    星座名エン・ゴナシン : 複数形γόνασιν が使われていることの意味

    Get PDF
Engonasin (Ἐνγόνασιν) is the name of an ancient constellation which corresponds to the constellation of Hercules. The name Engonasin, which is usually translated as ‘Kneeler’, is composed of the preposition ‘ἐν’ and the plural form of a neuter noun ‘γόνυ’ (knee). This name suggests a posture using both knees, while the constellation of Hercules is now generally envisaged in the image of the hero sitting on one knee. Thus the name Engonasin does not seem to match the common image of the constellation. This paper focuses on the phrase ‘ἐν γόνασιν’ and examines this supposed contradiction. The phrase ‘ἐν γόνασιν’ depicting sitting postures is found in the works of Herodotus, Aratus, Pausanias, Diodorus and Justinus, wherein it is even applied to a bull statue lying in a prone position (Herodotus.2.132). This implies that the phrase does not depict a specific posture, while it always assumes the posture ‘with bent knees’. The phrase ‘ἐν γόνασιν’ can be applied to the posture of sitting on one knee. Therefore, the ancient name ‘Engonasin’ does not contradict the shape of the constellation of Hercules.departmental bulletin pape

Murder on Milk Street: News of Youth Crime in Seventeenth-Century London

    Get PDF
This study argues that in order to comprehend the nature of the relationship between youth, crime and the media, it is important to have an adequate understanding not only of the present but also of the past. Accordingly, this study presents an analysis of two early modern British news pamphlets that report on a particular case of youth crime in which a young apprentice murdered a fellow apprentice and stole a large sum of money from the latter’s master. Through this analysis I attempt to show how the news media do not simply “report the facts” but actively construct their representations of the people, circumstances and events related to the crimes in ways which reflect political, social and, above all in this case, religious ideologies.departmental bulletin pape

Two types of volcanic rocks in the Bombookhoi Formation, South Gobi Province, Mongolia: A preliminarily report

    Get PDF
The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is the core geologic unit to understand the tectonic history of Eurasian continent. Although the Mesozoic volcanic rocks in the South Mongolia are the key factor in revealing the later stage of the CAOB formation, very few attempt on its geochemistry have been made. This study gives the basic geochemical information of the volcanic rocks of the Bombookhoi Formation, which has been assigned to the “Upper Cretaceous,” of the South Mongolia, and discusses its tectonic setting. The volcanic rocks of the study area are divided into the tholeiitic basalt (SiO2: 46–49 wt%, FeO*/MgO: 6.0–9.0, Mg#: 17–23) and calc-alkaline andesite (SiO2: 54–57 wt%, FeO*/MgO: 1.6–2.6, Mg#: 40–52). Although the both has a signature of volcanic arc environment such as distinctive Nb negative anomaly in the MORB-normalized multi-element concentration diagram, these has probably been derived from the different sources of magma each other judging from FeO*/MgO ratio, Mg#, and others. It is considered that, by the Jurassic, the South Mongolia block and Siberian craton/North China block had already been amalgamated each other to complete the core part of the “East Asia,” and neither oceanic plate subduction nor arc volcanism is assumed to have occurred in the South Mongolia at the Late Cretaceous. Therefore, age-confirmation of this formation, such as by isotopic dating and others, should be required further. Then, if the volcanic rocks of the Bombookhoi Formation are truly Upper Cretaceous, re-consideration for the basic tectonic scheme around the South Mongolia block at Late Cretaceous will be needed.departmental bulletin pape
