Monitoring Mentions of COVID-19 Vaccine Side Effects on Japanese and Indonesian Twitter: Infodemiological Study

    No full text
Background: The year 2021 was marked by vaccinations against COVID-19, which spurred wider discussion among the general population, with some in favor and some against vaccination. Twitter, a popular social media platform, was instrumental in providing information about the COVID-19 vaccine and has been effective in observing public reactions. We focused on tweets from Japan and Indonesia, 2 countries with a large Twitter-using population, where concerns about side effects were consistently stated as a strong reason for vaccine hesitancy. Objective: This study aimed to investigate how Twitter was used to report vaccine-related side effects and to compare the mentions of these side effects from 2 messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine types developed by Pfizer and Moderna, in Japan and Indonesia. Methods: We obtained tweet data from Twitter using Japanese and Indonesian keywords related to COVID-19 vaccines and their side effects from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021. We then removed users with a high frequency of tweets and merged the tweets from multiple users as a single sentence to focus on user-level analysis, resulting in a total of 214,165 users (Japan) and 12,289 users (Indonesia). Then, we filtered the data to select tweets mentioning Pfizer or Moderna only and removed tweets mentioning both. We compared the side effect counts to the public reports released by Pfizer and Moderna. Afterward, logistic regression models were used to compare the side effects for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for each country. Results: We observed some differences in the ratio of side effects between the public reports and tweets. Specifically, fever was mentioned much more frequently in tweets than would be expected based on the public reports. We also observed differences in side effects reported between Pfizer and Moderna vaccines from Japan and Indonesia, with more side effects reported for the Pfizer vaccine in Japanese tweets and more side effects with the Moderna vaccine reported in Indonesian tweets. Conclusions: We note the possible consequences of vaccine side effect surveillance on Twitter and information dissemination, in that fever appears to be over-represented. This could be due to fever possibly having a higher severity or measurability, and further implications are discussed.journal articl

Task-Relevant Encoding of Domain Knowledge in Dynamics Modeling: Application to Furnace Forecasting From Video

    No full text
Waste incineration plants are complex dynamical systems that rely on expert human operators to maintain steady combustion, by observing real-time in-chamber video feeds. Real-time plant forecasting provides vital operational support in decision making, and applying machine learning to automatically learn dynamics forecast models from video feeds is an attractive means to realise this. However, learning complex dynamics in systems that requires cost-efficiency remains an open research problem. Specifically, modelling plant dynamics in real-time is challenging due to uncertainties caused by inhomogeneous waste inputs, requiring complex learning that impedes real-time modelling. To address this, this paper presents a real-time data-driven framework for generating video forecasts, by incorporating task-relevant domain-knowledge , during learning. Specifically, this method combines dynamics modelling and forecasting using dynamic mode decomposition , with Fourier transformations informed by expert operator heuristic knowledge for encoding task-relevant frequency information inside the learning process. Experiments in this paper demonstrate that the proposed framework captures intuitive physical aspects of the underlying physiochemical process, with a greatly reduced computational runtime in comparison to standard approaches, allowing for application in real-time domains. Forecasted video predictions are accurate over short time horizons, and capture important system characteristics over longer time periods.journal articl

    Pavlovian-based neurofeedback enhances meta-awareness of mind-wandering

    No full text
Absorption in mind-wandering (MW) may worsen our mood and can cause psychological disorders. Researchers indicate the possibility that meta-awareness of MW prevents these mal-effects and enhances favorable consequences of MW, such as boosting creativity; thus, meta-awareness has attracted psychological and clinical attention. However, few studies have investigated the nature of meta-awareness of MW, because there has been no method to isolate and operate this ability. Therefore, we propose a new approach to manipulate the ability of meta-awareness. We used Pavlovian conditioning, tying to it an occurrence of MW and a neutral tone sound inducing the meta-awareness of MW. To perform paired presentations of the unconditioned stimulus (neutral tone) and the conditioned stimulus (perception accompanying MW), we detected participants’ natural occurrence of MW via electroencephalogram and a machine-learning estimation method. The double-blinded randomized controlled trial with 37 participants found that a single 20-min conditioning session significantly increased the meta-awareness of MW as assessed by behavioral and neuroscientific measures. The core protocol of the proposed method is real-time feedback on participants’ neural information, and in that sense, we can refer to it as neurofeedback. However, there are some differences from typical neurofeedback protocols, and we discuss them in this paper. Our novel classical conditioning is expected to contribute to future research on the modulation effect of meta-awareness on MW.journal articl

