Molecular Design of Dual Redox-Active Phospholipid Polymers with a Potent Anticancer Activity
No full textRedox-active compounds that disrupt the intracellular redox balance are promising anticancer agents because of the vulnerability of cancer cells to oxidative stress. The conjugation of different redox-active molecules can effectively achieve high therapeutic efficacy but can also lead to challenges owing to their typically poor water solubility and complicated organic synthesis. In this study, we designed a water-soluble, cell-penetrating, dual redox-active polymer (pMBFcAq) containing ferrocene (Fc) and anthraquinone (Aq) units. pMBFcAq retained the redox activity originating from the Fc and Aq units and induced oxidative stress and cell death more strongly against mouse colon cancer CT26 cells than polymers containing either Aq or Fc units alone. The in vitro anticancer activity of pMBFcAq was enhanced by adjusting its composition. Moreover, pMBFcAq significantly suppressed the in vivo growth of CT26 tumors, indicating potent anticancer activity. A Behavioral Explanation for the Puzzling Persistence of the Aggregate Real Exchange Rate
Get PDFAt the aggregate level, the observation that deviations from purchasing power parity (PPP) are too persistent to be accounted for solely by nominal rigidities has long been a puzzle (Rogoff, 1996). In addition, microeconomic evidence suggests that deviations from the law of one price (LOP) are less persistent than PPP deviations. To reconcile these two empirical anomalies, we incorporate the behavioral inattention approach of Gabaix (2014) into a two-country sticky-price model. Our model shows that firms’ behavioral inattention to the aggregate component of real marginal costs generates an endogenous dependence of LOP deviations on PPP deviations. We find strong supporting evidence for this particular formulation of behavioral inattention. Calibrating our model with the estimated degree of attention, we show that our model can fully account for the two empirical anomalies. PPP deviations are more than twice as persistent as those implied by nominal rigidities alone, while the persistence of LOP deviations is about two-thirds that of PPP deviations.departmental bulletin pape

Mismatch repair deficiency and its relationship with histopathological features in gastric cancer patients
Get PDFGastric cancer is a common malignancy disease with a poor prognosis. Deficient mismatch repair is a prognostic and predictive marker of response to systemic therapies. However, deficient mismatch repair frequency and the relationship between this status and microscopic characteristics are inconsistent across nations. We aimed to determine the rate of deficient mismatch repair and its association with histopathological features in gastric cancer patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 226 gastric cancer patients treated at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Hue Central Hospital from June 2020 to January 2024. Mismatch repair protein expression was evaluated using immunohistochemical staining, and any absence of mismatch repair proteins was regarded as deficient mismatch repair. The deficient mismatch repair rate was 12.8%. Deficient mismatch repair appeared to be more frequent in the intestinal subtype of Lauren classification odds ratio (OR) = 4.767 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.086–20.921; p = 0.039), tubular/papillary adenocarcinoma (OR = 5.25; 95% CI, 1.185–23.251; p = 0.029), mucinous adenocarcinoma (OR = 6.19; 95% CI, 1.113–34.445; p = 0.037), and differentiated type (OR = 3.24; 95% CI, 1.324–7.931; p = 0.01). No statistically significant association was detected with histopathological features according to the Tumor Location-Modified Lauren classification and mucinous secreting morphology. Deficient mismatch repair status was unusual in gastric cancer. The degree of cell differentiation and microscopic characteristics based on the World Health Organization and Lauren classification could all impact the predictive power for microsatellite-instable status.departmental bulletin pape
Rifampicin-induced type 1 Kounis syndrome: a rare case
Get PDFKounis syndrome (KS) manifests as an acute coronary syndrome triggered by allergy, hypersensitivity, or anaphylaxis. It is believed that mast cells and histamine can potentially induce acute cardiac events by activating various inflammatory pathways. Here, we present a case of KS triggered by rifampicin administered during empyema drainage in a young male patient with no history of coronary artery disease. To the best of our knowledge, our case is the first report of rifampicin-induced KS documented in the literature. The wide range of etiological factors complicates the diagnosis of KS. Healthcare professionals should consider KS as a potential diagnosis in patients experiencing angina or similar pain alongside suspected allergic reactions.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFThis paper investigates the early formation of the “Taiwan Ensōkai,” the Taiwan branch of the “Ensō Haiku Association,” by examining the relationships between Japanese and Taiwanese haiku poets that were central to its establishment. Particular attention is given to Hada Gakusui and Shi Kōtō, alumni of the Taichū Normal School, whose post-war reunion is believed to have played a crucial role in the founding of the “Taiwan Ensōkai” by evoking memories of Japan’s colonial period in Taiwan. Pierre Nora’s concept of “sites of memory” (lieu de mémoire) is employed to analyze the significance of the Taichū Normal School and the “Ensō Haiku Association” led by Hada Gakusui. Additionally, this paper examines how the exchanges between Japanese and Taiwanese haiku circles, or poets, are reflected in the writings and haiku of Hada Gakusui and Shi Kōtō, both of whom harbored nostalgic sentiments for Taiwan. Many participants in the “Ensō Haiku Association,” including Hada Gakusui, had deep connections to Taiwan and left behind numerous writings capturing a diverse range of memories related to Taiwan, which may explain the decision to establish a branch of the Ensōkai in Taiwan after the war. In short, this paper aims to analyze the relationship between Hada Gakusui and Shi Kōtō by examining the “sites of memory” at Taichū Normal School and the “Ensō Haiku Association” to elucidate the formation of the “Taiwan Ensōkai”.departmental bulletin pape
