Existing anthropological studies of Han Chinese society are primarily concerned with the theories of “zongzu (lineage organization)” and “guanxi (social network).” These studies pay much attention to social relationships in ritual activities, but tend to overlook human interaction in everyday life. This paper examines how neighborhood relations are formed or not formed, with a focus on the daily activities of villagers in rural Hubei. It provides detailed ethnographic data of farm work and leisure activities, and argues that “gatherings” within the neighborhood have both a rational function of providing opportunities to exchange information on agriculture, as well as a casualaspect of social exchange. The paper ultimately demonstrates that the “gathering” develops through the random overlapping of time and space between non-specific combinations of individuals, and suggests a potential theory of Han Chinese Society by studying the “gathering” based on the logic of “peng.”departmental bulletin pape
