Board Certified Nurse Coaches' Self-Reported Practices/Outcomes, Populations, and Personal Demographics
Background: Nearly half of Americans suffer from at least one chronic disease, which the CDC estimates accounts for nearly 75% of aggregate healthcare spending. Research indicates that about 70% of chronic diseases may be preventable based on lifestyle behaviors. Nurses are uniquely situated to offer health and wellness coaching to promote health-enhancing behaviors.
Aims: The purpose of this study was to survey nationally certified nurse coaches to identify populations they are serving, chronic diseases they coach on, and other practice-related data.
Methods: Following IRB approval, an anonymous, electronic survey was sent via an email link to a registry of certified nurse coaches using Qualtrics Software. The survey questions (response options and open-ended) focused on demographics, populations served, practice aspects, and outcome data evaluated. Gift cards were offered to all participants.
Results: 424 certified nurse coaches responded to the survey. 96.6% were female and most attended a nurse coaching training program (95.5%). The most common period of coaching individuals was 3 months with 30-90 minute sessions. Most common reasons for coaching included life balance, nutrition, health responsibility, emotional/spiritual/physical wellness, and mental health. The most common client diseases were depression/stress/anxiety, Alzheimer’s/dementia, cancer, chronic pain, heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. 61 (14.4%) nurse coaches reported using biomarkers to evaluate their practice.
Conclusions: The study informs efforts to improve nurse coaching programs, standardize outcome tracking, and better understand nurse coaching through the collection of demographic and practice-related data. Public Perception on the Recent Implementation of Gender Quotas: A Case Study in Sierra Leone

Addressing if a gender quota achieves more descriptive representation of women or substantive representation of women can provide a tool for measuring the efficacy of these quotas. This study investigates if the quota fulfills more substantive or descriptive representation for women and hypothesizes that the quota incorporates both types of representation based on the differing gender focuses of Sierra Leoneans. Sierra Leone ranks 181 out of 191 on the United Nations Gender Inequality index and as a means of improving women’s equality, the country passed a gender quota in November of 2022 that mandated that women receive 30% of elected government positions (Choat). Sierra Leone’s recent implementation of a gender quota makes this country a prime case study when investigating these quotas. In addition, the use of public opinion surveys allows the public’s perception of this gender quota to be revealed. Through using the Afrobarometer questionnaire data in Sierra Leone, specific survey questions were analyzed to produce qualitative data for both women’s substantive and descriptive representation. For women’s descriptive representation, a majority of Sierra Leoneans indicated the importance of governmental support of women’s equality and advancing women’s leadership opportunities. For substantive representation, gender differences between important issues in the country necessitated the importance of women representatives to advocate for women’s needs. Inflammatory Biomarkers, Diet Quality, and Distress in Advanced Cancer Patients
Background: The number of cancer cases in the United States is on the rise. Those living with advanced cancer experience higher levels of psychological distress than those with earlier-stage disease and the general population. Recent research suggests that inflammatory biomarkers, such as eotaxin and tumor necrosis factor-⍺ (TNF-⍺), may be associated with psychological distress. Additionally, diet quality is crucial for the overall health and well-being of cancer patients, but the association between diet quality and distress in advanced cancer patients requires further exploration.
Methods: This pilot study recruited 28 participants with advanced cancer diagnoses including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and leukemia from outpatient oncology clinics. Participants completed several self-report questionnaires– The Center for Epidemiological Disease Depression Scale (CESD), The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and The James Supportive Care Screening (JSCS). Participants also provided optional blood samples for biomarker analysis and 24-hour dietary recall interviews. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and partial correlations to explore the relationships between inflammatory biomarkers, diet quality, and psychological distress.
Results: Participants exhibited significant levels of distress, with an association between lower eotaxin levels and higher levels of depression. There were no significant associations found between eotaxin levels and other measures of distress or between TNF-⍺ levels and distress. Similarly, no significant associations were observed between diet quality and distress measures.
Discussion: This study contributes valuable insights into the association between biomarkers of inflammation, diet quality, and psychological distress in advanced cancer patients. Further research with a larger, more diverse sample and comprehensive dietary assessment is needed to fully investigate these associations. These findings suggest the ability to use biomarkers, such as eotaxin, to identify patients at risk and contribute to future development of interventions to improve depression for individuals living with advanced cancer.No embargoAcademic Major: Psycholog
Curbing Sediment: Controlling Stormwater Pollution using a Novel Curb and Gutter Design
2024 CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum Poster Competition, Honorable Mention in Environmental and Plant SciencesAs urbanization occurs, the increase in impervious surfaces, soil compaction, and removal of vegetation reduces the infiltration capacity of soils, reducing groundwater recharge. Urban runoff causes many water quality concerns and environmental issues, including stream erosion, pollutant transport, and flooding. With respect to water quality, transport of nutrients, metals, sediment, micropollutants, and emerging contaminants by stormwater is an urgent challenge in urban areas worldwide. Stormwater control measures (SCMs) are often implemented by municipalities to curtail these negative impacts on water quality; however, infiltration-based SCMs may become clogged with stormwater-borne sediment over time, greatly reducing their efficacy. Thus, pretreatment devices, such as forebays, filter strips, catch basin inserts, or hydrodynamic separators are implemented upstream of these SCMs to remove sediment and lengthen maintenance intervals. In the urban built environment, space constraints make retrofitting SCMs into existing development difficult and the installation of pretreatment measures even more challenging. Thus, new pretreatment systems need to be developed which fit within the existing road right-of-way. A modified curb and gutter system was designed and tested at laboratory scale; roughness was added to the curb and gutter, with varying degrees of spacing, shape, and depth of indentations, with the intention of reducing the water flow velocity and trapping sediment particles. The best performing designs removed >80% of sediment in simulated stormwater at the laboratory scale. In the current research, the most effective gutter roughness design was selected and implemented on a 60-meter section of Carmack Road on Ohio State University’s west campus. By using the standard curb and gutter on the opposite side of the street as a control for the experiment, we evaluated the performance of this modification. Effluent samples from both the treatment and innovative curbs were collected using automated samplers and tested for nutrients, metals, and total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations to understand real-world benefits of this novel pretreatment. Curbing Sediment provided no significant reduction in pollutant concentrations (TSS, nitrogen and phosphorous species, or trace metals); however, it is suspected that bare soil created by the construction process located adjacent to the treatment curb, impacted the results. Curbing Sediment tended to have lower concentrations of pollutants (compared to the control) in the final 4 months of the study, suggesting that a start-up effect may exist. Thus, continual site monitoring for an additional several months beyond what is presented in this thesis is recommended to holistically evaluate the effectiveness of Curbing Sediment.No embargoAcademic Major: Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineerin
