This study examined the relationships among children’s role-taking ability in rule and moral situations and classroom behavior (non-cooperative class behavior, rule compliance behavior, and prosocial behavior), as well as children’s emotions toward school (liking/avoidance). Participants were Grade 5 and 6 primary-school students in Japan. We used path analysis to examine the effects of role-taking ability in moral situations influenced prosocial behavior and school liking. The results indicated that role-taking ability in moral situations influences on school liking via prosocial behavior. The results can be helpful in understanding and improving children’s adjustment to school

Development of new methods to calibrate centre of pressure obtained from force platform

Kinetics and kinematics data are measured using force platforms and three-dimensional cameras in the gait analysis laboratory. Reducing errors related to the force platform when collecting data was necessary. This study describes a new calibration method for centre of pressure of laboratory force platforms using a sandal with extended bar. Firstly, a subject was asked to put his weight vertically on various places of the force platforms using the sandal to create a correction table. Secondly, nine validation trials were conducted to examine the accuracy of the force platforms after correction. The data taken from the centre of pressure and the motion capture were analyzed. Then the erroneous position of the centre of pressure data was translated to the correct position by using weighted average of the vector mostly close to the validation point. The method used in this study allowed to reduce the maximum error from 24.6 mm to 2.7 mm

In cases of hikikomori, psychosocial process from stage of initial recontact with society to decision to find a job

The object of this study is to clarify the psychosocial process, in hikikomori cases, leading from the stage of initial recontact with society to the decision to find a job using a job assistance facility. Throughout the whole process, along with the focus on the relationship with parents, particular attention was also paid to the influence of the relationship with other people and staff encountered at the job assistance facility. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with former hikikomori and the experiences of ten former hikikomori were analyzed using Modified Grounded Theory Approach. From the time there hikikomori felt that they were no longer being criticized so much, as their parents started to take a less critical attitude, they could feel welling up inside them the strength to embark on something new, while there was also interplay among the three factors of“ trying to do their own thing,”“ hope for the future” and a“ vague sense that things were going to be all right.” At some point, the hikikomori decided to look for a job assistance facility as a“ first step towards asking for help” and there, thanks to exchanges with the staff and other people through activities, they felt welling up inside them the strength to work. Overall“, help from parents” in the sense of an awareness of their child’s independence played a part.

Why and Why Now? Understanding the Rapid Rise of English-medium Instruction in Higher Education in Japan

    Get PDF
English-medium instruction (EMI) of content courses is a growing trend in higher education in Japan. As of 2013, over 1/3 of Japanese universities offered EMI courses, mainly in humanities and social sciences, and this number has been steadily growing over the past 15 years. The timing of the growth in EMI can be tied to shifts in how internationalization is viewed among higher-education stakeholders, administrative and structural changes at universities, changes in the relationship between universities and the government, and the rising importance of university ranking tables. Underlying rationales for EMI implementation can be understood in terms of wider global trends towards greater internationalization, and the massification of higher education in Japan. Other oft cited rationales for EMI implementation, financial incentives or the inward looking tendencies of Japanese youth, do not appear to be significant drivers

Welfare needs and producing a support system in public housing

In this research, through the welfare needs of residents living in public housing, the aim is to make recommendations for creating relationships that can mutually help each other. Analysis was conducted from items such as "degree of neighborhood association", "content of problems related to daily life", "whether or not to help". The problems of the residents were diverse. Under the special nature of public housing, it was not only housing districts where the aging rate was necessarily high. As a result, the increase in the number of young people is expected as a supporter, but young people responded negatively to regional support and neighbors' association. In particular, women in 40s to 50s had "work" and "anxiety in the future" as problems, and there were also cases where it was difficult to deal with regional support in daily life. On the other hand, there were no consultation partners, and isolated situations were seen in the area. In addition to creating a mechanism of matching towards regional support, role of administration is sought. It is important to lead to the creation of relationships where faces can be seen in the area
