    Previous Trauma Impacts Human Behavior During Equine Assisted Services

    The National Council for Behavioral Health estimates that 70% of adults have experienced some type of trauma in their lifetime. Trauma can be broadly categorized as psychological trauma (e.g., witnessing a death) or physiological trauma (e.g., traumatic brain injury). Symptoms of trauma may include anxiety, depression, and avoidance of associations to trauma. Recent research suggested that participation in Equine Assisted Services (EAS) may reduce trauma symptoms in various populations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of previous trauma on human behavior during EAS. Participants (n = 36; 18-55 yr) completed the Posttraumatic Checklist for DSM-V (PCL-5) to assess previous psychological trauma and The Ohio State University Traumatic Brain Injury Identification (OSU TBI-ID) to assess previous physiological trauma. Participants completed four consecutive, weekly 30-minute sessions with an equine of their choice at The Ohio State University Equine Facility. Each session was video recorded to quantify behaviors using scan sampling every 30 s. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS v 9.4. No differences were observed in the frequency of standing behavior between trauma groups or sessions (p > 0.05). However, participants with both previous psychological and physiological trauma were observed walking more frequently during sessions compared to participants with no previous trauma or only psychological or physiological trauma (p < 0.05). Similarly, participants with both psychological and physiological trauma were observed touching the equine more often compared to participants with no previous trauma or only psychological or physiological trauma (p < 0.05).     A Judicial Extension of the Comparative Agendas Project and the Supreme Court Database

    This paper summarizes the objective of establishing a relationship between the issues most important to the federal judicial, executive, and legislative branches, adding to this by comparing issues from writ petitions from the Department of Justice to the issues in the writs granted and cases taken by the Supreme Court. It will also look at another project with topics for congressional hearing data, State of the Union addresses, and Supreme Court decisions. Each of these will be categorized into topics from a guided Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model, with trends then being mapped to conclude which issues showed relatively more positive correlation during the same period. I also add a time-lagged variable for each of the three branches to compare the effects of the previous year of one variable to the current year for another. Over time, I found that many of the 21 issues in Comparative Agendas saw minimal longitudinal changes in all three branches. Meanwhile, the initial sample of writ petitions has been categorized into 12 topics including a miscellaneous topic, and further comparisons will be made after reapplication. Overall, this two-part study establishes correlations between issues in the three branches of government, introduces a field of exploration concerning the action and reaction relationship between the Department of Justice and the Court itself, and presents the ongoing efforts made to merge the two projects.No embargoAcademic Major: Political ScienceAcademic Major: Economic

    Biofeedback-Based VR Therapy in Pediatric Patients

    Children and adolescents who need surgery are at a particularly high risk for chronic postoperative pain and opioid consumption. Because of this, our team has been working to develop a non-pharmacologic approach to treating postoperative pain. Biofeedback-based virtual reality is a new therapy intended to reduce pain and anxiety in children and adolescents after they’ve undergone surgery. We have developed ForeVR, a device that measures real-time physiologic data and syncs this with VR breathing games. The aim of this project was to validate the data recorded by the ForeVR device by comparing it to data simultaneously recorded by the Massimo Rad-97, a standard monitoring device commonly used in clinical care. After analyzing the results, we concluded that ForeVR provides breathing data consistent with the Massimo Rad-97, particularly for average respiratory rate and overall respiratory rate time courses. Our next step is to gather more data for validity of ForeVR.     Agriculture, an art within itself in which the farmer, who can be considered an artist, manipulates the land to create the delicious, curated dinner plate sitting in front of us, “just as a farmer examines their landscape–soil condition, weather patterns, seed variety, consumer interest, tradition and more–an artist, too, must consider the holistic factors that surround and situate their work,” (De Witte, 2016). So many artists and artworks have explored these sentiments that land has to offer through subject matter and uses of materials and mediums. Through my research, I explore several artists and artworks engaging with land and agriculture in order to identify how art and art education can be utilized in connection with the land in order to reengage people with art and its relationship to the land we inhabit. For this research work, I observed, identified, and analyzed an array of artists, designers, farmers, environmentalists, land developers, horticulturalists, students, and organizations, to gather an array of perspectives as to how art’s relationship with the land is viewed. I engaged with several community artworks that explore and celebrate art’s relationship to the local land. I utilized my gathered research to yield a planned unit of study to engage students with the land as they thought about and created art inside and outside the classroom environment. Engaging students with land and agriculture through art, students came to learn the importance of the land and environment we as humans occupy. Creating these conversations and opportunities around art and the land, students came to realize all the amazing possibilities the land has to offer us and why it is important that we as humans give back to our land for in return generations to come can enjoy all our land has to offer.No embargoAcademic Major: Art Educatio

