Mental trening innenfor øving på jazzsaksofon

Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. MusikkpedagogikkSammendrag.

- - Emneord: Musikkterapi, førstegangsmødre, spedbarn, helsefremmende arbeid, tilknytning, samspill, kommunikativ musikalitet, helsemusisering, mentalisering, foreldrementalisering, moderskapskonstellasjonen, identitetSummary - - This master thesis explores the experience of nine first time mothers in their participation in a music therapy group at their local community health care centre together with their young infants. The mothers and infants were a non-clinical group. The main goal of the study was to gain knowledge about what music therapy can offer this population, and to explore how a music therapy group could be carried out at community health care centres. The study is designed as an explorative, qualitative interview based study. The mothers first participated in six weekly group sessions for the duration of 2 months. The content of the sessions was simple music activities, mainly focusing on song, touch and movement. In addition to this it was continuously talked and reflected upon the activities within the group, the mothers' early memories of music, and how they currently were using music in their daily routines with their child. Afterwards, they each completed one individual interview. Results show that the mothers experienced outcomes in four different areas: personal, dyadic, social and transferable outcomes. In the discussion topics from the results are explored such as the mothers' experience of discovering their child as a unique, social and resourceful being, and the mothers discovering themselves as mothers and gaining confidence in motherhood. Music therapy groups offered at the community health care centre has a shown potential to support mother-infant interaction and attachment, and to support and empower first time mothers in their new role. The health outcomes of this should be explored in further research. - - Keywords: Music therapy, first-time mothers, infant, health promotion, attachment, mother-infantinteraction, communicative musicality, health musicking, mentalization, parental reflective functioning, motherhood constellation, identit

Dissertation review: Johan Nyberg’s Music education as an adventure of knowledge.

Research note: Dissertation reviewHow does one generation of Swedish music teachers and students—inserted into this moment in time, and woven into the fabric of a particular context and its place—conceptualize the work they do? All research is animated by a hunch. And Nyberg’s hunch was that if we listened to teachers and students as they grapple with the problems of their day, we might be better poised to modify classroom spaces so that education may become a so-called ‘adventure of knowledge’. In three peer-reviewed studies, Nyberg asked a series of inter-related research questions, which I have paraphrase like this: (1) How do music students conceptualize music knowledge and learning? (2) Likewise, how do music teachers conceptualize music knowledge and learning? (3) How is the work of teaching and learning understood and experienced in an educational environment that is hostile to adventure and openness

Bodily representations of musical meaning making in singing lessons

ABSTRACT -- Bodily representations of musical meaning making in singing lessons. This article concerns singing education in folk music, Western classical tradition, and improvised music in a music teacher education programme in Sweden. The study investigates how conditions for bodily learning and interpretation are semiotically designed and carried out by vocal teachers in one-to-one singing lessons. Video documentations of singing lessons with three vocal teachers and three students are transcribed and analysed with focus on how musical knowledge and practices of knowledge are bodily represented, designed and expressed, and how students respond to the teachers’ affordances. The theoretical point of view is based on a multimodal and social semiotic perspective. The result shows that all students have the possibility to learn the studied music through bodily understanding, expressions, associations, contextualisation, and interaction, yet the function and the meaning of these bodily learning aspects are varied in the studied lessons. The views of what is counted as musical knowledge, which norms and values are focused on, and which attitudes and methods the teachers work with thus vary depending on context and genre. New knowledge about bodily learning processes and bodily musical meaning making is contributed by the study. Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. MusikkterapiSummary - The aim of the present study is to explore themes related to music therapy, children and young people and mental health. A qualitative, hermeneutic-phenomenological approach and semi-structured interviews with four music therapists, seeks to answer the research question What kind of position does self-esteem and sense of self hold in music therapy practice promoting childrens and young people´s mental health? The procedure chosen for the analysis is Interpretativ Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The results of the analysis shows that self-esteem and a sense of self can relate to music therapy, children and young people's mental helath in three main categories; Identity, Music therapy practice and Selfesteem/ sense of self, and seven ground categories: a place to feel free, mastery, social aspects, relationship, goals and working methods, change and coping. From a salutogenetic point of view, these categories have been discussed up against theories mostly from the field of music therapy and developmental psychology. - - Keywords: Self-esteem, sense of self, self-agency, mental health, children, adolescents, young people, music therapy, music. - - Emneord: Selvfølelse, selvaktelse, selvfornemmelse, selv-agens, psykisk helse, barn, ungdom, unge, musikkterapi, musikk

“It’s you—not the music”: musical skills in group interventions in multicultural kindergartens

