The Performed Culture Approach: Localization Challenges and Opportunities

    Get PDF
The Performed Culture Approach (PCA) has undergone development and evolution in the past four decades at the Ohio State University (OSU) under the leadership of Professors Emeritus Galal Walker and Mari Noda. The East Asian language pedagogy program at OSU has produced numerous graduate students who are teaching either Chinese or Japanese at various K-16 educational institutions in the United States and beyond. While the theories and practices of PCA have been consistently adopted for the beginner through advanced levels in the East Asian language programs at OSU, its practitioners at other institutions that lack a PCA instructional environment are faced with various localization challenges. This paper traces the history of the development of PCA and highlights its important contributions to the field of foreign language education. It describes the challenges of applying the PCA theories and practices in non-PCA language programs and offers suggestions on how to overcome these challenges and innovate application of PCA in the era of general artificial intelligence

Fostering Second-Culture Understanding and Personal Growth through Chinese Calligraphy: Challenges and Takeaways

    Get PDF
This paper explores the transformative impact of developing a Chinese calligraphy course within a language program. The course design integrates cultural elements like festivals, philosophies, and poetry to provide a holistic and interdisciplinary learning experience. Rather than a lecture-based approach, the curriculum guides learners to connect their personal experiences with Chinese writing through self-reflective practices, fostering deeper cultural understanding. Challenges include maintaining enrollment in non-Chinese-dominant contexts, balancing course complexity and simplicity, and ensuring effective calligraphy demonstrations both in and out of class. Addressing these challenges requires thoughtful course design and guidance. By offering possible solutions, this paper highlights how the course fosters learners' mindfulness, creativity, and technical skills while connecting them to Chinese traditions. Such curriculum development underscores the value of innovative pedagogy in engaging students with this exquisite art form

Xue and Haoxue: Learning Contents and Learning Attitude in The Analects of Confucius

    No full text
The Analects (Lunyu 論語) is a foundational text of Confucian thought, emphasizing the role of learning (xue 學) in attaining the status of junzi (君子), or exemplary person. This paper examines how The Analects redefines junzi from an aristocratic title to a moral ideal accessible to anyone through self-cultivation. Learning encompasses cultural knowledge, classical texts, and virtues such as filial piety, respect, and benevolence. Confucius highlighted the importance of an appropriate attitude toward learning, advocating for diligence, open-mindedness, and the joy of study. The learning and teaching methodologies could resonate with certain hypotheses in the Performed Culture Approach. The Analects presents learning as a holistic process that integrates knowledge acquisition with the cultivation of moral and social virtues. By embodying these principles, individuals can achieve personal growth and contribute meaningfully to society, realizing the qualities of a true junzi

Prediction of Optimal Parameters for Wire-Arc DED Welding Using a Multilayer Perceptron Trained on Synthetic Data Generated by a Generative Adversarial Network

    Get PDF
The global demand for 3D printing technologies has grown significantly, influencing various industries and extending into the welding sector through additive manufacturing (AM). In welding, AM involves constructing metal parts layer by layer using wire or powder feedstock. This method offers advantages such as material efficiency and design flexibility. However, bead overlapping between layers often results in defects like surface irregularities and weakened structural integrity. This paper presents an automated approach to optimize welding parameters using a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network. Traditional methods for selecting parameters such as current, voltage, and wire feed rate are time-consuming and resource-intensive. To address limited data availability, synthetic data were generated using a generative adversarial network (GAN). By training the MLP on this expanded dataset, the system predicts parameters that improve bead quality and inter-layer bonding. This AI-driven approach reduces the need for extensive physical experimentation, minimizes material waste, and shortens development cycles. No embargoAcademic Major: Computer and Information Scienc

Exploring Sentence Structure, Rhythm, and Storytelling in Dialectal Writing: A Case Study of the Shanghai Dialect Novel Fanhua 繁花

    Get PDF
Fanhua (繁花), written in Shanghainese, is set against the backdrop of over 30 years of promoting Putonghua in mainland China. Since its 2013 publication, it has sparked significant academic discussion (e.g., Mao 2018; Liu 2019; Yu 2024). However, most research emphasizes its literary significance rather than its linguistic contributions. This study examines Shanghainese’s role in the novel, focusing on its influence on sentence structure, rhythm, and narrative style. A comparative analysis of the single-volume edition and the original serialized online version reveals the author’s meticulous crafting of dialectal features. Key elements include the sentence-final particle “吧” (ba), four-character expressions, and a strong sense of rhyme, all contributing to the novel’s unique identity. The language in Fanhua is characterized by short, fragmented colloquial phrases, rhythmic patterns dominated by four-character structures, and stylistic elements aligned with Huabenti (话本体storytelling tradition). These features shape the narrative’s linguistic rhythm and deepen its connection to Shanghainese oral traditions. By integrating sentence structure, rhythm, and traditional storytelling techniques, this study highlights how Fanhua redefines the dialectal novel, showcasing Shanghainese as an integral component of its creative and cultural identity. This perspective underscores the linguistic richness of the text and its contribution to understanding dialectal innovation in contemporary Chinese literature
