Masteroppgave. MusikkterapiThe study is based on connections between music and language, and explores how participation in musical activities can help stimulate pre-school aged children’s active language. The thesis says: “In what way can participation in musical activities in a language and music group stimulate to an actively used language for pre-school aged children?”
The study has been implemented as a qualitative, instrumental case study in a language and music group consisting of four pre-school children aged 4–5 years. The group was led by a music therapist and a speech therapist, where my role was that of music therapist and participatory researcher. The implementation of the study derived its inspiration from participatory action research, where the speech therapist and I planned, implemented and evaluated the groups in an interdisciplinary cooperation.
The data has been collected through participatory observation and video observation. The results after the analytical process can be summarized through the category violation of expectations, as possible explanations of how the children use the language more actively through participation in the musical activities. The results are exemplified as three narratives from the data material, and are discussed up against theories from musical therapy, pedagogy and development psychology. All three examples show that the structures of the music activities, together with an improvisational approach, form a foundation where the children spontaneously increase their language activit
Relationships between entrance tests and exams in music performance and aural-skills at the Norwegian Academy of Music
Focusing on aural skills and main instrument performance, the results from entrance tests and exams from 307 bachelor students at the Norwegian Academy of Music were examined to explore a possible connection between test results in the two areas. The results show a moderate correlation between corresponding tests (p<.01) but no significant connection between aural/ theory tests and music performance. Several reservations about the content and role of the aural entrance test are discussed, including concerns about how musical aptitude can be conceptualized, how it might be measured, in addition to its relationship to performance. Keywords: aural skills and performance, aural entrance test, musical abilities assessment, musical aptitude conceptio
Lully and Weir's operas, Armide and Armida
Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. Utøving med fordypningsemneResearch question:
The question that should be asked, is then: How has the different contexts in which the composers, Lully and Weir, lived/lives, influenced the way in which they interpreted Tasso’s poem and thus composed their operas, Armide and Armida, and what consequences will there be for the performer?
Sub-questions:
What is the story of Armida in Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata and what significance did it have in the time it was written? What was the contextual background in which Lully composed his Armide? How was the performance practice of opera in Lully’s time? How does Lully treat Tasso’s story and what significance did it have in his time? What was the contextual background in which Weir composed her Armida? How is the performance practice of opera in Weir’s time? How does Weir treat Tasso’s story and what significance does it have in her time? What connections are there between Lully and Weir’s treatment of Tasso’s story and their coinciding contexts? What consequences are there for the performer?
General objective:
The general objective of this thesis is to explain and analyse how the different contexts in which the composers, Lully and Weir, composed their operas, Armide and Armida, influenced the way in which they interpreted Tasso’s poem, and to discover what consequences there are for the performer
Glimpses of joy. Music therapy with elderly people suffering from dementia and depression
Avhandling (Ph.D.) - Norges musikkhøgskole, 2013The dissertation describes an empirical study in which six elderly people suffering from dementia have received short term music therapy. The sessions have been videotaped and standardized instruments have been applied in a Mixed Methods Research Design. Evaluation of change and distinctive features in the processes are focused.
The first chapter, the introduction, presents the main subject and the key notions Music therapy, Dementia, and State of mind. This is followed by a theory section where connections between memory, music, and dementia are elucidated from neuropsychological and cognitive psychological perspectives. After this, a literature survey is presented which contains a review and descriptions of research studies published from year 2000 within the areas music, dementia, and depression in addition to anxiety, behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia (BPSD) and quality of life/wellbeing. The introduction closes off with the main research question: Can music therapy influence the state of mind among people with dementia who have symptoms of depression or depression and anxiety?
The subject in chapter two is methodology. The concepts of Mixed methods, Case study, and Single case design are elaborated. In addition to this, the framework for the collection of data is described, as well as qualitative and quantitative procedures.
Chapter three and four contain analyses and results. The most important findings in the quantitative investigation are statistically significant positive change in Anxiety and Quality of life after an average of 12 sessions for the group as a whole (p<0,05). The subcategory Anxiety is measured by the Neuropsychiatric lnventory NPI and Quality of life by the Alzheimer Related Quality of Life ADRQL. Within sessions there are statistically significant positive changes in the Dementia Mood Picture Test (DMPT) and between sessions in the subcategory Wandering in the "Døgnvariasjonsskjema" (form for 24 hours varieties in behavior). When the cases are considered individually, the results show that five out of six persons with dementia had a positive change in state of mind, demonstrated by reduced behavioral and psychological symptoms as well as an increase in quality of life after the music therapy period. A follow-up after three months shows an increase in symptoms and reduction in quality of life, but the levels are still better than before intervention for four of the five persons involved.
