    Medieval Agricultural Practice and Exchange at Arpa Village, Armenia

    The Arpa Village site was a major settlement in the Medieval Age in Armenia, a period which has sparse research. This project analyzes the archaeobotanical remains (carbonized seeds and plant parts) of several loci of this settlement to understand further the agricultural, economic, and wild plant remains. These remains allow for comparison and connection to the lifestyles of the people who lived in this area. The Arpa Village was a bustling village as well as along the trade route of the Silk Road throughout the late Middle Ages. Past archaeobotanical research of this region of Armenia has been done contextualizing the palaeobotanical remains from a caravanserai site as well as a nearby cave, but more research must be fulfilled in various contexts of the geographical location to compare the results for further conclusion. This study broadens our understanding of agriculture and trade within Armenia along the Silk Road trade network. Archaeobotanical remains were identified to plant taxa (family, genus, or species level when possible), the data was categorized for analysis of the remains within the samples. Wheat (Triticum aestivum/durum) was the most encountered cultivated taxa followed by barley (Hordeum vulgare) and millet (Panicum sp./Setaria sp.). Other cultivated seeds found included various legumes (Fabaceae), grape (Vitis vinifera), rice (Oryza sativa), pine nut (Pinus sp.), peach (Prunus persica), and pomegranate (Punica granatum). Many of these seeds indicate various forms of agriculture and seasonality and suggest the possibility that the Arpa village was an economic trading center. The wild and weedy taxa consisted of over 25 families and 50 species, but the Rumex/Carex/Polygonum and Chenopodiaceae/Chenopodium sp. categories occurred in the greatest number of samples as well as consisted of the highest prevalence of the wild and weedy seeds overall. The diversity of the wild and weedy seeds leads to the findings that the landscape and geography of Arpa was quite diverse during this era. The data gathered from the few Armenian archaeobotanical studies can be compared to better contextualize and create a better image of the agricultural, economic, and lifestyle practices that occurred in the Middle Ages of Armenia.No embargoAcademic Major: Medical Anthropolog

    Numerical Investigation and Optimization of a Miniature In-Pipe Hydropower Turbine

    Pico hydropower energy generation, an emerging field in renewable technology, has faced limited funding and attention in the past due to the inherent lower efficiencies found for smaller scale turbines. This research addresses the need to provide a small amount of power in situations where consistent power availability and water quality may be a concern. Specifically, this research numerically investigates the performance of miniature turbine designs suitable for integration within water piping of facilities or homes to provide enough wattage for UV LED water disinfection at the point of use (POU) scale. Aiming to maximize the energy extracted from water flowing at POU water pipe pressure and flow rates, this study conducts Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. This research evaluates the hydrodynamic performance of a pre-manufactured turbine. After this, changes to the nozzle geometry were made in an attempt to improve efficiency. After varying the height of the nozzle, a max hydraulic efficiency of 22.05% was found at a flow rate of 2.2 GPM and a runner rotational velocity of 2200 RPM. The results suggest that further numerical analysis of various changes to the turbine geometry would be useful. A more complete nozzle geometry parameterization study is recommended as the next optimization step. Changing the runner hub size, and the number of blades on the runner is another recommended course of action.     Developing a 3D Metastasis Model for Metastatic Progression in Medullary Thyroid Cancer

    Thyroid cancer is currently the fastest-growing cancer in the United States. Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) originates from the parafollicular cells, otherwise known as C cells, of the thyroid gland and has a significantly worse prognosis than all other thyroid cancers. The majority of MTC patients present with advanced disease, already having either regional or distant metastases. Unfortunately, currently, existing treatments cannot improve most MTC patients’ prognosis in these advanced disease states. Therefore, this study aims to create and validate a 3D model capable of identifying the underlying signaling pathways that govern metastatic progression with the hope of discovering potential novel therapies for MTC in future applications. To test this model, we will 1) perform LIVE/DEAD assays to validate cell viability and 2) model MTC metastasis using cell injection metastasis-on-a-chip (MOC) designs.     Moving Away Shutdown K(qu)arantine (MASK) Study: Examining the Lived Exerperiences of Out-of-State College Students

    The goal of this research study was to understand the experiences of out-of-state students living on campus during the COVID-19 pandemic at The Ohio State University (OSU). The out- of-state student population at OSU makes up roughly a quarter of the entire undergraduate student population and they bring diversity, unique perspectives, and different traditions to campus life (OSU Enrollment, 2023). Alternatively, out-of-state students move away from home to further their educational outcomes. As a result, out-of-state students may enter higher education with less of a support system nearby or fewer family and other social ties, which can be a significant lifestyle adjustment. To date, no studies, to my knowledge, examined the experiences of out-of-state students during the COVID-19 pandemic; illuminating a prominent gap in the literature. This qualitative study sought to explore how out-of-state college students coped with changes and challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, eight undergraduate students from states other than Ohio participated in one-hour interviews. Using thematic coding procedures, findings indicated this population experienced notable challenges during the pandemic such as difficulty learning in online environments, challenges building relationships, and mental health challenges. Many coped by procrastinating or turning to negative outlets like alcohol, whereas other students exercised, journaled, or forged new friendships to cope with stress during this time. Findings have the potential to elevate the experiences of out-of-state college students regarding their overall health, mental health, coping abilities, and outlook on learning to inform future prevention, intervention, and crisis response efforts in the future.No embargoAcademic Major: Social Wor

    A Review of Reinforced Concrete Building Progressive Collapse Studies

    In an era marked by increasing exposure to extreme events, the robustness of building structures against unforeseen hazards has emerged as a critical concern and significant efforts have been made in identifying how to prevent local failures from propagating during the progressive collapse process. This study delves into the phenomenon of progressive collapse in reinforced concrete buildings, aiming to enhance understanding and mitigation strategies against extreme loading hazards. Through a systematic analysis of diverse sources, including case studies and experimental data, a novel database is formulated, comprising instances of partial or complete structural collapse due to progressive failure. The database encompasses contextual information, structural typology, geometry, failure characteristics, and consequences of collapse. To identify structural vulnerabilities, this database systematically presents information on hazards causing failure, failure locations, types of collapse, as well as structural information to facilitate a nuanced understanding of collapse triggers and propagation.     Goodness-of-fit in Preschool-aged Children's Relationships with Mothers and Fathers

    Human Experience (The Ohio State University Denman Undergraduate Research Forum)The concept of goodness-of-fit was initially proposed by Thomas and Chess in 1977, and pertains to the alignment between a child’s temperament and the requirements, anticipations, and possibilities present in their environment (Shiner et al., 2012). Goodness-of-fit is an important concept in understanding children’s development, especially in the preschool years, a critical period of development for children to refine their social, emotional, and behavioral skills (Trawick-Smith, 2014). In this study, we focused on three research questions: 1) How does parental support affect developmental outcomes in preschoolers? 2) How does child temperament affect child emotional development? 3) Does the goodness-of-fit between child temperament and parenting behavior affect children’s internalizing and externalizing behavior? This study used survey and observational data from 112 families (mother, father, 4-year-old child) that participated in The Parents and Preschoolers Study. Measures used in this study included mothers’ and fathers’ observed parenting behavior, child temperament reported by parents, and child internalizing and externalizing behaviors reported by parents. We found that children with high levels of surgency exhibit more externalizing behaviors when mothers choose higher sensitivity parenting behaviors. This contradicted our expectations, as high sensitivity levels in parenting are generally considered to yield positive outcomes. This suggests that parents should choose the parenting style that matches their children’s characteristics, because the mismatch between the child’s temperament and parenting style would lead to challenges in parent-child interactions and the child’s social-emotional development.
