Feasibility Study of Magnetism-based Indoor Positioning Methods in an Incineration Plant

    Get PDF
In an incineration plant, remote operation from a centralized control room is now possible, but inspection and cleaning of equipment still require a worker to visit the site. When the plant owner reduces the number of workers due to operation costs, it will be standard for a single worker to visit the site. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the location of workers in real-time to detect unexpected human accidents quickly. Conventional methods use radio waves, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but there is little demand for communication equipment in the incineration plant. However, there is not enough demand for communication facilities in the incineration plant. It is too large to bear the cost of installing wireless access points, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons just for positioning. Therefore, we are focusing on magnetism using for indoor positioning method. In addition, the incineration plant has a lot of types of equipment that contains a wide range of magnetized metals, large motors, and generators. We could observe the magnetic peculiarity at each point. Based on these assumptions, we have developed a new indoor positioning method at the incineration plant. This paper describes the development of an indoor positioning system for an incineration plant. And we propose three methods for fingerprinting matching: Point matching, Path matching, and DTW matching. The average positioning errors of these methods are 6.89 m, 0.05 m, and 0.06 m, respectively.conference pape

Multimodal Prediction of Social Responsiveness Score with BERT-Based Text Features

    No full text
Social Skills Training (SST) has been used for years to improve individuals' social skills toward building a better daily life. In SST carried out by humans, the social skills level is usually evaluated through a verbal interview conducted by the trainer. Although this evaluation is based on psychiatric knowledge and professional experience, its quality depends on the trainer's capabilities. Therefore, to standardize such evaluations, quantifiable metrics are required. To meet this need, the second edition of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS-2) offers a viable solution because it has been extensively tested and standardized by empirical research works. This paper describes the development of an automated method to evaluate a person's social skills level based on SRS-2. We use multimodal features, including BERT-based features, and perform score estimation with a 0.76 Pearson correlation coefficient while using feature selection. In addition, we examine the linguistic aspects of BERT-based features through subjective evaluations. Consequently, the BERT-based features show a strong negative correlation with human subjective scores of fluency, appropriate word choice, and understandable speech structure.journal articl

The Acceptability of Virtual Characters as Social Skills Trainers: Usability Study

    No full text
Background:Social skills training by human trainers is a well-established method to provide appropriate social interaction skills and strengthen social self-efficacy. In our previous work, we attempted to automate social skills training by developing a virtual agent that taught social skills through interaction. Previous research has not investigated the visual design of virtual agents for social skills training. Thus, we investigated the effect of virtual agent visual design on automated social skills training. Objective:The 3 main purposes of this research were to investigate the effect of virtual agent appearance on automated social skills training, the relationship between acceptability and other measures (eg, likeability, realism, and familiarity), and the relationship between likeability and individual user characteristics (eg, gender, age, and autistic traits). Methods:We prepared images and videos of a virtual agent, and 1218 crowdsourced workers rated the virtual agents through a questionnaire. In designing personalized virtual agents, we investigated the acceptability, likeability, and other impressions of the virtual agents and their relationship to individual characteristics. Results:We found that there were differences between the virtual agents in all measures (P<.001). A female anime-type virtual agent was rated as the most likeable. We also confirmed that participants’ gender, age, and autistic traits were related to their ratings. Conclusions:We confirmed the effect of virtual agent design on automated social skills training. Our findings are important in designing the appearance of an agent for use in personalized automated social skills training.journal articl

A simultaneous speech translation system translates while the speaker speaks and generates speech sequentially. To construct the system, an incremental Text-to-speech (iTTS) system which synthesizes a speech in a shorter synthesis unit is required. This work proposes a Japanese iTTS system for the simultaneous speech translation. Most of the researchers used the word unit as the synthesis unit. However, in Japanese speech synthesis, a unit called an accent phrase is important, and word-by-word synthesis may not be suitable. In this paper, we propose a linguistic feature and synthesis unit for Japanese iTTS. Experimental result shows that accent phrase or breath group are essential for a Japanese iTTS system as a trade-off between quality and synthesis units for the Japanese iTTS. Then, an accent phrase is a more appropriate incremental synthesis unit than a breath group through delay analysis.journal articl

Newcomer OSS-Candidates: Characterizing Contributions of Novice Developers to GitHub

    No full text
The ability of an Open Source Software (OSS) project to attract, onboard, and retain any newcomer is vital to its livelihood. Although, evidence suggests an upsurge in novice developers joining social coding platforms (such as GitHub), the extent to which their activities result in a OSS contribution is unknown. Henceforth, we execute the protocols of a registered report to study activities of a “Newcomer OSS-Candidate”, who is a novice developer that is new to that social coding platform, and has the intention to later onboard an OSS project. Using GitHub as a case platform, we analyze 171 identified Newcomer OSS-Candidates to characterize their contribution activities. Results show that Newcomer OSS-Candidates are likely to target software based repositories (i.e., 66%), and their first contributions are mainly associated with development (commits) and maintenance (PRs). Newcomer OSS-Candidates are less likely to practice social coding, but eventually end up onboarding (i.e., 30% quantitative, 70% follow-up survey) an OSS project. Furthermore, they cite finding a way to start as the most challenging barrier to contribute. Our work reveals insights on how newcomers to social coding platforms are potential sources of OSS contributions.journal articl

Between Fact and Fabrication: How Visual Art Might Nurture Environmental Consciousness

    No full text
Previous studies have highlighted the communicative limitations of artistic visualizations, which are often too conceptual or interpretive to enhance public understanding of (and volition to act upon) scientific climate information. This seems to suggest a need for greater factuality/concreteness in artistic visualization projects, which may indeed be the case. However, in this paper, we synthesize insights from environmental psychology, the psychology of art, and intermediate disciplines like eco-aesthetics, to argue that artworks?defined by their counterfactual qualities?can be effective for stimulating elements of environmental consciousness. We also argue that different artworks may yield different effects depending on how they combine counter/factual strategies. In so doing, we assert that effective artistic perceptualization?here expressed as affectivization?exceeds the faithful translation of facts from one mode to another, and cannot be encapsulated in a single example of un/successful art.journal articl

Eliminating Temporal Illumination Variations in Whisk-broom Hyperspectral Imaging

    No full text
We propose a method for eliminating the temporal illumination variations in whisk-broom (point-scan) hyperspectral imaging. Whisk-broom scanning is useful for acquiring a spatial measurement using a pixel-based hyperspectral sensor. However, when it is applied to outdoor cultural heritages, temporal illumination variations become an issue due to the lengthy measurement time. As a result, the incoming illumination spectra vary across the measured image locations because different locations are measured at different times. To overcome this problem, in addition to the standard raster scan, we propose an additional perpendicular scan that traverses the raster scan. We show that this additional scan allows us to infer the illumination variations over the raster scan. Furthermore, the sparse structure in the illumination spectrum is exploited to robustly eliminate these variations. We quantitatively show that a hyperspectral image captured under sunlight is indeed affected by temporal illumination variations, that a Naive mitigation method suffers from severe artifacts, and that the proposed method can robustly eliminate the illumination variations. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method by capturing historic stained-glass windows of a French cathedral.journal articl