Scheduled simple production method of pseudopregnant female mice for embryo transfer using the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist

    No full text
The use of mice as experimental animal models has been a practice since the development of genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs) in the early 1980s. New technologies, including genome editing, have helped in the time- and cost-efficient generation of GEMMs. However, methods for preparing pseudopregnant females, essential for the generation of GEMMs, remain less advanced. This study proposes a new method to achieve simple production of pseudopregnant female mice using a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist (LHRHa). A 20 00B5gLHRHa/mousewasidentifiedasthebestdoseforinducingestrussynchronization.However,thefrequencyofcopulationwas4000B5g LHRHa/mouse was identified as the best dose for inducing estrus synchronization. However, the frequency of copulation was 40% on a single injection. With sequential injections of 20 00B5g LHRHa/mouse on Days-1 and -2, followed by pairing on Day-5, 74% of LHRHa-treated females copulated with male mice. Moreover, LHRHa treatment did not affect fetal and postnatal development. Eventually, successful generation of offspring via embryo transfer was attained using LHRHa-treated pseudopregnant females. LHRHa administration method is efficient in producing pseudopregnant female mice for the generation of GEMMs, and we expect that it will contribute towards advancing the clinical research.journal articl

Bottom-Up Synthesis of Multiply Fused PdII Anthriporphyrinoids

    No full text
Anthriporphyrinoid and its dimeric homologues were synthesized by Suzuki2013Miyauracouplingandsubsequentoxidation.BothporphyrinoidsweresmoothlyconvertedtotheirPdIIcomplexesandwerefurtherdecoratedbySuzuki2013Miyaura coupling and subsequent oxidation. Both porphyrinoids were smoothly converted to their PdII complexes and were further decorated by Suzuki2013Miyaura coupling with thiophene derivatives and subsequent oxidative fusion reaction to provide multiply fused compounds. Most PdII anthriporphyrinoids have been structurally well characterized to be planar for monomeric and helically twisted for dimeric species. The dimeric anthriporphyrinoids show paratropic ring currents due to their global antiaromatic networks, the extent of which increases with an increase of conjugated network. Multiply fused dimeric anthriporphyrinoids show helical structures, fully reversible six redox potentials, small HOMO$2013LUMO gaps, and absorption tails reaching in the near-infrared region, suggesting the high potential of this approach to explore molecular graphene. Optical separations of the dimeric helical species were accomplished, and racemization barrier heights were determined.journal articl

A 10,20-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)tetrabenzo-5,15-diazaporphine (TIPS-TBDAP) was synthesized by the metal-template aza-annulation reaction. TIPS-TBDAP showed intense far-red fluorescence at 723 nm with a fluorescence quantum yield of 31% in chloroform solution. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that TIPS-TBDAP forms a one-dimensional slipped D835D835DF0B-stacking structure in the single crystal state. TIPS-TBDAP is soluble in common organic solvents owing to the bulky substituents and solution-processed field-effect transistors (FETs) could be fabricated. Dip-coating and single-crystal FETs showed the maximum hole mobilities of 1.5× 1022123and0.16cm2V22123 and 0.16 cm2 V22121 s$22121, respectively.journal articl

The Effect of COVID-19 on the Transit System in Two Regions: Japan and USA

    Get PDF
The communication revolution that happened in the last ten years has increased the use of technology in the transportation world. Intelligent Transportation Systems wish to predict how many buses are needed in a transit system. With the pandemic effect that the world has faced since early 2020, it is essential to study the impact of the pandemic on the transit system. This paper proposes the leverage of Internet of Things (IoT) devices to predict the number of bus ridership before and during the pandemic. We compare the collected data from Kobe city, Hyogo, Japan, with data gathered from a college city in Virginia, USA. Our goal is to show the effect of the pandemic on ridership through the year 2020 in two different countries. The ultimate goal is to help transit system managers predict how many buses are needed if another pandemic hits.conference pape
