eat2pic: An Eating-Painting Interactive System to Nudge Users into Making Healthier Diet Choices

    No full text
Given the complexity of human eating behaviors, developing interactions to change the way users eat or their choice of meals is challenging. In this study, we propose an interactive system called eat2pic designed to encourage healthy eating habits such as adopting a balanced diet and eating more slowly, by refraining the task of selecting meals into that of adding color to landscape pictures. The eat2pic system comprises a sensor-equipped chopstick (one of a pair) and two types of digital canvases. It provides fast feedback by recognizing a user's eating behavior in real time and displaying the result on a small canvas called "one-meal eat2pic." Moreover, it also provides slow feedback by displaying the number of colors of foods that the user consumed on a large canvas called "one-week eat2pic." The former was designed and implemented as a guide to help people eat more slowly, and the latter to encourage people to select more balanced menus. Through two user studies, we explored the experience of interaction with eat2pic, in which users' daily eating behavior was reflected in a series of "paintings," that is, images produced by the automated system. The experimental results suggest that eat2pic may provide an opportunity for reflection in meal selection and while eating, as well as assist users in becoming more aware of how they are eating and how balanced their daily meals are. We expect this system to inspire users' curiosity about different diets and ways of eating. This research also contributes to expanding the design space for products and services related to dietary support.journal articl

Old school, new rules: floral meristem development revealed by 3D gene expression atlases and high-resolution transcription factor$2013chromatin dynamics

    No full text
The intricate morphology of the flower is primarily established within floral meristems in which floral organs will be defined and from where the developing flower will emerge. Floral meristem development involves multiscale-level regulation, including lineage and positional mechanisms for establishing cell-type identity, and transcriptional regulation mediated by changes in the chromatin environment. However, many key aspects of floral meristem development remain to be determined, such as: 1) the exact role of cellular location in connecting transcriptional inputs to morphological outcomes, and 2) the precise interactions between transcription factors and chromatin regulators underlying the transcriptional networks that regulate the transition from cell proliferation to differentiation during floral meristem development. Here, we highlight recent studies addressing these points through newly developed spatial reconstruction techniques and high-resolution transcription factor$2013chromatin environment interactions in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Specifically, we feature studies that reconstructed 3D gene expression atlases of the floral meristem. We also discuss how the precise timing of floral meristem specification, floral organ patterning, and floral meristem termination is determined through temporally defined epigenetic dynamics for fine-tuning of gene expression. These studies offer fresh insights into the well-established principles of floral meristem development and outline the potential for further advances in this field in an age of integrated, powerful, multiscale resolution approaches.journal articl

Excellent π-Bowl Semiconductors Based on C70 Subunit

    No full text
As open substructures of fullerenes, aromatic π-bowls are promising candidates as new organic semiconductors, as well as attractive hosts for fullerenes. We demonstrate herein the synthesis and characterization of a novel C2v symmetric π-bowl, pyracyleno[6,5,4,3,2,1-pqrstuv]pentaphene ( 3). Bowl 3 was equipped with two distinctive reactive sites, allowing for bromination and cross-coupling reactions to readily yield functionalized bowls with two 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl ( 5) and triethylsilyl (TES)-ethynyl ( 6) substituents, respectively. Variable-temperature 1H NMR analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated bowl-to-bowl inversions of 3, 5, and 6 at room temperature. By alternating the substituents, the crystal structures of the three π-bowls 3, 5, and 6 could be controlled from 1D linear to 1D slipped to 2D herringbone packing motifs, providing insight into the packing behavior of π-bowls. 1H NMR titration study indicated that the TES-ethynyl substituent enhanced the ability of π-bowl to bind C70 with an association constant of 2485 M22121.TheC70moleculeswithπbowls3and6formed1:1complexes,inwhichC70moleculesaggregatedintozigzagand1Dlineararrays,respectively.Theholemobilityof2.3cm2V22121. The C70 molecules with π-bowls 3 and 6 formed 1:1 complexes, in which C70 molecules aggregated into zig-zag and 1D linear arrays, respectively. The hole mobility of 2.3 cm2 V22121 s22121andelectronmobilityof0.16cm2V22121 and electron mobility of 0.16 cm2 V22121 s$22121 of π-bowl 3 and its complex with C70 were demonstrated, respectively, which proved a great value for the development of aromatic π-bowl semiconductors with tunable properties for organic electronic devices.journal articl

Origin Destination Estimation Carrying Over Rolling Proximity Identifiers with RSSI

    Get PDF
Origin destination (OD) data describing passengers' flows is essential for improving bus route operational efficiency. Manual collection of OD data is still conducted, so automatic OD data acquisition using the internet of things (IoT) is desired. One method utilizes Bluetooth beacon identifiers to understand passengers' flows while considering their privacy. Still, while random MAC addresses can estimate the number of devices there, they are insufficient for generating ODs. In contrast, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government promoted the exposure notification system to prevent secondary infection. The smartphone app exchanges short-term identifiers called Rolling Proximity Identifiers (RPIs), updated every 15 minutes. This research aims to realize tracking during bus rides with only a few RPIs carryovers, since bus rides are only about an hour long at most. We evaluated the system on a bus in Kyoto City and successfully tracked passengers for 55 minutes, the experiment's maximum length.conference pape

Ocean wave energy is a promising clean and renewable energy source to mitigate the global energy crisis and environmental issues. Here, a guided-liquid-based isotropic triboelectric2013electromagnetichybridnanogenerator(iTEHG)isdevelopedforefficientandsustainableharvestingofomnidirectionaloceanwaveenergy.ThefullyenclosediTEHGisbasedonatriboelectricnanogenerator(TENG)andelectromagneticgenerator(EMG),withthestructuredesignofauniqueconcentriccircularelectrodepairbuiltonatiltedsatellitedishinspiredplateforgravityguidedmotionoftheliquid.Thenewlydesignedoceanwaveharvestersolvesthewearandinsufficientcontactproblemsofmainstreamsolid2013electromagnetic-hybrid nanogenerator (iTEHG) is developed for efficient and sustainable harvesting of omnidirectional ocean wave energy. The fully-enclosed iTEHG is based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and electromagnetic generator (EMG), with the structure design of a unique concentric circular electrode pair built on a tilted satellite-dish-inspired plate for gravity-guided motion of the liquid. The newly-designed ocean wave harvester solves the wear and insufficient contact problems of mainstream solid2013solid-interfaced TENGs, prolonging the device lifetime, and improves controllability of liquid compared with other solid2013liquidinterfacedTENGs.Thisproducesimmediatepowerandcurrentdensitiesof7.252013liquid-interfaced TENGs. This produces immediate power and current densities of 7.25 00B5W00B7cm00B7cm20133 and 4.85 00B5A00B5A00B7cm$20133 with undifferentiated 360° coverage. The iTEHG can charge a 0.1 F supercapacitor to 3.1 V and continuously drive a wireless thermometer for over 26 min. It exhibits superior performance for practical applications in real ocean environments, proven by continuously driving 320 high luminosity LEDs in Sanya Bay, China, even during quiet periods of ocean activity. The proposed design is expected to have a broad prospect for future blue energy harvesting and inspire development of self-sufficient ocean sensors.journal articl
