Subjective Well-Being in Ohio Survey Study
Course Code: ENR/AEDE 4567The "Subjective Well-Being in Ohio Survey Study" aimed to assess self-reported well-being across Ohio's 88 counties, utilizing a survey methodology modeled after the US Happiness Report. Despite limitations in sample representation, the study gathered 667 responses from 71 counties, revealing insights into happiness trends and correlations. Key findings included a positive relationship between age and happiness, as well as happiness and perceived worthwhileness, contrasted by a negative correlation between anxiety and happiness. Themes of Relationships and Social Connections, Health and Well-being, and Creativity and Hobbies emerged prominently from qualitative analysis. Recommendations for future studies emphasize securing grant funding for random sampling methodology to ensure representative data collection, expanding survey questions to encompass broader indicators of well-being, and fostering partnerships with institutions like Ohio State University Extension for wider survey distribution. The Effect of Electrostatics on the Trajectory and Adhesion of Dust Particles in Jet Engines
Despite the continued advancements in jet turbine engines to be more efficient and run hotter, foreign object damage (FOD) still poses a large problem and can negate some of the improvements. Extensive research has been done on how FOD such as dust particles can impact cooling holes and build up within engines over time, but there has been limited research on the influence of electrostatic forces on these particles. This research aimed to investigate how electrostatics from the atmosphere and tribocharging affect the trajectory and adhesion of dust particles within jet turbine engines. Three tests were conducted: a vertical drop test within a uniform electric field, an angled drop test on a charged plate, and an impingement cooling deposition test using a charged target. In the vertical drop test, 0-20µm Arizona Road Dust (ARD) was dropped through an electric field 90cm tall and 10cm apart. Mass fractions were collected on different sections of the electric field to determine alterations in the particles’ trajectory. The angled drop demonstrated the influence of charge on the tested dust’s adhesion strength by dropping the 0-20µm ARD on a 10° tilted, 90cm tall, charged plate. The impingement cooling deposition test simulated engine conditions, with 0-10µm ARD blown through a narrow tube at high velocity and temperature impacting a charged target. The results indicated that at low speeds the electric field significantly influenced the ARD trajectory, with smaller particles more affected than larger particles. Increased voltage in the angled drop test correlated with larger deposits at the top of the plate, which showed higher adhesion strength of the dust. Surprisingly, higher plate voltage in the impingement cooling deposition test led to decreased dust accumulation in the region of interest. Providers percieved barriers to opioid treatment access in Franklin County, Ohio
Background: The amount of people suffering from Opioid Use Disorder continues to increase in
Franklin County, Ohio. With this rise comes an increase in the need to provide access to appropriate treatment. The concept of access must be understood through multiple dimensions to accurately assess the barriers patients face when seeking treatment. These dimensions are acceptability, accommodation, affordability, accessibility, and availability.
Methods: We developed and administered an online survey to employees in addiction services at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. This survey asked about and assessed various perceptions as to why people in Franklin County may have difficulty locating and receiving OUD treatment. The survey was created based on previous questionnaires and surveys that measure healthcare access, along with definitions of five dimensions of access outlined in an article by Penchansky and Thomas. 22
Results: There were seven respondents, all employed through the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. Of these respondents, four identified as Social Workers, two identified as ‘Other’, and one identified as a Peer Navigator. All but one respondent is a full-time employee. Participants were asked to rank the five dimensions of access based on what they perceived to be their patients’ most pressing barriers and the results were as follows: 1. Acceptability, 2. Accommodation, 3. Affordability, 4. Accessibility, 5. Availability. When asked about their patients’ health literacy, 71% of participants said most of their patients would be classified as having basic health literacy. Providers also stated there is a waiting list to receive treatment and people are likely to wait one to three weeks. Other notable findings were 85% of respondents feeling there are ‘definitely’ or ‘probably not’ a sufficient number of specialists in Central Ohio to treat the number of people seeking treatment for opioid use disorder.
