an encounter with new material things (i.e., musical instruments). This paper
explores how gamelan instruments brought from Bali affect the performance
and activity of Japanese gamelan players. Originally, Balinese gamelan music
was developed within Balinese religious and communal life. Its instruments
are made for ready adaptation to such cultural and physical conditions.
Therefore, when sent to Japan, they bring inexpedience in several ways. Toaccommodate and perform with such instruments, Japanese gamelan players
struggle to adjust their social and physical environment by conditioning the
physical layout, creating a new network for people, and compromising or
altering their performance itself. In a sense, these instruments were taken
from a Balinese human–object network and were brought to a new network in
Japan. However, this study also presents the argument that gamelan instruments bridge Japan and Bali in somdepartmental bulletin pape

rainforest in ’Are’are of the southern part of Malaita Island, Solomon Islands.
This article presents analyses of a series of events that occurred there andpresents discussion of “global encounters” between indigenous music and the
music industry. The encounter of music is achieved from aspects of contact
through activities, objects, and technologies that comprise music as events.
The author particularly addresses the act of mediation to realize “music” for
each. In doing so, the recording participants make and use objects such as
studio materials and musical instruments as media. For ethnographic descriptions, the author presents a process by which people with different interests,
such as producers, engineers, and performers, negotiate and compromise over
the “music” for each other and partly share one event. Ultimately, by considering musical mediation, different peoples in the globalization era can
encounter each other and share an event while shifting centralitydepartmental bulletin pape
