The Role of Parent-Child Communication, Goal Agreement, and Shared Decision-Making on Health-Related Quality of Life in Children with Advanced Cancer
Objective: The influence of family dynamics on adjustment among children with advanced cancer is an understudied research area. Thus, this study examined associations between family communication, decision-making, and goal agreement on child health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among children with advanced cancer to inform psychosocial interventions.
Methods: Data were from a larger, longitudinal study at a large pediatric hospital. Forty-eight mother-child dyads of children (ages 10-23 years old) with advanced cancer (i.e., relapsed/refractory disease or prognosis <60%) were included in the current study. Families completed a demographic questionnaire, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS), Family Communication about Cancer (FCM), Family Roles Questionnaire (FRQ), and Cancer Information Questionnaire for Parents (C-CIQ) at enrollment. Separate hierarchical regression models were used to cross-sectionally examine: (a) demographic factors, (b) mother-child communication, and (c) family shared decision-making and treatment goal agreement as predictors of child HRQOL.
Results: HRQOL, especially physical functioning, was impaired for most children in this study. Child age (β = .35, p = .042), problems in mother-child communication (β = .40, p = .030), and more open attitudes (β = .40, p =.03) and practices (β = .39, p = .034) regarding mother’s cancer-specific communication were positively associated with child physical functioning. Most families engaged in shared decision-making about their child’s medical care, which was linked to child social functioning, t(33) = 2.66, p = .012. Finally, families reported high levels of agreement on cancer-related goals.
Conclusions: Certain demographic (e.g., child age) and family processes (e.g., family communication) may be linked to HRQOL in children with advanced cancer. However, given the cross-sectional nature of this study, the direction of this effect cannot be assumed. Additional research with larger, more diverse samples is needed to clarify the interplay between family factors and child HRQOL in the context of advanced cancer. Navigating Methodological Shifts: A Reflexive Account of Researching Cross-Regional Families in Rural North India
This paper provides a reflexive account of the methodological journey undertaken during a study on cross-regional families in rural North India. Initially conceived as a qualitative study utilizing biographical narrative interviews with emerging adults (aged 18-25), the research faced challenges related to participant recruitment, limited narrative depth, and ethical considerations surrounding family dynamics. Insights from the pilot study led to a methodological shift toward a mixed-methods embedded design, incorporating both qualitative interviews and quantitative socio-demographic data. This paper details the rationale behind these adaptations, discusses the epistemological and ontological shifts that informed the research redesign, and reflects on the implications of researcher positionality. By documenting these methodological transitions, this study contributes to the growing discourse on research adaptability by demonstrating how reflexive engagement can strengthen qualitative inquiry in sensitive and evolving research contexts, particularly in contexts involving marginalized or underrepresented populations. The paper underscores the importance of iterative methodological flexibility in qualitative research and highlights the nuanced challenges of studying social stigma, caste dynamics, and identity formation within cross-regional families. Remote interview.This interview of Ronald Sanders was one of 15 conducted by students in English 4567 (Rhetoric and Community Service) to capture as many stories as possible from former Ohio State students associated with the 1968 sit-in at the Administration Building (now Bricker Hall) that led to the arrests of 34 Black students, now known as the “OSU 34.” In addition to recalling his participation in the sit-in, Anderson describes his subsequent arrest, the overall climate on campus for Black students at the time, and how the course of his life changed because of his involvement in the protest.

