    Development of Cathode Catalysis for Co-Electrolysis of CO2 and H2O

    The increase in CO2 emissions and the strained future energy capabilities of fossil fuels have driven research to focus on sustainable energy. To address these alarming issues, high-temperature co-electrolysis of CO2 and H2O conducted within a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) can be utilized. It not only reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, but also generates usable synthesis gas (H2 and CO). This synthesis gas can be further processed into light hydrocarbons via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Therefore, it is evident that improving the SOEC is of upmost importance. In this study, the double perovskite cathode catalyst Sr_(2-x)Fe_(1.55)Mo_(0.45)O_(6) (SFM) will be investigated for its high electronic and ionic conductivity, which is ideal for the co-electrolysis of CO2 and H2O at high temperatures. The study will highlight various permutations of the base SFM via A-site deficiency and nickel and cobalt doping, which improve the electrical conductivity and the chemical activity. The proposed study will centralize on developing a cost-effective, chemically active catalyst for the aforementioned electrolysis reactions to ensure SOEC’s will become a viable economic competitor in the marketplace.A three-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Chemical Engineerin

    Evaluation of a Leadership Mentor Pilot Program for Nurses of Color

    Background Mentoring is critical for career advancement, especially for leadership and succession planning. Problem A significant proportion of the United States (U.S.) healthcare workforce comprises people from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. Evidence shows that this population is under-represented from management to C-suite levels. Method To support the development of a more racially diverse inclusive nursing workforce and nursing leadership pipeline, implementing a nurse leadership mentor program for nurses of color addresses the disparity of racial and ethnic diversity in nursing leadership. The project aimed to examine the impact of a mentorship program designed for emerging nurses of color interested in pursuing leadership positions. Intervention The three-month initiative “Stepping Up”, adopted a quality improvement framework for implementation and evaluation. The program design principles were adapted and integrated from the Leadership Institute for Black Nurses (LIBN) (Wesley & Dobal, 2009). The program consisted of 3 monthly 1.5 hour educational and group mentoring workshops led by experienced leaders focused on three main leadership topics: 1.) Leadership 101, emotional intelligence, and effective communication; 2.) Networking and Building Meaningful Relationships; and 3.) Resume Building and Interviewing. Supplemental literature relevant to new leaders were offered as resources to the program participants. Each mentor had 2-3 mentees in their pod, where group mentoring took place after the sessions. Mentors and mentees also had the opportunity to set up 1:1 time to further assist their career enhancement. Mentors were provided a guide to aid in interactive discussions utilizing psychologist Albert Bandura 4 sources of self-efficacy (see Appendix F), “the belief that you can accomplish a particular task” (Brown-DeVeaux et al., 2021). The project began with collectively gathering qualitative individual participants (mentees) confidence in themselves to lead others and their beliefs in how their leaders will support their leadership. Evaluation of the program included a narrative qualitative approach using feedback sessions to thematically analyze qualitative feedback about the mentorship program. The program findings included informative qualitative feedback on the necessity of a mentorship program supporting nurses of color to pursue leaderships. Participants reported the program provided greater insight on leadership aspects to make them successful and feeling more confident in networking within the organization.A five-year embargo was granted for this item

    Nonbinary and Non-heterosexual Experiences in Sport Over the Life Course: Patterns and Realized Costs and Benefits

    Outstanding Sports & Society Presentation, 2024 OSU Sports Analytics ConferenceUtilizing data from the National Sport and Society Survey (N = 3,993), this study investigates sport participation histories among U.S. adults with a focus on people who are nonbinary and/or non-heterosexual. As a part of the analysis, I scrutinize perceptions of the benefits of one’s sport participation experiences. In particular, I use multinomial logistic regression analyses to investigate the relationships between nonbinary and non-heterosexual identities and the relative risks of never participating in organized youth sport, playing continually while growing up, and playing and playing and dropping out of youth sport. Next, I use bivariate logistic regression to predict experiencing sport related mistreatment. Then, I use ordinary least squares regressions to model reports of the perceived benefits of one’s athletic experiences, including their impact on one’s sense of belonging, self-esteem, connection to community, and social status. Results indicate that especially nonbinary and non-heterosexual individuals are less likely to have participated in youth sport and more likely to have dropped out of sport prior to adulthood, relative to playing continually while growing up. Non-heterosexuals are more likely to have experienced mistreatment in their sport-related experiences. Both nonbinary and non-heterosexual individuals are particularly less likely to report that their athletic experiences had a positive impact on their sense of belonging, self-esteem, connection to their community, and social status. Overall, these findings are consistent with an understanding of the highly gendered nature of sport making the implicit gendered expectations within sports and society explicit—often leading to discomfort and a relative lack of inclusion for those who defy gender norms. Despite the recent increase in the politicization and scrutiny of transgender athletes especially, as well as substantial backlash directed towards the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, there has been a paucity of research focusing on nonbinary athletes and the ways that they interact with sport and the benefits they are able to gain from their sport involvement. This research offers novel insights into this understudied population as well as the broader LGBTQ+ population.     Impact of Telehealth Interventions in Patients with Diabetes and in Obesity Management

    Obesity and type 2 diabetes are conditions that can be challenging to manage in primary care due to clinical and socioeconomic barriers including limited provider appointment availability, limited appointment time for evidence-based interventions that promote positive outcomes, deficits in patient’s knowledge in self-care and resources, challenges in transportation, and work-related barriers. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement evidence-based telehealth interventions in the management of type-2 diabetes and obesity in middle-aged adults. Four telehealth appointments were completed per participant which focused education on the American Diabetes Association’s seven self-care behaviors. A pre- and post- survey of facilitators, barriers, and knowledge or use of community resources was performed. SMART goals were established and measured weekly. Pre- and post-biometric measures were obtained. 100% of participants reported an increase in diabetic self-care knowledge and physical activity as well as decreases in financial and emotional barriers. SMART goals were partially or wholly met (combined) 100% weekly. Initial biometric measures demonstrated overall decreases in weight, body mass index, glycated hemoglobin, and total cholesterol. Findings supported positive outcomes with the implementation of telehealth interventions in diabetic and obese populations.A three-year embargo was granted for this item

    In-vitro network formation of Collagen IV: an atomic force microscopy analysis

    Collagen IV (Col IV) is an important structural component of the basement membrane underlying epithelial and endothelial cells. In this thesis, I examined conditions under which Col IV formed networks in-vitro. By using the atomic force microscope (AFM), I examined the effect of collagen concentration, temperature and ionic strength on network formation. My results indicate Col IV concentration was a critical factor in modulating network formation. Incubation at physiological temperature versus 4 oC did not significantly alter the network morphology whereas a higher ionic strength resulted in reduced flexibility and straightened contours of Col IV molecules. My results elucidate in-vitro conditions which can facilitate network formation of Col IV.     Perception of AI in Healthcare: 5000 Baby Project

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a new technology, one whose term originates from 1956- less than 70 years ago.2 Originally being used for things like the automotive industry, as well as computers. But now, the interest turns to healthcare. The market for AI in healthcare has been projected to be $187 billion in 2030.6 But how do the public and hospital staff view AI in healthcare? A recent study in 2021 noted some concerns, such as insurance coverage, the cost of it, as well as technological failures, and the possibility of hacking.10 While there are plenty of articles regarding AI, there are less about public opinion. Seeking to gather data about public opinion, a survey was sent out to Nationwide Children’s staff and interns asking 5 different statements. Each respondent gave a numerical value in regards to the statements and these results were graphed. These results indicated that while AI is accepted by some, it still isn’t as widely accepted as some other technological healthcare advances such as computed tomography (CT) scan and X-rays.
