Beyond “Function” and “Metaphor” : Wheelchairs in the Video-dance Tiresias＜Special Theme : Humans and Things Weaving a Performance Together : Exploring an Intersection of the Anthropology of Materiality and Performing Arts Studies＞
Get PDF本稿は，車椅子というモノに着目する。車椅子と身体とのあいだにどのよう
な相互作用がみられるのかを分析し，車椅子がいかなる現象や出来事を身体に
引き起こしていくのかを描き出すことを目的とする。考察にあたり，アメリカ
のディスアビリティ・アートの研究者であり活動家でもあるぺトラ・キュッパー
スを中心としてつくられた映像作品『テイレシアス』（2007）における車椅子を
事例として取り上げ，分析を試みた。本作品において，車椅子の物質性（マテ
リアリティ）は，単に身体化されて無意識に沈み込むのみならず，さまざまな
感覚，情動を個々の身体に引き起こしつつ，車椅子がもつ「機能」としての意
味と「隠喩」としての意味に働きかけている。さらに，車椅子と身体が切り結
ぶ個別的で親密な関係性は，車椅子がもつ文化的意味や行為の可能性を開いて
いく契機となりうるものである。車椅子と身体が織りなす経験世界をパフォー
マンスとしてより積極的なかたちで提示することにより，車椅子が生じさせる
身体のディス＝アピアランス（dys-appearance）を創造的な場として捉えなおす
ことができると考えられる。This paper presents analysis of interaction between a wheelchair and the
human body, with the aim of describing the way in which wheelchairs evoke
emotions in the body. This paper specifically describes an examination of
wheelchairs in the video-dance, “Tiresias” (2007), which was created primarily by Petra Kuppers, a researcher and activist of disability arts. In this work,
the materiality of wheelchairs not only sinks into unconsciousness as embodi-
ment; it also evokes various sensations and emotions in individual bodies and
explores the “function” and “metaphor” of wheelchairs. The individual and
intimate relations between the wheelchair and the body present the possibility
of cultural meanings and actions of the wheelchair. By presenting the experience of the wheelchair and the body as a performance, this paper suggests
