The music salon in Falun: a study of the bourgeois salon as pedagogical milieu

    Get PDF
In the article I explore the bourgeois salon as a landscape for learning. The project is directed towards the didactical functions of the salon and its importance for the spreading of pedagogical systems in Sweden. The purpose is to highlight the Munktellian salon in Falun and its relation to international, mainly German, role models. The project emanates from German educational theory with relevance for the romantical, new humanistic ideal of education. Of a certain interest are Johan Henrik Munktell´s (1804–1861) education travels (bildningsresor). Inspired by Mendelssohn´s music salon in Berlin and the early salons in Uppsala he created a salon where his daughters were educated in art and music. A letter collection from J. H. Munktell to his father J. J. Munktell in 1828–30 can be considered a unique historical material, which places the Falun salon in a continental context of culture, education and industrial pretensions. The method of the study is based on Paul Ricoeur´s hermeneutics. The narrative moments are qualified through interpretation to give the historical material a new description. Through the project, conditions that contribute to changes in the landscape of educational history are accounted for. The results extend the knowledge of the early Jewish salon culture in Germany and how it has influenced general pedagogy and music education.2014-04-3

Musical leadership : the choral conductor as sensemaker and liberator

    No full text
Avhandling (Ph.D.) - Norges musikkhøgskole, 2013The conductor role is a complex and multi-faceted role. Yet, it has been researched only to a limited degree. The research tradition has a pedagogic bias, leaving less room for the conductor as artist, co-musician, and team builder. Conductors´ own writing is more practice based than research based and naturally has an intentional view. Little attention has been given to the singer viewpoint and the impact view: how do choral singers perceive the conductor role and how is musical leadership experienced by those who actually produce the sounding music? This study investigates these questions, applying a hermeneutic-phenomenological method, aiming at capturing choral leadership as lived experience. The study is based on in-depth interviews with 22 singers in Norway with college and university degrees in music. The dissertation includes extensive and detailed interpreation of the interviews. Based on the themes that emerge from the interviews, three conceptualisations of choral leadership are proposed: (1) the legitimacy model, (2) the enactment model, and (3) the notion of elusive perfection. The legitimacy model deals with why singers want a conductor. The enactment model deals with the encounter between conductor and singers, and how the musical leadership is experienced. The notion of elusive perfection captures the series of balancing acts conductors are continuously faced with and the observation that no stable solutions exist. The holistic approach of the study, taken from the singer viewpoint, sheds new light on several ideals and conceptions about choral conducting that are often taken for granted

Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. Vokal: 52.0 – 59.3 dB. Lyren: 37.6 dB. CPAP: 57.5 dB. Abstract Background: Premature infants are regularly exposed to situations and procedures that are associated with pain, stress and dissatisfaction. Examples are lights and sounds, heel lance for blood samples, insertion of venous- and arterial cannulae, suction of the nose and throat, respiratory therapy, CPAP therapy, various alarms, etc. Method: This pilot study investigates whether songs and lyre sounds can deflect and reduce pain/discomfort in various procedures like eye examinations, blood tests and suction procedures on preterm infants in a neonatal intensive care unit. Objective measures for pain/distress level such as pulse rate, SpO2, respiration and SCA (Skin conductance algesimeter) are recorded. This is done approx 30 - 60 seconds before the procedure starts, about 30-60 seconds during the procedure, and approx 30-60 seconds after the procedure. The study includes 44 measurements, 20 children with gestational age 24 – 36 weeks and birth weight 495 – 2050 gram. Under the measurements were the premature children from 29 to 42 weeks old, weighing from 875 to 3642 gram.15 boys and 5 girls are in the study. The study involves premature, respirator child in open and closed incubator and children lying on CPAP in open and closed incubator. Noise measurements were recorded. General noise on the ward: 40.0 to 45.0 dB. Background noise at a high frequency ventilator: 40.0 dB. Vocal: 52.0 to 59.3 dB. Lyre sound: 37.6 dB. CPAP: 57.5 dB. General chat on the ward: 44.6 dB. Inside the incubator: 65.0 dB. SpO2 Measurement: 43.5 dB. Off duty room without appliances, nurses, air conditioning etc.: 37.2 dB. Results: Eye examination results showed statistically significant positive effects of music (song and lyre) for heart rate (reduced, p <0.05 level) on infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. The effect was confirmed by observation of individual patients during music therapy. The effect is mostly due to song as the lyre sound level was very weak compared to the background noise. For the other parameters, there were no statistically significant differences with and without music. Individual dispersion (variance) in the data was large. This is probably due to different health status among patients. Conclusion: The study showed that music (song and lyre) had statistically significant positive effects on heart rate (p <0.05 level) in infants in the neonatal intensive care unit during the eye examinations. A number of international empirical studies have found similar effects

