Shaping Inclusive Workplaces for Persons with Disabilities

    No full text
Despite the increase in research about workplace inclusion, the current literature is dominated by a negative focus on the barriers managers face as they attempt to hire people from disadvantaged groups, including people with disabilities. This open access book offers a positive and practical guide to workplace inclusion that focuses on the opportunities and strategies for managers to succeed and to develop and capitalize on the strengths and resources of individuals. Unlike some works with a broader societal focus, this contributed volume puts the spotlight firmly on what happens inside workplaces and organizations. It shifts focus from a reactive view of organizations acting on external motivations and pressures towards a proactive view, based on internal motivation, opportunities, and untapped resources. Each chapter is written on a specific theme by a leading expert, digesting the theory and applying it to real-world cases. It will be of great interest to executive education and MBA students, as well as HR practitioners and policymakers

    Digital Intelligent Aeroengine

    No full text
This open access book provides a deep dive into the digitalization and intelligent technologies transforming the field of aircraft engines, offering insights into their critical importance and the challenges they aim to address. As the aerospace industry faces increasing demands for efficiency, sustainability, and innovation, digital and intelligent technologies have become essential tools in advancing aircraft engine design, performance optimization, and lifecycle management. These technologies are reshaping the way engines are developed and maintained, enabling breakthroughs in predictive maintenance, real-time diagnostics, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. However, achieving these advancements comes with significant challenges, such as data integration, simulation accuracy, and the need for seamless coordination among multiple disciplines. This book begins by examining the current state of digital engine technologies, highlighting their role in improving design efficiency, operational safety, and cost-effectiveness. Through a detailed analysis, it identifies critical obstacles, such as the complexity of integrating heterogeneous data, achieving high-fidelity simulations, and optimizing whole-system performance in multi-disciplinary contexts. Moving beyond diagnostics, the text explores innovative approaches like digital twin-based simulation modeling, which combines physical models with real-world data to accurately predict engine behavior. It also introduces advanced methods for creating enhanced whole-engine system models, enabling multi-disciplinary collaboration to ensure design reliability and efficiency. A significant portion of this book is dedicated to the concept of the digital thread, a framework that ensures consistent data integration and automated workflows throughout the engine lifecycle. By leveraging digital threads, engineers can streamline design iterations, reduce uncertainties, and improve overall product quality

    Geospatial Technologies for Heritage Education

    No full text
This open access book shows that students, through geospatial technologies, learn the sustainable approach of heritage and also the heritage as a diversity of elements due to the complexity of physical, human, cultural, and artistic factors involved. The value of natural and cultural heritage, as part of collective heritage, can be acquired by geographic information systems (GIS) due to the multilayer approach of the spatial configuration. Proficiency in geospatial technologies to collect, process, analyze, interpret, visualize, and communicate geographic information is being increased by undergraduate and graduate students but, in particular, by those who are training to become geography, history, and art history teachers at the primary and secondary education levels. Some teaching experiences, using personalized learning, distance learning methodology, and GIS, focused on education aims to integrate students and enhance their understanding of the heritage are welcome. Opportunities offered by WebGIS in heritage education to learning research and teacher education research also fit with the scope of this book

Music and Motion – Interweaving Artistic Practice and Theory in Dance and Beyond

    No full text
How are music/sound and dance/movement interwoven in artistic processes? What kinds of models can be identified when studying the relations between them, and which aesthetic intentions correspond to them? Based on these questions, the contributors to this volume map a wide range of performances from different genres and styles, including those that transcend the stage. The aim is to discuss relationships between music, its physicality, and moving bodies in artistic practice. In doing so, they respond to a theoretical challenge: to conceptualize music as an invisible but audible motion from the perspective of perception and on the basis of visible movements that can be staged, choreographed, or improvised

    Fukushima Legacies

    No full text
This Open-Access-book focuses on the legacies of post-Fukushima activism, which are linked to significant changes in Japan’s civil society. Thirteen years have passed since the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The Japanese government tries to convey the impression that Japan has fully recovered and regained a sense of normalcy. But Japan continues to grapple with the effects of the nuclear disaster, and the government’s plans are beginning to falter. Japan’s civil society, which has strengthened and accumulated legacies—such as established networks, shared scientific knowledge, and advocacy experience— over a decade after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, has been a key force of resistance to the government’s plans. Post-Fukushima activism has extended its repertoire and thereby firmly shaped various legacies for future social movements. The book concentrates on the following three aspects that have not been thoroughly examined in previous research: The national advocacy of civil society organisations through a special type of legislation called a ‘Diet member bill’; the backgrounds of mothers and other women mobilised for CSOs with a focus on advocacy; and the longevity of these CSOs

    Exposing the Film Apparatus

    No full text
Film archives have long been dedicated to preserving movies, and they've been nimble in recent years in adapting to the changing formats and technologies through which cinema is now created and presented. This collection makes the case for a further step: the need to see media technologies themselves as objects of conservation, restoration, presentation, and research, in both film archives and film studies. Contributors with a wide range of expertise in the film and media world consider the practical and theoretical challenges posed by such conservation efforts and consider their potential to generate productive new possibilities in research and education in the field

Shaping Circular Transitions in the Built Environment

    No full text
This open access book explores how to operationalise circular economy principles in the built environment by turning barriers into enablers of systemic change. Drawing on research from the COST Action CircularB, it examines technical, regulatory, economic, and cultural obstacles while highlighting the enabling role of digital tools, innovative business models, and harmonised indicators. The book examines how circularity is integrated into European and national policies, public procurement, and urban strategies, offering a comparative analysis of best practices and policy gaps. It also addresses the need for standardised terminology and frameworks to support the integration of circularity in design, assessment, and construction. Featuring a curated glossary of over 400 terms, the book fosters shared understanding across disciplines. Combining critical analysis with actionable insights, it equips professionals and policymakers with tools to support a regenerative and resource-efficient transition in the construction and urban sectors
