Evaluating GDPR right to information implementation in automated insurance decisions

    No full text
Automated decision-making algorithms are increasingly prevalent in consumer-facing industries, particularly in insurance risk assessments. The traceability of these decisions is crucial for trust, acceptance, and individual autonomy. While the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) grants individuals the right to information about such decisions, the implementation of this right remains under-researched from a usable privacy perspective. This study employs a qualitative exploratory approach with 12 participants exercising their right to be informed about automated decision-making with German household insurers. Through interviews and observations, we investigate consumer requirements and prevailing implementation practices. Our findings unveil actual process design practices that may undermine the usability and efficacy of this data subject right. By identifying these concerns and correlating them to existing deceptive patterns, our research contributes to usable security by alerting process designers, data protection authorities, and enterprises to the significance of user-centric implementations. Furthermore, this study advances research on GDPR data subject rights, emphasizing the need for secure and usable interfaces in the context of automated decision-making systems. Our work highlights the practical challenges of safeguarding usable implementation of regulatory compliance in the realm of data protection

Edge neuro-statistical learning for event-based visual motion detection and tracking in roadside safety systems

    No full text
The Vision Zero Program's purpose is to reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries while promoting equitable, safe, and healthy mobility for all. Ultimately, the challenge is to detect pedestrians during the day and especially at night to implement safety measures. The current study introduces an award-winning low-power solution employing neuromorphic visual sensing and hybrid neuro-statistical processing developed by the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg team for the TinyML Vision Zero San Jose Competition. The solution proposes a novel neuromorphic edge fusion of spiking neural networks and event-based expectation maximization for the detection and tracking of pedestrians and bicyclists. We provide a deployment-ready evaluation of the detection performance along with robustness, energy footprint, and weatherization while emphasizing the advantages of the neuro-statistical edge solution and its city-level scaling capabilities

Multiscale simulations of three-dimensional nanotube networks: Enhanced modeling using unit cells

    No full text
This study presents a simulation approach for three-dimensional nanotube networks using cubic and tetragonal unit cells to enhance modeling efficiency. A random-walk algorithm was developed to generate these networks, which were analyzed using a Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation to assess their electrical conductivity. The percolation probability as a function of the nanotube filling factor can be derived from these simulation results. Smaller tetragonal unit cells can replicate the behavior of larger networks with significantly reduced computational effort, achieving up to a 20-fold reduction in computation time while obtaining similar results. In this work, the focus is on carbon-doped titanate nanotubes for hydrogen applications, but the method is adaptable to other applications with similar nanotube network composites. The findings are expected to provide a universal framework for the investigation of nanotube-based materials

    No full text

    Applied Antifragility in Natural Systems

    No full text
As coined in the book of Nassim Taleb, antifragility is a property of a system to gain from uncertainty, randomness, and volatility, opposite to what fragility would incur. An antifragile system’s response to external perturbations is beyond robust, such that small stressors can strengthen the future response of the system by adding a strong anticipation component. Such principles are already well suited for describing behaviors in natural systems but also in approaching therapy designs and eco-system modelling and eco-system analysis. The purpose of this book is to build a foundational knowledge base by applying antifragile system design, analysis, and development in natural systems, including biomedicine, neuroscience, and ecology as main fields. We are interested in formalizing principles and an apparatus that turns the basic concept of antifragility into a tool for designing and building closed-loop systems that behave beyond robust in the face of uncertainty when characterizing and intervening in biomedical and ecological (eco)systems. The book introduces the framework of applied antifragility and possible paths to build systems that gain from uncertainty. We draw from the body of literature on natural systems (e.g. cancer therapy, antibiotics, neuroscience, and agricultural pest management) in an attempt to unify the scales of antifragility in one framework. The work of the Applied Antifragility Group in oncology, neuroscience, and ecology led by the authors provides a good overview on the current research status

BIMwood – optimized timber construction planning process

    No full text
One of the challenges facing the construction industry is the ongoing digital transformation of planning and construction processes. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a key driver of this progress. However, the applica tion of BIM in prefabricated timber construction still faces significant obstacles, particularly due to non-standardized data exchange and limited integration of timber-specific requirements. BIMwood addresses these bottlenecks in BIM-sup ported planning solutions for prefabricated timber constructions, specifically focusing on the lack of standardized data exchange between planners and timber manufacturers. To overcome this, BIMwood develops timber-specific standard ized procedures including a BIM Execution Plan (BEP) for collaboration management and a BIMwood reference process that defines specific information requirements throughout the planning and production workflow. By reducing the com plexity of the 3D CAD model, BIMwood supports a timber construction planning process that is both, efficient, reliable and scalable. Bridging the gap between digitalization and prefabricated timber construction, BIMwood enables standard ized workflows, improves collaboration, minimizes data loss, and increases overall process efficiency

Performance Analyse der Siemens S7-1500T Applikation „Druck Standard“ zur Ansteuerung von Druckmaschinen, mit anschließender Konzeption und Implementierung eines modularen Softwarekonzepts

    No full text