Discourses on music in Swedish primary and preschool teacher education

This study investigates prevailing discourses on music in the field of creative arts in Swedish teacher education for primary school and preschool, following the programme based on the 1999 teacher education reform. The data were collected from 19 focus group interviews with teacher educators and student teachers from ten higher education institutions that offer such teacher education programmes. Theories related to language as action and the consequences of linguistic actions were taken as central to the study. To identify and discuss the discursive formations, analytical tools inspired by discourse psychology and discourse theory were used in the analysis. The analysis demonstrated that an academic discourse focusing on theory, reflection, and textual production has pushed aside skills-based practice. A second discourse, characterized by subjectivity and relativism vis-á-vis the concept of quality, was also found in the material. Finally, a therapeutic discourse was articulated and legitimized based on the idea that student teachers should be emotionally balanced. The constructions may be regarded as strategies that legitimize the creative arts, which no longer have a clear identity in this teacher education context. The discourse on technical skills in music, which previously occupied a hegemonic position in the discursive field, has fallen apart, allowing other discourses to take root.2014-04-3

From Jamerson to Spenner. A survey of the melodic eletric bass through performance practice

    Get PDF
Avhandling (Ph.D.) - Norges musikkhøgskole, 2012Abstract - The double bass – the preferred bass instrument in popular music during the 1960s – was challenged and subsequently superseded by the advent of the new electric bass instrument. From the mid-1960s and throughout the 1970s, a melismatic and inconsistent approach towards the bass role ensued, which contributed to a major change in how the electric bass was performed and perceived in the sonic landscape of mainstream popular music. Investigating the performance practice of the new, melodic role of the electric bass as it appeared (and eventually disappeared) in the 1960s and 1970s, this thesis turns to the number one songs of the American Billboard Hot 100 charts between 1951 and 1982 as a prime source. Through interviews with players from the era under survey, numerous transcriptions – elaborations of twenty bass related features – are produced. These are juxtaposed with a critical study of four key players, who provide the case-studies for examining the performance practice of the melodic electric bass.publishedVersio

Deltakerne som musikalske agenter i prosjektet ”Are you with us?”

    Get PDF
Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. Prosjektet tar utgangspunkt i ungdommens musikkultur.

In-between reality and dream. Exploring the act of singing lullabies in parenting from a health-philosophical perspective

    No full text
Caregivers around the world sing to their infants and children. This text argues that parents’ singing lullabies for their children promote well-being. On the basis of 20 Norwegian parents’ experiences, interpretations, descriptions and assumptions, from the east part of Norway, this interdisciplinary text explores health qualites of singing lullabies in parenting, with particular regard to parents’ own innate or learned musical resources and musicality in the wide sense of communicating the vitality, meaning, sympathy, sensitivity, appreciations, motives, paradoxes, and interests of life. The text argues that lullabies can be an important, nice, natural, and necessary oasis in parents’ and the children’s life. Singing lullabies may promote emotional and mindful presence, sense of coherence, safety, and stability. Through musical, multi-sensory enactments, the child’s body and soul are “embraced” and “nourished” - by “caring love” and “sounds on the calm”. The act promotes comfort, nourishes the sense of self, and facilitates the fall-asleep-process under certain important conditions like “expressive timing” and “attunement”. The act represents an in-between state of play and practical concern, reality, and dream, where the child gradually turns inwards by means of the imaginative and creative “vehicle” of lullabies. The methodological approach consisted of collecting data by qualitative in-depth interviews, video-recordings made by parents themselves, and stimulated recall. Allowing the lullaby-event to come to the surface in its authentic, contemporary, and genuine setting, concepts and categories from health-, social, and philosophical psychology served as partners of dialogue

    Get PDF
Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave.

    Praksisbegrepet i musikklærerutdanning

    Get PDF
