Diagnosing psychiatric disorders from history of present illness using a large-scale linguistic model
Aim: Recent advances in natural language processing models are expected to provide diagnostic assistance in psychiatry from the history of present illness (HPI). However, existing studies have been limited, with the target diseases including only major diseases, small sample sizes, or no comparison with diagnoses made by psychiatrists to ensure accuracy. Therefore, we formulated an accurate diagnostic model that covers all psychiatric disorders.
Methods: HPIs and diagnoses were extracted from discharge summaries of 2,642 cases at the Nara Medical University Hospital, Japan, from 21 May 2007, to 31 May 31 2021. The diagnoses were classified into 11 classes according to the code from ICD-10 Chapter V. Using UTH-BERT pre-trained on the electronic medical records of the University of Tokyo Hospital, Japan, we predicted the main diagnoses at discharge based on HPIs and compared the concordance rate with the results of psychiatrists. The psychiatrists were divided into two groups: semi-Designated with 32009years of experience and Residents with only 2$2009months of experience.
Results: The model's match rate was 74.3%, compared to 71.5% for the semi-Designated psychiatrists and 69.4% for the Residents. If the cases were limited to those correctly answered by the semi-Designated group, the model and the Residents performed at 84.9% and 83.3%, respectively.
Conclusion: We demonstrated that the model matched the diagnosis predicted from the HPI with a high probability to the principal diagnosis at discharge. Hence, the model can provide diagnostic suggestions in actual clinical practice.journal articl
Visualyre: multimodal album art generation for independent musicians
Album art often reflects the trends and themes of the songs in a given collection, and even the identities of the musicians who produced it. It therefore plays a central role in fomenting a potential listener’s first impression of the work. As such, musicians strive to find suitable images for this purpose, and those with limited financial resources or design skills may struggle to do so. Here, we report the development of Visualyre, a deep learning$2013based application that generates album art images from users’ song lyrics and audio files. This tool relies on generative adversarial network models to generate images from textual input (lyrics) and style transfer models to adjust the image according to the mood of the audio. We then report the results of a user study involving 35 amateur and independent musicians who tested the system. Results suggest that Visualyre was generally well received and largely effective in its intended purpose: providing musicians with a resource for generating their own album art.journal articl
An ER-accumulated mutant of yeast Pma1 causes membrane-related stress to induce the unfolded protein response
Upon dysfunction of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), namely ER stress, eukaryotic cells provoke the unfolded protein response (UPR), which is triggered by ER stress sensors including Ire1. While the ER luminal domain of Ire1 is known to directly recognize misfolded soluble proteins accumulated in the ER, the transmembrane domain of Ire1 is involved in its self-association and activation upon membrane lipid-related abnormalities, which are so-called lipid bilayer stress (LBS). Here we inquired how the ER accumulation of misfolded transmembrane proteins induces the UPR. In yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, a multi-transmembrane protein, Pma1, is not transported to the cell surface but aggregates on the ER membrane when carrying a point mutation (Pma1-2308). Here, we show that GFP-tagged Ire1 co-localized with the Pma1-2308-mCherry puncta. This co-localization and the UPR induced by Pma1-2308-mCherry were compromised by a point mutation in Ire1 that specifically impairs its activation upon LBS. We presume that Pma1-2308-mCherry locally affects the properties (probably the thickness) of the ER membrane at its aggregation sites, where Ire1 is then recruited, self-associated, and then activated.journal articl
Finite temperature effects on the structural stability of Si-doped HfO2 using first-principles calculations
The structural stabilities of the monoclinic and tetragonal phases of Si-doped HfO2 at finite temperatures were analyzed using a computational scheme to assess the effects of impurity doping. We proposed a method that the finite temperature effects, i.e., lattice vibration and impurity configuration effects, are considered. The results show that 6% Si doping stabilizes the tetragonal phase at room temperature, although a higher concentration of Si is required to stabilize the tetragonal phase at zero temperature. These data indicate that lattice vibration and impurity configuration effects are important factors determining structural stability at finite temperatures.journal articl
Fundamental and Applicative Aspects of the Unfolded Protein Response in Yeasts