The most important results in the qualitative investigation are that the six cases either show an increase or an unchanged degree of attention, response to the music, expressions of emotions, and relational accessibility, both in the beginning and the end of the music therapy period, as well as in the beginning and end/midst of the sessions.
The changes observed in the video analyses are yet not significant. Even though the changes are small, the analysis shows generally high levels of participation. Results from the research methodology are thereby that changes are registered mainly by standardized instruments and not by video analysis. However video analyses are considered important to get information of what goes on in the music therapy sessions. Besides this, both types of methods are considered necessary for mutual corrective purposes and for giving a comprehensive picture of what is happening.
The final part of the thesis contains discussions of the results related to previous research in the field and also critique of the method. ln addition to this, transference to dementia care in general and the music therapy profession is considered. The study sticks out from other music and dementia studies by the application of both quantitative and qualitative methods, and that positive changes are registered in both aspects of mood symptoms and quality of life. Moreover, it is the first Ph.D. study in Norway that addresses individual music therapy with persons suffering from dementia.
The study utilizes a small sample and thus it cannot be generalized to the population of persons with dementia. However, it can be used for replication. In addition to this there is an argumentation for "analytical or theoretical" generalization. This means that results from a small sample are related to material from similar studies and to a theory which supports the results. In this study, one case event is repeated in five other parallel case events. The results are positive for five of the six cases. In addition, the results for the group as a whole show a reduction of symptoms and improved quality of life.
Combined with other research studies yielding positive results in the same areas of investigation, in addition to theory on the field, these give foundations for analytical generalizing. There is also the argument that music therapy yields special qualities concerning communication with people who have limitations in their language and memory abilities and therefore should have more influence in dementia care. For the music therapy profession, standardized instruments are recommended when evaluation of music therapy outcome is considered.
Based on the results yielded here, other research studies within the same area, theories in the fields of neuropsychology, and music psychology about connections between memory and music perception, the conclusion is that music therapy can have a strong impact on the state of mind for people suffering from dementia that have symptoms of depression and anxiety
Then certain songs came : music listening in the grieving process after losing a child
In this article we investigate the affordances of music listening during a parent’s grieving process following the loss of a child, and what these affordances may tell us about music and grieving processes more generally. The discussion is based on a narrative by Janne that is taken from a longer interview related to music experience as a mediating tool for emotion knowledge. Janne describes her reliance upon music at different stages in the grieving process and emphasises its relational aspects—that is, how she experienced the music as a process of ‘reaching out’ (or in) in the context of her chaotic ‘bubble of grief’. The interview was guided by principles derived from the hermeneutic-phenomenological tradition, and the present analysis draws upon this tradition as well but also integrates narrative theory and contemporary music psychology research. We then present the results in relation to theories of emotion knowledge, grief and receptive music therapy
Musikkformidling i Libanon.
Masteroppgave. MusikkterapiThe voice is an important instrument in music therapy, but a lot of the literature is found outside the border of the field and should therefore be charted out. This thesis examines Norsk psykomotorisk fysioterapi, toning and Roy Hart Theatre in order to answering the following problem:
How is the connection between bodily tensions and use of voice/breathing being understood in three selected approaches, and upon what do they build their understanding?
This is examined through a qualitative literature study and these methodological tools are used: hermeneutic spiral, a literature-guide, a self-inquiry and the model called the three of science (Petzold H. G., 2004). The approaches are presented in regard of origin, goals, content, education, research and theory as well as problematic aspects. An analysis and discussion of topics on the practical-, theoretical-, and meta-theoretical level shows some complex connections. This is important for interdisciplinary collaboration and it provides some practical consequences for therapeutic work with the voice.
The main points in the conclusion are:
* Muscular tensions, in form of blockades, may be changed through the use of voice and breathing. It is a close connection between these two.
* The understanding of this connection, in the three approaches, is mostly build upon experience as well as a broad spectrum of theories.
* The approaches look upon the human as an entirety, but there is uncertainty of whether they are humanistic, naturalistic, etc.
* NPMF and toning can be linked to an empowerment philosophy and a resource orientation, while it is unclear whether RHT may be linked to this or not.
* These are complex systems, so we must tolerate ambiguity and non-reductionistic answers
Samarbeidsorganisasjonene i Libanonprosjektet
