Chapter 4 Enhanced Numerical Schemes in IMF for Transition States

The author introduces both fundamental concepts of transition states and pathways and advanced computational techniques, focusing on Gentlest Ascent Dynamics (GAD) and its variants. In particular, she explores enhanced numerical methods such as the convex splitting method and the Scalar Auxiliary Variable (SAV) approach within the Iterative Minimization Formulation (IMF). In addition, the book applies these methods to real-world problems, highlighting the string method and the geometric Minimum Action Method (gMAM) for computing transition paths. These diverse and multifaceted contributions can include experiences, capabilities, and identities, among others. The Handbook addresses how these CES are valued, how they reflect human-nonhuman relationships, and what roles they can play in improved human well-being, ecosystem management, and trajectories towards sustainability.
This Handbook presents a wide array of perspectives on the roles CES can play in understanding relationships to nature, and on how those relationships might translate into policy. The Handbook includes philosophical approaches to CES, typologies and classifications of types of CES, and case studies of places, people, policies and projects engaging CES. Across seven distinctive Parts, the chapters deliver a number of important practical lessons on how to understand, measure, and value CES, and use examples and applications from around the world, including how CES apply across different biomes. The Handbook also includes a selection of compelling artworks that represent CES in different cultural contexts. Drawing on long-term anthropological fieldwork in a Catholic English Benedictine monastery, this book traces the monks’ daily lives as they confront the eternal in the fabric of the everyday. Bringing into focus the vow of stability – a lifelong commitment to the monastery and its community – this ethnography explores the rhythms and architecture that sustain shared life in a world of movement and fleeting interaction. At the same time, it analyses those social processes that damage and undermine the monastic institution and those in contact with it – in particular the harm caused by sexual abuse. Engaging with the everyday dynamics of life in close community while paying close attention to the time-depth of monastic history, this is a study of how religious institutions endure and change through generations

Decarbonizing German Family Firms
Get PDFIn this Open Access Publication, we present four chapters that provide a holistic view of the critical steps in a family firm’s decarbonization journey. Achieving the EU's climate targets relies heavily on German family firms, given their pivotal role in the economy and substantial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. First, we explore the measurement and accounting mechanisms of GHG emissions, leveraging data from German family firms across various industries. Second, we examine the management of goal tensions between environmental and economic objectives, focusing on how family firms can derive value from their emissions data. Third, with the upcoming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the importance of communicating decarbonization efforts to stakeholders, we analyze the implications of this reporting mandate for family firms. Fourth, given the high investment demands of decarbonization measures, profitability remains a critical concern. Therefore, we also delve into the relationship between corporate environmental performance and corporate financial performance, highlighting the intersection of sustainability and long-term financial viability
Hybrid Urbanisms in Secondary Cities of the Global South
Get PDFThis book presents the concept of 'Hybrid Urbanisms' aiming to deconstruct the still-existing and often critiqued dualism of formalised and informalised practices in urban planning and infrastructure delivery.
Using an innovative perspective, the book addresses this issue by focusing on the complex configurations in which both forms always co-exist and compete as powerful social constructs. It unveils the juxtaposition, simultaneity, dependency and intertwining of in-/formalised practices and highlights the relevance of this perspective to better understand urban development, especially in the global South. At the same time, the book focuses on secondary cities of Ghana and Peru that are often overlooked in the existing literature but play a relevant role in global urbanisation quantitively and qualitatively. In offering a comparative perspective on two very diverse geographical contexts, ten empirical studies are framed by a conceptualisation of 'Hybrid Urbanisms' and a concluding systematisation of perspectives on this central aspect of urban development. Taken together, this volume make an innovative contribution on how to produce new and more diverse urban theories of cities of the global South.
