Chapter Skill, industrial transformation and work in a climate-changing world
This book offers a genuinely interdisciplinary engagement with the future of paid and unpaid work in the context of the twin challenges of decarbonisation and the growing impacts of an unstable climate. It is innovative in its grounding of such discussions in the everyday realities of workers’ experiences with an empirical focus on skill, occupational shifts and technological change at the workplace level. Part I: Skills and Training delves into how workers gain crucial skills across their lifetimes. From survivalist “preppers” to local microgrid operators, the chapters reveal practical and often unrecognised but essential expertise. Case studies include air-conditioning technical educators and construction trades leveraging tacit knowledge of sustainable practices. Part II: Industrial Transformation draws on empirical studies from coal mining, manufacturing, defence and construction to highlight workers’ experiences of climate shifts, heat and industrial transition. Theoretical contributions explore novel legal strategies such as fossil fuel “cessation” and examine the role of health and safety frameworks in addressing worker democracy and climate-change mitigation. This collection will resonate with scholars, students, policymakers and trade unionists interested in environmental labour studies, just transitions and the future of work. It offers vital lessons for navigating complex industrial transformations. Key features: Detailed case studies in critical sectors such as energy, construction, defence and manufacturing; A dynamic interdisciplinary fusion of human geography, political economy, sociology, industrial relations and law; Emphasis on worker agency, practical skill and grassroots adaptability amid intensifying climate impacts
Navigating Through Crisis
This open access book explores the socio-economic challenges and recovery efforts in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar during the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on the pandemic’s wide-ranging impacts, particularly on individuals, households, and small and medium-sized enterprises across key sectors such as agriculture, garment manufacturing, and tourism. The analysis incorporates cross-cutting themes, including gender disparities and social protection, highlighting the uneven effects on different demographics. The book also discusses the policy responses adopted by these countries to mitigate socio-economic challenges. It examines the mechanisms employed during policy implementation, identifying key lessons for managing crises in the region. The book aims for a diverse audience, including students, researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners. Offering evidence-based insights, this volume is an important resource for understanding crisis management and policy development in the context of developing countries
Mathematical Modelling of the Human Brain II
This open access book revolves around predictive mathematical modelling and simulation of brain multiphysics with an emphasis on cerebrospinal fluid flow and solute transport in and around the human brain. The book consists of 10 self-contained and relatively short chapters, each offering a rapid introduction to a key problem or topic, supported by open source software. Readers will gain insights into state-of-the-art mathematical tools and techniques for modelling and simulation of brain multiphysics ranging from classical finite element approaches, network-based modelling techniques and deep neural networks. The target audiences are researchers in applied mathematics, scientific computing, biophysics, bioengineering or computational neuroscience interested in a compact introduction to image-based computational modeling of brain multiphysics and cutting-edge available tools
Who Owns War?
This book provides a critical assessment of the broadly held view that states ‘own’ war. The central theme of the book is that the persistence of non-state actors in historical as well as contemporary conflicts challenges this narrative. It takes a multidisciplinary approach to address a host of questions concerning the role of non-state actors, both armed and unarmed, in conflict and their relationship with states. Recurring themes are issues of loyalty, accountability and effectiveness. Part I is subdivided into two separate themes. The first is the use of civilians in war from a legal and military operational perspective, the second the question of loyalty and accountability of the private sector. Part II considers the cases of several non-state armed actors from the past and the present, showcasing the variety of actors and roles they play. Together, the contributions to this book provide an important new perspective on the role of non-state (armed) actors in war.; The first distinguishing feature of the work is that it is multidisciplinary. It brings together perspectives from different fields that look at the same phenomenon. Various chapters combine different perspectives and provide an interdisciplinary approach to a particular topic. Another distinguishing feature is that the work is highly topical, taking into account the latest developments. For example, various chapters incorporate the latest developments in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in their analysis. Another chapter takes stock of the latest developments concerning (weaponry used by) the Houthi in Yemen. A third distinguishing feature of the work is the proximity to practice of the authors. They are either serving officers, a number of whom have field experience, or civilian academics with policy experience or extensive service teaching experience