    Evaluating Environmental, Economic, and Social Impacts of BioResin Derivatives for Amika, Eva NYC, and Ethique Product Packaging

    Course Code: AEDECON 4567The report conducted by a 2024 EEDS Capstone Team explores the sustainability of BioResin derivatives as alternatives to current packaging materials used by amika. Analyzing the environmental, economic, and social impacts of corn, seaweed, sugarcane, and bamboo derivatives during the cultivation phase, the study employs both quantitative and qualitative methods. Key data sources include a life cycle analysis conducted with Amika's COMPASS database, which quantitatively estimates the environmental impacts, and qualitative assessments of biodiversity, ecological footprint, cost efficiency, community impacts, and more. The report concludes that seaweed represents the most viable BioResin alternative given its lesser environmental impact, bright economic future, and positive social implications.     The supplementation of pumpkin seeds as an alternative to reducing parasite burden in naturally infected lambs

    CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum 1st PlaceParasite management is a major concern for the sheep industry because of the increased cost associated with treatment as well as the growing risk of parasite resistance to common small ruminant (i.e., sheep and goat) anthelmintic products. At the same time, fall agritourism results in many pumpkins going to waste after the season concludes. Pumpkin seeds have demonstrated anthelmintic properties in vitro that may be applied on-farm to control for parasitic infection. Therefore, my objective was to observe changes in parasite burden due to pumpkin seed (PS) supplementation, estimated by measuring lamb body weight (BW), fecal egg count (FEC), FAMACHA© eye score (FAM), and packed cell volume (PCV). I hypothesized that the supplementation of PS would decrease the parasite burden within the host. Each treatment group had 5 pens of 2 sheep each (n=10/treatment) and all sheep were fed a common pelleted diet with chopped hay. The control group (CON) was supplemented 0.21 kg/hd per day of WSC while the pumpkin treatment group supplemented 0.45 kg/hd of PS per day. These treatments were isocaloric and limit fed for four weeks to prevent confounding by refusals. Analysis of the data included a fixed effect of pen and treatment, random effect of lamb, and repeated measure of week. Lamb FAM and log(FEC) did not differ between groups, with FAM (1.08 and 1.02; P=0.17), and log(FEC) (2.94 and 2.96; P=0.90) for CON and PS, respectively. However, lamb PCV was greater (P<0.01) for PS (38.7%) than CON (36.4%). Lamb BW was lesser for those lambs in the PS treatment when compared with CON [(40.2 kgs Vs 42.4 kgs), P<0.01)]. Furthermore, when monitored one month after the completion of PS supplementation, there was numerical evidence for compensatory gain as the daily weight gain tended to be greater for PS lambs when (0.25 kg /day) compared to CON lambs (0.19 kg /day; P=0.14). Under the conditions of this experiment, parasite burden did not differ between treatments. The lack of difference may be attributed to decreased feed intake of PS and behavioral variation within pen. More work is needed to find a preferred method of including PS in a diet to improve feed intake and thus treatment efficacy. Additionally, the variability of FEC urges experiments involving the need for fecal analysis to include more regular collection intervals to ensure that changes in parasite burdens are captured accurately.Ohio Sheep and Wool Program (OSWP)Will C.
