    "Mukashi, Mukashi…" is a fictional novel set in the late Kamakura period of Japan (13th century) that explores mythology, folklore, and history. A young noblewoman of the imperial court undergoes the traditional Hero’s Journey in the wake of an abrupt coup d'état, becoming an onna-musha (female warrior) and leaving behind her home and urban life to fulfill her late brother’s karmic destiny. The story enters the realm of the fantastic when the heroine answers the call for adventure from a divine messenger. The captive imperial princess – and heir apparent to the throne – in turn begins to orchestrate her escape, creating agency within the narrative as an intelligent and resourceful figure and not merely an object or pawn of the Shōgun’s ambition. A court diviner, or onmyōji, who foresaw the coup begins to reaffirm his own faith in the Heavens. An ambitious warlord overthrows the reigning Shōgun (military dictator) and attacks the Imperial city, setting into motion the events of the story. The novel explores benevolent and malevolent Japanese spirits – yōkai such as tengu, kitsune, and oni.     The ReVamp Collective

    The ReVamp Collective is an innovative interior design project in an adaptive reuse building in Franklinton. This design research aims to address how to create an environment that promotes sustainable fashion and the adaptive reuse of clothing and to help fulfill a closed-loop cycle within the community. This unique program offers a dual-purpose space, part learning, and part thrift store. It will serve as a place for those interested in the fashion world to come in and learn how to upcycle clothing into new items. These will include sewing, screen-printing, and digital design courses, and will also serve as credit-bearing coursework for educational opportunities. The street-level thrift store component of this project will be home to all of the items that are created during the aforementioned courses. This project now aligns with the United Nations Sustainability Goal #8, which states to “promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.” The ReVamp Collective helps to promote a closed-loop cycle within Franklinton by turning clothing waste into something new while continuing to generate business back into the community.No embargoAcademic Major: Interior Desig

    Exploring Rhythm and Melody as Modes of Language Acquisition with Novel Words

    Most research on music and language learning examines music as a sum of many parts. The current study draws from the ideas of Lawson-Adams et al. (2022) by splitting music into two main components: rhythm and melody. In this study, participants learned 21 novel word and object pairs presented in three conditions (Spoken, Chanted, Sung). Participants viewed one of three videos which trained them on the 21 word-object pairs, seven in each condition. Following the video, participants completed a word-object association test which asked them to match the correct picture to each novel word. Participants viewed the same video and completed a second association test, then completed a yes/no test. Results indicated no significant effect of condition. However, there were main effects of musicianship, in which musicians scored higher regardless of condition, and test block, indicating learning over time.No embargoAcademic Major: Psycholog

    The Effects of Genetic Risk Factors for Late Onset Alzheimer’s Disease on the Sleep-Wake Cycle in Mice Following Traumatic Brain Injury

    Traumatic brain injury (TBI) impacts at least 1.5 million people every year and is an environmental risk factor for Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Notably, specific genetic risk loci have been identified to greatly increase the risk of developing Late Onset AD (LOAD). Two of these genetic risk factors include the Apolipoprotein E4 (Apoe4) allele and the Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 2 (Trem2) R47H variant. These factors have been shown to work synergistically with TBI to worsen functional outcome and exacerbate neuroinflammatory processes. It is shown that incidence of both TBI and LOAD contribute to chronic sleep disruptions (1, 2). The aim of this study is to investigate how these genetic risk factors interact with TBI to influence sleep-wake regulation. To investigate this interaction, we employed lateral fluid percussion injury (LFPI) on mice containing either the APOE3 allele as a genetic control or the APOE4 allele and TREM2R47H variant. Sleep was monitored up to 14 days post injury (DPI) using implanted electroencephalogram/electromyograph (EEG/EMG) telemetry sensors and subsequently analyzed to examine differences in sleep-wake stages as well as in sleep- wake bouts. We hypothesized that mice with both TBI and the A4/Trem2R47H genotype would have increased dysfunction in sleep expression, sleep quality, and sleep consolidation compared to A3 controls. We found that the A4/Trem2R47H mice spent less time sleeping in REM and had a lower number of REM sleep bouts, which indicates that genotype impacts sleep independent of the presence of TBI. While previous studies signal that TBI has little to no effect on REM sleep, our data points out that may not necessarily be the case.     Utilization of an Adaptive Monte Carlo Framework for Benchmarking of Data-Driven Tools and Physics-Based Models

