    Modeling friendship formation, measuring peer effect and optimizing class assignment

Hayes Advanced Research Forum)Our research leverages neural network method to approximate the functional relationship between students' own characteristics and their friendship preferences, providing valuable insights into the intricate processes of how students form connections. This approach allows for an examination of friendship dynamics beyond what traditional linear models can offer. Secondly, replacing the linear-in-means assumption with a more reasonable friendship weighted assumption, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of heterogeneous peer effects based on students' characteristics. This allows us to discern the varying impacts of peer influence across different demographic and behavioral dimensions, contributing to a deeper understanding of peer effect distribution. Lastly, through counterfactual analysis, we go beyond describing observed patterns and actively identify optimal class assignment strategies that maximize students' cognitive scores. This practical dimension of our research holds implications for educational policies and practices, offering actionable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to enhance student outcomes through thoughtful class assignments.No embarg

    Trends in Raptor Admittance to Urban and Rural Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers

    Honorable Mention in Insect and Other Animal Sciences, 2024 Denman Undergraduate Research ForumAs top predators, raptors serve as indicator species of ecosystem health while also playing a regulatory role through their consumption of rodents. However, they are adversely impacted by threats associated with increased built-up land cover, habitat loss, and human interaction. Research examining the common causes of raptor injury and mortality is vital toward conservation efforts protecting the animals and their ecosystems, especially in areas with high urban land cover. One avenue for exploring these causes involves wildlife rehabilitation centers. Previous research on wildlife health indicates an abundance of orphaned animals and “trauma” injuries in the centers across the United States. However, there is a lack of raptor-specific analysis. The purpose of this study was to examine raptor admission records at urban and rural wildlife rehabilitation centers in the Midwest and Appalachian Mountain regions. The selected regions provide an abundance of resources for wildlife while acting as a migration corridor. The records from seven centers across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia were collected to analyze the relationships among species, their age, and the location, reason, and outcome of admittance, including release and mortality data. Results show that admissions were concentrated around areas of higher impervious surface with vehicle and building collision serving as the most frequent admission cause, highlighting the role humans play in wildlife health. More birds were admitted to the rural centers, whereas mortality was higher in the urban ones. The most common cause of mortality was multiple injuries, followed by those involving wings, legs, and hips contributing to decreased movement and prey hunting. Orphaned birds showed a lower probability of mortality compared to the birds admitted because of a disease, attack, or collision. Survival rates were higher in young birds compared to those for adults and juveniles. Most common species admitted were hawks followed by owls, reflecting the abundance of these animals in the region. Owls spent the most time in treatment compared to the other birds. This study offers important insights into targeted, species- and location-specific conservation efforts for raptors and provides wildlife rehabilitators with knowledge of the hotspots, admittance causes, and prognoses for individual species.College of Arts and Sciences academic enrichment grantEEOBA three-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Zoolog

    Crowd Scene Anomaly Detection in Online Videos

    Engineering and Technology (The Ohio State University Denman Undergraduate Research Forum)The prevalence of surveillance cameras in public places has led to an extremely pressing need for effective position and crowd monitoring, as well as anomaly detection. This paper tends to exhibit an incorporated approach that combines state-of-the-art computer vision techniques for comprehensive crowd surveillance. The main features of our approach are summarized into four steps: (a) Object detection and tracking; (b) Geometric rectification for positioning; (c) Motion extraction; and (d) Anomaly detection. First, this uses YOLOv5's Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model in making efficient detection of objects, focusing on spotting individuals within crowded scenes. After detection, a strong mechanism for tracking is established with the help of the DeepSORT algorithm, which can track the person across frames. It must gain the people's position in the video frame and analyze motion data with the guarantee of capture of camera-scene geometry. Each frame thus gets converted from the 3D perspective to a 2D bird's eye view within the surveillance video, giving a guarantee of capture of the geometry of a camera scene. Motion anomaly detection is addressed through statistical methods, with Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) being employed to identify deviations from normal motion patterns. Extensive experiments conducted on different online crowd scene video datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed anomaly detection mechanism. Overall, this integrated approach proposes a promising solution to crowd surveillance, further development of object detection, tracking, and anomaly analysis for monitoring public spaces.No embargoAcademic Major: Computer Science and Engineerin

    Nec pluribus impar: Classics and the Sun King in Early Modern France

    This thesis examines how Louis XIV (1638-1715) constructed his public image as the "Sun King" by associating himself with famous figures from antiquity, both historical and mythological. Despite being concerned with modernity and establishing France as the new cultural center of Europe, Louis’ royal propaganda drew extensively on ancient heroes, emperors, and gods from a broader European canon, including Augustus, Alexander the Great, Perseus, Heracles, and above all, Apollo. By analyzing examples of literature, portraiture, and architecture that contributed to the king’s image, I will explore how Louis engaged with classical models as a means of legitimizing his authority to other European powers—and, eventually, asserting France’s superiority over them. Building off the example of Versailles, I will also evaluate the home of a king or emperor as a physical representation of power, and how the inclusion of Classics within such a space might contribute to its impact. Ultimately, the aim of this project is to identify how ancient ideas helped to shape the reign of one of the most influential monarchs in European history, how Louis XIV repurposed the past in order to uphold his absolutist rule, and how the presence of Ancient Greece and Rome was felt and interpreted in the Early Modern period—and beyond—as a result.No embargoAcademic Major: ClassicsAcademic Major: Romance Studie

    Inhibition of TGF-β/Smad signaling attenuates extracellular matrix accumulation in a human ex-vivo model of pulmonary fibrosis

    Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive lung disease characterized by accumulation of scar tissue and decreased lung function. Mechanisms of disease onset have yet to be fully understood. However, activation of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β)/Smad signaling, followed by repeated injury to the epithelium, results in transdifferentiation of fibroblasts into profibrotic fibroblasts, leading to an increase in collagen expression and accumulation in the extracellular matrix (ECM), resulting in deteriorating lung function. Therefore, we proposed a TGF-β/Smad inhibitor to prevent ECM accumulation. We used human precision cut-lung slices (hPCLS) treated with TGF-β as a human ex-vivo model to retain native lung tissue structure, cellular complexity, and ECM protein composition. hPCLS were stimulated for 48 h with active recombinant human TGF-β (10ng/ml). Then, a TGF-β/Smad inhibitor (SB431542, 10µM) was added to the culture for 72 h and hPCLS were later harvested and analyzed to evaluate the expression of ECM proteins by immunofluorescence and PCR. We found high expression of collagen 1a1, collagen 3a1, fibronectin, and α-SMA after TGF-β stimulation. Treatment with the TGF-β/Smad inhibitor attenuated their expression. Our data suggests that the ex vivo model of hPCLS can be used to evaluate anti-fibrotic therapies. We demonstrated that specific inhibition of TGF- β results in the attenuation of the expression and deposition of proteins of the ECM. These results corroborate that modulation of TGF-β activity using SB431542 inhibitor has a therapeutic potential for patients with pulmonary fibrosis.National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHI)A one-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Biomedical Scienc