Conclusion: Overall, providers highlighted acceptability, accommodation, and affordability as the most important concerns among the patients they see. Answers to other survey questions, however, highlight issues mainly among accommodation and availability. Perception of AI in Healthcare: 5000 Baby Project
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a new technology, one whose term originates from 1956- less than 70 years ago.2 Originally being used for things like the automotive industry, as well as computers. But now, the interest turns to healthcare. The market for AI in healthcare has been projected to be $187 billion in 2030.6 But how do the public and hospital staff view AI in healthcare? A recent study in 2021 noted some concerns, such as insurance coverage, the cost of it, as well as technological failures, and the possibility of hacking.10 While there are plenty of articles regarding AI, there are less about public opinion. Seeking to gather data about public opinion, a survey was sent out to Nationwide Children’s staff and interns asking 5 different statements. Each respondent gave a numerical value in regards to the statements and these results were graphed. These results indicated that while AI is accepted by some, it still isn’t as widely accepted as some other technological healthcare advances such as computed tomography (CT) scan and X-rays. Deep Learning Improvements for Sparse Spatial Field Reconstruction
Accurately reconstructing a global spatial field from sparse data has been a longstanding problem in several domains, such as Earth Sciences and Fluid Dynamics. Historically, scientists have approached this problem by employing complex physics models to reconstruct the spatial fields. However, these methods are often computationally intensive. With the increase in popularity of machine learning (ML), several researchers have applied ML to the spatial field reconstruction task and observed improvements in computational efficiency. One such method utilizes a sparse mask of sensor locations and a Voronoi tessellation with sensor measurements as inputs to a convolutional neural network for reconstructing the global spatial field. In this work, we propose multiple adjustments to the aforementioned approach and show improvements on geoscience and fluid dynamics simulation datasets. Experimental Measurements and Numerical Finite Element Models of Radial Indentation
Incremental Profile Forming (IPF) is a flexible manufacturing process that allows for the forming of complex design profiles on tubular structures. Since its invention at the Technical University of Dortmund (TUD) in 2013, IPF has been the focus of numerous research projects aimed at improving the accuracy of formed part geometry. These projects have shown that open-loop control of the IPF process is inadequate to ensure part geometric tolerances suitable for industrial production. To achieve the required accuracy of formed part geometry, improvements are needed in the sensing of profile geometry, as well as a deeper understanding of the process mechanics to enable the development of control-oriented models. This thesis accordingly presents novel strategies for assessing the accuracy of laser line sensors and aligning them to measure cross-sectional and longitudinal profiles during forming on the IPF machine at TUD. In addition, numerical Finite Element (FE) models for the elementary process of radial indentation were developed in Abaqus and corroborated with experimental measurements. The dynamic response of servo motors controlling indenter motion were also experimentally measured to determine their significance for model-based control schemes. The results showed that the laser line sensors record accurate data within 0.05 mm for use in the IPF process. Additionally, it was found that the laser line sensors can be quantitively aligned in-plane and with a global origin, allowing for coordinate transformations from each sensor with an accuracy of less than 0.2 mm. Stress resultants from the FE process model also showed that circumferential forces are dominant near the indentation region, with dominance relationships being more involved in other regions. Finally, results demonstrated that the indenter velocity was accurate to within 1.16% of the commanded velocity, indicating the indenting servos have a strong ability to reject forming loads during IPF. This work supports the development of both improved sensing and an enhanced understanding of the process mechanics during IPF, paving the way for future model-based control to enhance the capabilities of IPF and reduce the part geometric tolerances to within values suitable for industrial production.The National Science FoundationNo embargoAcademic Major: Mechanical Engineerin
Comparing Immune Reconstitution Following Post-Transplant Cy Myeloablative vs. Reduced Intensity Transplants
The incidence of graft versus host disease (GVHD) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) remains a significant obstacle to successful outcomes. Although the efficacy of post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) as prophylaxis to GVHD has showed its ability to target and kill T cells that cause GVHD, PTCy myeloablative treatment has been linked to delayed T cell reconstitution. Reduced-intensity transplants can be utilized since it is associated with lower rates of acute and chronic GVHD, yet similar overall survival compared to Tac/MTX. Therefore, this proposed study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of PTCy reduced intensity (RIC) as prophylaxis for GVHD and compare the immune reconstitution ability with PTCy myeloablative intensity (MAC) and Tac/MTX control group. By utilizing the OMIP-042 protocol for staining antibodies in flow cytometry and FlowJo software for analysis, the results suggested that the monocyte populations were significantly affected after transplant. PTCy MAC patients (with GVHD) had significantly more monocytes compared to Tac/MTX MAC (no GVHD), while Tac/MTX RIC (no GVHD) patients had significantly more monocytes compared to PTCy RIC patients (either with GVHD or no GVHD). PTCy MAC patients (with GVHD) had increased monocyte populations compared to PTCy RIC patients (with GVHD), who also had increased monocyte populations compared to PTCy RIC (no GVHD) patients. There was no significant difference in immune reconstitution between GVHD vs. no GVHD patients. Further studies should be conducted to include patient samples on Day 90 and include more patient samples to detect the immune reconstitution trend. The results of this study could help understand the immune reconstitution in current prophylaxis for GVHD and improve patient outcomes associated with HSCT.No embargoAcademic Major: Pharmaceutical Science