Upon the dysfunction or functional shortage of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), namely, ER stress, eukaryotic cells commonly provoke a protective gene expression program called the unfolded protein response (UPR). The molecular mechanism of UPR has been uncovered through frontier genetic studies using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism. Ire1 is an ER-located transmembrane protein that directly senses ER stress and is activated as an RNase. During ER stress, Ire1 promotes the splicing of HAC1 mRNA, which is then translated into a transcription factor that induces the expression of various genes, including those encoding ER-located molecular chaperones and protein modification enzymes. While this mainstream intracellular UPR signaling pathway was elucidated in the 1990s, new intriguing insights have been gained up to now. For instance, various additional factors allow UPR evocation strictly in response to ER stress. The UPR machineries in other yeasts and fungi, including pathogenic species, are another important research topic. Moreover, industrially beneficial yeast strains carrying an enforced and enlarged ER have been produced through the artificial and constitutive induction of the UPR. In this article, we review canonical and up-to-date insights concerning the yeast UPR, mainly from the viewpoint of the functions and regulation of Ire1 and HAC1.journal articl

ACOGARE: Acoustic-Based Litter Garbage Recognition Utilizing Smartwatch
Litter has become a social problem. To prevent litter, we consider urban planning, the efficient placement of garbage bins, and interventions with litterers. In order to carry out these actions, we need to comprehensively grasp the types and locations of litter in advance. However, with the existing methods, collecting the types and locations of litter is very costly and has low privacy. In this research, we have proposed the conceptual design to estimate the types and locations of litter using only the sensor data from a smartwatch worn by the user. This system can record the types and locations of litter only when a user raps on the litter and picks it up. Also, we have constructed a sound recognition model to estimate the types of litter by using sound sensor data, and we have carried out experiments. We have confirmed that the model built with other people’s data enabled to estimate the F-measure of 80.2% in a noisy environment through the experiment with 12 participants.journal articl
Application of a Two-Dimensional Mapping-Based Visualization Technique: Nutrient-Value-Based Food Grouping
Worldwide, several food-based dietary guidelines, with diverse food-grouping methods in various countries, have been developed to maintain and promote public health. However, standardized international food-grouping methods are scarce. In this study, we used two-dimensional mapping to classify foods based on their nutrient composition. The Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan were used for mapping with a novel technique2014to visualize high-dimensional data. The mapping results showed that most foods formed food group-based clusters in the Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan. However, the beverages did not form large clusters and demonstrated scattered distribution on the map. Green tea, black tea, and coffee are located within or near the vegetable cluster whereas cocoa is near the pulse cluster. These results were ensured by the k-nearest neighbors. Thus, beverages made from natural materials can be categorized based on their origin. Visualization of food composition could enable an enhanced comprehensive understanding of the nutrients in foods, which could lead to novel aspects of nutrient-value-based food classifications.journal articl
Reliability Evaluation Framework for Obfuscating Transformations in Program Code.
This study proposes a framework to evaluate the reliability of obfuscating transformations in program code. The reliability of an obfuscating transformation can be evaluated by whether the transformation makes program code harder to analyze while preserving the functionality. The proposed framework applies obfuscating transformations to a collection of program code, executes the test cases, and measures the ratio of obfuscated program code that pass the test cases and the mean of the distance of opcode sequences before and after obfuscation. Two experiments have been conducted to evaluate the reliability of existing 43 obfuscating transformations implemented in well-known obfuscation tools, Tigress and Obfuscator-LLVM. The proposed framework revealed that there were combinations of obfuscating transformations which did not preserve the functionality of programs, even though each of the transformations worked properly for the programs.journal articl
pH Effect on Particle Aggregation of Vanillin End-Capped Polylactides Bearing a Hydrophilic Group Connected by a Cyclic Acetal Moiety
To enhance the pH-responsiveness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) particles, desired vanillin acetal-based initiators were synthesized and functional PLA was initiated at the chain end. PLLA-V6-OEG3 particles were prepared using polymers with various Mn values of 24002013ketone acetal. Moreover, it was found that the polymer chain length (Mn) influenced the aggregation rate. TiO2 was selected as the blending agent to improve the aggregation rate. The PLLA-V6-OEG3 blended with TiO2 was found to accelerate the aggregation rate compared with that without TiO2, and the best ratio of polymer/TiO2 was 1:1. To study the effect of the chain end for stereocomplex polylactide (SC-PLA) particles, PLLA-V6-OEG4 and PDLA-V6-OEG4 were successfully synthesized. The obtained results of SC-PLA particle aggregation implied that the types of chain end and the molecular weight of polymer could influence the aggregation rate. The SC-V6-OEG4 blended with TiO2 could not make our target to aggregate under physiological conditions within 3 min. This study motivated us to control the particle aggregation rate under physiological conditions for applying as a target drug carrier which is significantly influenced by not only the molecular weight but also the hydrophilicity of the chain-end as well as the number of acetal bonds.journal articl