    There is a concurrent need for physics-based models of complex systems and data-driven tools for the design, analysis, and uncertainty quantification of such systems in a variety of fields. As the fidelity of these models increase, computational cost grows in hand. A benchmarking scheme utilizing the Adaptive Monte Carlo (AMC) framework developed at The Ohio State University will allow for more effective cross model comparison. With AMC serving as a reference, the precision and accuracy of different implementations and the associated computational cost can be contrasted to inform decisions on which model will best address the needs of the target case. A case study involving a Direct Moment Closure (DMC) implementation for the propagation of Van der Pol Oscillator moment dynamics was examined. The DMC implementation directly integrated the moment dynamics derived from the Van der Pol equations of motion using the ode45 solver function in MATLAB. AMC is a user-defined process in which accuracy is guaranteed for the selected quantities of interest. This is achieved through particle addition to the distribution to maintain results within the user-specified error bounds and is what makes AMC a capable benchmark for model comparison. With AMC the particles were propagated according to the Van der Pol dynamics and the moments of the data set were computed in post processing. Examination of the first order moments showed divergent behavior from zero in the DMC implementation. This is due to the truncation of the stable higher order terms which must occur in the direct integration. The AMC model remained a zero mean process due to its accuracy being guaranteed. Results indicated that AMC did a better job of capturing the zero-mean process of the first order moment dynamics over time. However, the AMC simulation took far more computational power than the DMC model. Future work involving models that are currently being used in industry can further develop this framework.     A Recent Nurse Graduate Mentorship Program for New Graduate Nurses at an Academic Medical Center

    Background: Approximately 70 % of new graduate nurses will leave their first job within three years and each vacancy can cost $88,000. A formal mentorship program for new graduate nurses can help reduce attrition and enhance job satisfaction among nurses. Objective: To improve job satisfaction of new graduate registered nurses enrolled in a new graduate residency program, to improve the mentors’ perception of effectiveness and behaviors using the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) Mentor Self-Assessment, and to achieve mentee program satisfaction. Methods: This evidence-based project (EBP) included cardiac step-down nurses at a large academic medical center. Three mentor preparation classes were held in person and recorded for those who could not attend. AMSN Mentor Self-Assessment was obtained before and after the nurse mentorship program. The AMSN Mentoring Program Satisfaction Survey was measured after the completion of the program. The mentees were given the AMSN Job Satisfaction Scale before and after the nurse mentorship program. Findings: The participants (N=12) included 6 nurse mentors and 6 new graduate nurses. Job satisfaction pre and post new graduate surveys mean scores increased from 4.19 to 4.66, respectively. AMSN Mentors Self-Assessment pre and post scoring increased from a mean score of 0.75 to 1.06, respectively. Overall, the mentee program satisfaction survey scored a 4.88 out of 5.A three-year embargo was granted for this item

    Patient and Provider Perception of Chronic Urological Pain (CUP)

    Chronic urological pain, while not life-threatening, severely impacts a patient’s physical and psychological health. Chronic urological pain (CUP) results from conditions such as Interstitial Cystitis, Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Vulvodynia, and Chronic Orchialgia. These conditions result in pain or discomfort in the pelvic region for longer than 3 months and are accompanied by urinary frequency and urgency. CUP can be difficult to diagnose and treat due to a limited understanding of patient risk factors and effective treatment options. Some studies suggest psychological stress may increase patient pain perceptions and may have an impact on who develops chronic urological pain. It is becoming increasingly apparent that physiological factors alone are insufficient in addressing patient symptoms. This paper identifies factors related to a patient’s psychosocial needs and links them to their pain experience. This paper highlights the interconnectedness of physical and social experience to chronic urological pain. After reviewing the literature, recommendations are made to improve treatment plans and further research in chronic urological pain.A one-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Medical Anthropolog
