Immigration, Disease, and the Body Politic: The Legal Legacy of the Immigration Act of 1924 as a Eugenic Project
Center for Ethics and Human Values Award for Civil Discourse at the Denman Undergraduate Research ForumEugenics in the United States casts a long shadow over our laws, values, and culture. The American eugenics movement was one of the first to describe immigration as a problem to be regulated and, eventually, solved. The question of immigration is central to how a country perceives its national health. Although the general American ethos prides itself on being a nation built and strengthened by immigration, its policy and litigation on the subject reveal strong eugenic anxieties towards non-Anglo-Saxon immigrants beginning in the early twentieth century, and restricted immigration accordingly. The Immigration Act of 1924 (colloquially known as the Johnson-Reed Act) was a watershed piece of legislation put forward by two prominent eugenicists and placed the first quota system into law that heavily favored Western and Northern Europeans (Ludmerer 61). The policy argues for the associations of undesirable immigrants with disease, disfigurement, and “feeble-mindedness”, which was upheld by a series of legal cases and still impacts immigration law today. There is a detectable throughline from the eugenic rhetoric of immigration in the Progressive Era to the tactics used by recent administrations to enact and popularize race-restricted immigration policy, targeting new immigrant groups but inflaming old fears.A five-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: EnglishAcademic Major: Philosophy, Politics and Economic
The Rabbit Industry: A Survey Review
This research study investigates the current practices, development, and history of the domestic rabbit industry where rabbits are used as pets, breeding animals, market animals, research, and for fur. Roots for the domestic rabbit can be traced back to the Iberian Peninsula and spread across the world by European conquistadors. In the United States, the domestic rabbit continued to evolve for human use as the American Rabbit Breeders Association was founded in 1924. To dive into an understanding of production practices, a survey was distributed and collected nearly 700 responses and represented over 35,000 rabbits. With a focus on demographics and herd management, information was collected on membership, nutrition, disease, and current input on advancements in the industry. The research itself cannot stand alone to represent the entire rabbit population, but highlights an emphasis on consistency within nutrition and gives insight into how future studies may affect rabbit owners not only in the United States but around the globe.No embargoAcademic Major: Animal Science

All our Authors: Open Access Publishing Agreements and Academic Research Library Websites in the United States
Since 2018, open access publishing agreements continue to accelerate in the United States among academic research libraries and their consortia as the global scholarly publishing marketplace shifts, adapts, and transforms to address myriad open access mandates and policies from around the world. In the United States, the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) August 2022 memorandum mandating public access to federally funded research with an implementation deadline of December 31, 2025 is further accelerating this shift as researchers, funders, and publishers work to understand requirements. As different open access publishing models, including Transformative Agreements, pure publish agreements, and Subscribe 2 Open are introduced, piloted, and entered into, academic research libraries must identify approaches to communicate to their campus authors details and information about the various agreements in which they participate on behalf of their universities. This paper examines if and how academic research libraries in the United States present information on their websites to communicate details about open access publishing agreements to their constituents including the following questions: where is this information available? What kind of agreements are listed? Alongside what other resources are these details presented? Are outreach and education opportunities promoted? What kind of contact information is listed for support and help? Understanding how academic research libraries are currently communicating information about these agreements can help to inform future strategies around outreach to researcher authors as well as educational opportunities for librarians in our organizations as content agreements are married with open access publishing benefits.Publisher allows immediate open acces
Binding Affinity Profiles of G-protein Coupled Receptors and Mutated Protein Arginine N-methyltransferase 5
Protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) is an enzyme involved in transcriptional regulation and DNA damage repair, making it an emerging target in cancer therapeutics. Patient-derived PRMT5 mutations identified in the Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC) were analyzed using molecular docking with known PRMT5 inhibitors. Comparative analysis of wild-type and mutant structures revealed alterations in predicted binding affinities, underscoring how point mutations may influence inhibitor efficacy and therapeutic outcome. In parallel, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) has gained attention as a therapeutic target due to the clinical success of GLP-1R agonists in weight management. Interest in cannabinoids such as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) has simultaneously risen with the easing of cannabis restrictions in the United States. Both systems are mediated by G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), suggesting possible molecular overlap. Using molecular docking, the binding of endogenous cannabinoids (2-AG, anandamide) and exogenous cannabinoids (THC, CBD) was compared with danuglipron, a small-molecule GLP-1R agonist, across these GPCRs. Danuglipron demonstrated higher predicted binding affinity to both CB1 and CB2 than any tested cannabinoid ligand, indicating potential cross-reactivity between GLP-1R and the endocannabinoid system. PRMT5 mutations overall had a more destabilizing effect on the PRMT5-inhibitor complex, although CMP5 in the SAM binding site did average a more stable relative energy compared to wild type in the presence of a mutation.NIH- Ruben PetreacaNo embargoAcademic Major: Biolog

Detecting Airplanes through Analysis of RNO-G Background Noise
Project for the 2024 Undergraduate Summer Research Program with The Ohio State University, Department of Physics.This poster is on data analysis research conducted with the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) Collaboration. The detector is currently in development and will eventually search for some of the highest energy particles. It is important to eliminate as much background noise as possible in detector experiments, so this poster discusses our efforts to identify any airplanes that could be a potential source of noise
