameters and human well-being, addressing indoor air quality, thermal comfort, health, and energy use. To comprehensively assess ventilation strategies, the project combines simulation studies with empirical field research. Over a seven-month controlled observational study during the 2023/24 winter infection season, three ventilation concepts were investigated in practice at three primary schools:
• Manual window airing in combination with CO2 monitors
• Mechanical ventilation via decentralized air handling units
• Mechanical ventilation via a central ventilation system
Data on indoor air quality, thermal climate and window opening states in eight classrooms and weather conditions at the three school locations were recorded in an extensive long-term monitoring. Questionnaires were conducted on students’ perceived comfort and well-being, as well as cold symptoms. In addition, saliva samples were analyzed for infection markers. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to examine ventilation concepts for decentralized air handling units, and annual building performance simulations of six ventilation strategies were carried out using coupled thermal-energy models. Based on findings from both simulation and field study, practical recommendations for effective and efficient school ventilation concepts were developed, and potential pitfalls in the use of mechanical systems were identified. Properly planned and well-operated ventilation systems – ideally featuring heat recovery and demand-based control – can help ensure high indoor air quality in classrooms, reduce infection risks, maintain thermal comfort and save energy
