    Articulate Sounds

    No full text
Articulate Sounds uncovers the complex relationship between music, literature, and religious dissent in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain. While collective song was central to Dissenting identities and culture, James Grande shows how many aspects of music were viewed with suspicion or even hostility by Nonconformist writers. Throughout the Romantic period, Dissenters debated questions of musical meaning and the connections between music and the written word, as well as the vaunted power of music over the emotions and changing ideas about listening, lyric, sound, and voice. Individual chapters focus on a range of canonical and less well-known authors, including Blake, Godwin, Iolo Morganwg, Amelia Opie, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Lamb, and Hazlitt. This book follows their careers across Britain but is grounded in the ‘world city’ of Romantic London, revealing a history of cosmopolitan cultural exchange. Tracing the Dissenting response to a rich variety of musical forms, from opera to oratorio, and from the symphony to popular ballads and hymns, Articulate Sounds demonstrates how Dissenters’ deep ambivalence towards music shaped the literary culture of Romanticism. The neglected history of music and Dissent offers a new understanding of both the evolution of Protestant Nonconformity and the contested place of music in nineteenth-century Britain

    Hurt Feelings

    No full text
This open access book offers the first full study of the phenomenon of self-wounding as it is represented in early modern literature. It looks at depictions of self-injury in ballads, plays, medical texts and histories from the 1580s to the turn of the eighteenth century. In this period, it argues, self-injury was not necessarily viewed as indicative of psychological distress, as it is in modern discourses of ‘self-harm’. Rather, self-wounding might work as a form of protest, a persuasive tactic, a means of self-regulation or an assertion of agency over one’s own body. This book blends traditional literary studies methodologies with insights from sociology, emotion studies, cognitive psychology and practice-led research to shed new light on early modern ideas about rhetoric, authenticity, emotion, and the relationship between body and identity. The book also confronts the difficulties of examining such ‘topical’ phenomena. Can the anachronism of comparisons between modern and historical self-injury be made productive, rather than reductive? What does it mean to talk about ‘self-injury’ in a period which did not have a distinct word for these practices? In so doing, it suggests new directions for literary-historical studies of the body and its practices, arguing that in such cases, we should seek not to familiarise the past but to defamiliarize the present

    Services, Experiences, and Sustainability

    No full text
This book explores the relationship between management, marketing, innovation, and sustainability within the service industries. Based on conceptual and empirical research, it examines how these elements can be integrated to enhance experiences. Contributions from leading researchers explore both the environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability as well as social sustainability and the co-creation of services with residents and societies in a variety of contexts and regions. The book provides multidisciplinary insights from marketing, management, economics, geography, strategy, and social anthropology, adopting a system approach of sustainability. This approach is reflected upon in the new geological epoch of the Anthropocene, providing insights on research initiatives associated with the responsible planning and management of services and experiences that promote sustainable behaviour. Services, Experiences, and Sustainability will inspire and encourage its readers to make a difference for the people, planet, and profit. The book will appeal to graduate students and researchers in the fields of service management, service marketing, innovation in services, tourism and event experiences, and sustainable management. The book will also prove helpful for policymakers, industry practitioners, government agencies (local, regional, national, and international), NGOs, and volunteers. Global Japanese History and Culture

    No full text
Spanning prehistory to the present, concise chapters by established and emerging scholars trace the movement of people, texts, images, beliefs, and commodities in and out of Japan, and beyond. From ancient trade routes to contemporary pop culture, Japan has always been connected. This book reframes Japan not as an isolated exception, but as an active participant in exchange—absorbing, adapting, and contributing across borders and centuries—and invites readers to see connection, circulation, and hybridity as central to Japan’s past and present. Unexpected case studies sit alongside clear syntheses to show how ‘international’ approaches—comparative, bilateral, cross-border—relate to newer ‘global’ frames that situate Japan within multidirectional networks and entanglements. Topics range across religion, literature, visual culture, media, technology, environment, and everyday life. Throughout, contributors foreground translation, adaptation, and reciprocity. The result is a lively, readable collection that joins deep expertise to lucid storytelling, without sacrificing nuance or rigour. This volume offers a fresh lens on Japan’s place in the world for scholars and researchers interested in East Asia, cultural history, and global studies. It equips readers to connect international and global perspectives, think beyond disciplinary silos, and recognise the creative power of exchange in culture. Democratic Resilience in the Baltics, Vol. 1

    No full text
This open access volume examines current threats to democracy with a focus on Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. These small democracies face unique challenges from climate change, hybrid security threats, and geopolitical tensions. The book examines how these nations have adapted their institutions and practices to withstand disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, and economic coercion, while also addressing environmental issues such as extreme weather and biodiversity loss. Part of the two-volume Democratic Resilience in the Baltics, Volume 1, "Resilient Governance and Democratic Stability," highlights the mechanisms the Baltic states have developed to counter hybrid threats and maintain democratic integrity. It covers political, economic, legal, and social resilience, and provides insights into crisis management and infrastructure protection. It also covers underexplored areas of resilience such as legal frameworks and intelligence mechanisms. The two volumes offer valuable lessons for other small democracies and larger states alike, highlighting the importance of resilience in safeguarding democratic institutions in an increasingly unstable world

    Let’s Talk AI

    No full text
This unique open access volume represents an interdisciplinary dialog with top-class researchers and practitioners on the Artificial Intelligence revolution. The contributions derive from structured interviews with community leaders who examine recent developments in AI and offer predictions about its impact on science, technology, business, and society. The interviewees, leading thinkers and practitioners from fields such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Philosophy, Psychology, and Law, gathered at the multidisciplinary event AISoLA, where they discussed developments in AI technologies, tools, and research, and these exchanges were shaped into this coherent survey. In the debates surrounding the rapid advancement of AI it’s clear that while there is much sharing of ideas, in fact true cooperation and alignment is rare, most fields still operate in silos. Given the pervasive nature of AI, it’s critical that we move forward carefully to ensure that our decisions and progress are well-considered. This book serves as a call to action, reminding us of our collective responsibility to shape the future. The authors offer points of agreement and contrast, the reader will better understand how we may still maintain control over technological progress in AI and its societal impact