ABSTRACT -- This article presents findings from a self-study inquiry conducted in multicultural kindergartens during music group interventions (MGI). The inquiry is based on theories within musicking and communicative musicality. It addresses the claim: “It’s you—not the music” in search for whether this statement might be true or not. My purpose is also to question what is ‘me’ and what is ‘the music’ in this statement. MGIs were conducted for 19 weeks in three different multicultural kindergartens with children aged 3–5 (n=30). All were videotaped. Findings are based on the video material, qualitative interviews, informal talks, and critical friends, and this research material points towards the necessity of musical confidence to be able to make use of musical skills. -- Keywords: teacher competence, didactical conditions, musical skills, musicking, communicative musicality, multicultural kindergarten, self-stud

The musical present: A polyphonic philosophical investigation

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT -- How can music education be enriched by the concept of time? This article is based on the assumption that the present moment, the musical ‘now’, is of the utmost importance not only to the musical performer or listener but to the musical learner and teacher as well. It aims at a philosophical discussion and conceptual clarification of a number of issues of time that are considered to be crucial to music education through a presentation and discussion of thoughts and concepts put forward by four selected philosophers: Augustine, Edmund Husserl, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Paul Ricoeur. It is suggested that reflecting upon time may significantly challenge and develop students’ ways of thinking about music connected to different actions within several fields of music education. For instance, Augustine’s analysis of time offers important perspectives on practising, remembering, and performing music. Husserl’s philosophy of time constitutes the stream of consciousness, which leads to an understanding of the comprehension of tonality. Discussions of Bakhtin’s concepts of utterance and chronotope demonstrate that the need for experiencing and understanding music arguably poses a challenge for current music education in schools with regard to its predominant ways of dealing with time. With reference to Ricoeur’s analysis of time and narrative, it is suggested that musicians’ need for multidirectedness in the musical present calls for a rich learning ecology framework. In conclusion, it is argued that reflection on musical practice in general would benefit from taking the shape of polyphonic philosophical investigations. Musikkterapi for å skape samanheng i fosterbarn sine nettverk

"This is not a drum". Towards a Post-Instrumental Practice

    Get PDF
Critical Reflection - The Norwegian Artistic Research Programme - The Norwegian Academy of Music - 2010–2014Abstract. - This is Not a Drum: Towards a Post-Instrumental Practice thematizes the role of the performer in contemporary music. - One of the oldest crafts in musical arts, percussion playing, especially within the Western contemporary music tradition, has developed rapidly and been subject to significant change over the last 60 years. The growing presence of percussion as an autonomous source in classical music was primarily linked to avant-garde movements flourishing in the first decades of the twentieth century. Along with extra-musical objects such as household implements, and electronic devices such as radios, tape recorders, and turntables, percussion emerged as a fresh medium for expansion and alteration of Western music’s building blocks, perfectly suiting an escalating quest, characteristic of the period, to break new musical ground and move beyond the romantic tradition and mainstream conformism. This movement also fostered a new breed of performers. Emerging first as multi-tasking percussionists within the classical orchestra, these performers developed in the works of European and American experimentalists of the 1950s and 1960s into co-creators of a new genre. In the process, they developed skills that were unparalleled in classical music: using all imaginable sound-producing objects as instruments. My project takes as its starting point the notion that percussionists have so many instruments that, in effect, they have none to with which the can genuinely identify. The ambition of the project has thus been to liberate or decouple the intent of percussion from the materials of percussion, and to influence new developments in our field by investigating an expanded area of practice. The idea has been to try to understand how the genre and the role of its performers have evolved and to offer what I consider to be relevant and necessary responses to its current state. I have reflected on recent tendencies emerging in contemporary music that pursue the experimental spirit of percussion music from the midtwentieth century onwards, but that are not directly connected to percussive techniques or instruments. My investigations have been centered on nine case studies in two parallel lines of research, the first developing five new works employing unconventional techniques and instruments, the second investigating interpretational potential in works that already existed when I began the project. Most of these compositions do not fit the common definitions of percussion works, since they do not involve instruments or techniques associated with general percussion. The fact that I and other percussionists perform them and works of similar nature poses fundamental questions about what performing percussion might imply today. My claim is that we see emerging the contours of a new practice, which I tentatively would like to label post-instrumental. I have drawn on my own artistic practice as tool and method in the generation of this text. Through reflecting on the various processes posed by my case studies, I have examined my research questions, hoping to contribute to the ongoing discourse among performers, composers, and musicologists in the field of New Music. The written reflection is to be understood as a complementary side product to the artistic portfolio that accompanies the project