The Role of Moral Information in Changing Mental Representations
When meeting new people, individuals spontaneously form impressions of them. These impressions can be surprisingly resistant to change except when individuals are provided with information that allows them to reinterpret their prior evaluations (Mann & Ferguson, 2015). Using reverse correlation, a data-driven technique to visualize mental representations, this study investigated whether the mental representations people form of novel others are subject to the same sort of updating that can occur following exposure to information that casts doubt on our prior evaluations. Specifically, we examined how participants' mental representations of a fictional character, accused of infanticide in a TV miniseries of the Agatha Christie novel And Then There Were None, changes based on moral information provided in three conditions (a) positive (she’s falsely accused), (b) negative (she’s rightfully accused), or (c) after reinterpretation (she’s falsely accused followed by evidence that she was rightfully accused). After watching one hour of edited video, eighty-two participants' mental representations of the character were measured. The results showed that the mental representations of the character were rated as more trustworthy for participants in the positive video condition, however after reinterpretation, the mental representation changed to be in line with the negative condition. Thus, we show that the reinterpretation information provided to participants influenced their prior impressions of the character's physical appearance, effectively reversing their mental representation. This study extends our understanding of mental representation and demonstrates the importance of moral character in person perception. Extreme heat, urban experimentation, and visions of past futures in Seville, Spain
This study investigates bioclimatization, a natural spatial cooling method, as an adaptive measure to climate change-induced extreme heat in Seville, Spain. It focuses on the micro-regional experimental pilot project CartujaQanat, intended to serve as a model for revitalizing street life and integrating bioclimatic techniques in urban public spaces. The project is located on the Isla de la Cartuja, site of the 1992 Universal Exposition, where large-scale bioclimatic strategies were first implemented to produce a cooler microclimate for visitors but were abandoned soon after. The following questions guide this study: How does the Isla de la Cartuja site shape the significance and reality of the CartujaQanat project? How do different actors (engineers, architects, planners, civil society) interpret the potential of bioclimatization for implementation in Seville and beyond? This study applies a mixed methods approach using primary and secondary materials, stakeholder interviews, and site observation from three weeks of fieldwork in Seville in June 2024. There is an established literature, technical understanding, and commitment to bioclimatization among academic and civil society circles which faces political barriers to its implementation in the city and a prioritization of technocratic interventions that fit a neoliberal climate urbanism (Long & Rice, 2019). Alternatively, community-based efforts advocate for bioclimatization centered on green space, which aligns more with climate justice. Investigating the regulation and characterization of the dihydroxyacetone phosphate shunt for carbon metabolism in pathogenic species.
The dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) shunt is a carbon and/or sulfur metabolism pathway found in bacteria that can metabolize the nucleosides 5’-methylthioadenosine and 5’-deoxyadenosine. Both compounds lead to DHAP which can enter central carbon metabolism. 5’-methylthioadenosine also leads to (2-methylthio)acetaldehyde for sulfur metabolism and 5’-deoxyadenosine also leads to acetaldehyde for carbon metabolism as well. The DHAP shunt pathway genes in Escherichia coli include a kinase, isomerase, and aldolase, all of which are expressed together as a single polycistronic message. In E. coli, the DHAP shunt is associated with Extraintestinal Pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) strains, not intestinal pathogenic or commensal strains of E. coli. ExPEC strains are responsible for various extraintestinal illnesses, including urinary tract infections, sepsis, and meningitis. After further investigation, the DHAP shunt was identified through sequence homology in several additional pathogenic species. However, the physiological role of this pathway is unknown in many bacteria. To fill this knowledge gap, this project aims to investigate the transcriptional regulation of the DHAP shunt operon in E. coli and the function of DHAP shunt homologs in other identified pathogenic species. The first project investigates the promoter region proposed to be responsible for transcribing the DHAP shunt at different levels when the cell experiences changes in carbon availability. We observe two promoters for the DHAP shunt genes based on preliminary data. Future work is required to identify the regulation of transcription from each of these two promoters. Identifying regulatory elements of the DHAP shunt promoter in ExPEC strains could advance studies on how this new region influences gene expression, shedding light on the regulatory and adaptive mechanisms of carbon metabolism. The second project endeavors to provide initial characterization of the DHAP shunt enzyme homologs from additional pathogenic species. E. coli Rosetta cells transformed with pET28 carrying a DHAP shunt gene homolog was used to recombinantly synthesize His-tagged proteins that were purified by nickel affinity chromatography. The purified proteins were analyzed for thermal stability via Differential Scanning Fluorometry (DSF) to characterize the homogeneity of the protein population. Future studies will characterize the catalytic properties of the DHAP enzyme homologs from pathogenic species in the metabolism of 5’-methylthioadenosine and 5’-deoxyadenosine. Ultimately, these two projects investigating the regulation and characterization of DHAP shunt pathways will enhance our understanding of the physiological role of the DHAP shunt pathway in diverse bacteria species.No embargoAcademic Major: Microbiolog
