Unmet need for contraception among married women 
in the Kyrgyz Republic using the datasets from the

【Introduction】  
Since the beginning of the family program in 1998, the proportion of married women 
who used contraception has fluctuated. An unmet need for contraception among women 
in Kyrgyzstan drastically increased from 2006 (1.1%) to 2014 (19.1%), and remained 
unchanged until 2018 (19.0%). This study aims to re-investigate the prevalence of an 
unmet need for contraception from 2006 to 2018 in a comprehensive manner, and 
examine the factors associated with an unmet need for contraception among married 
women over the course of 12 years in the Kyrgyz Republic. 
 
【Methods】 
This study employed a cross-sectional design utilizing secondary data from the 
Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) conducted in 2006, 2014, and 2018. The 
surveys were nationally representative and included married women aged 15–49 years. 
All women aged 15–49 years old who were currently married and in-union, and fecund 
were included in this study. Women did not use contraception and did not answer on the 
duration of waiting time for the next child were excluded. Infecund women were as 
follows, women who answered ‘cannot get pregnant,’ were postmenopausal, had a 
hysterectomy, had never menstruated, did not use any contraception but did not have 
childbirth in the five years preceding the survey, and women who answered ‘last 
menstruation was before the last pregnancy but last pregnancy was five years prior to 
the survey.’ A total of 9,229 women were included in this study (Fig. 1).  
The primary outcome variable was an unmet need for contraception, defined as women 
who wished to delay or limit childbirth but were not using any contraceptive method. 
Independent variables included sociodemographic factors such as age, education, place 
of residence, household wealth, and number of children. Statistical analyses, including 
logistic regression, were conducted using SPSS to assess associations between unmet 
need for contraception and the independent variables. A p-value of <0.05 was considered 
statistically significant. 
 
【Results】 
Of the 9,229 women, most women were 25–34 years old (44.3%), had high school education 
(51.2%), lived in rural areas (63.6%), and the mother tongue of the household head was Kyrgyz 
(68.8%) (Table 1). Most women had husbands/partners aged 25–34 years old (44.5%), had 
three children or more, and had a met need for contraception (79.2%) (Table 2). The prevalence 
of an unmet need for contraception increased from 19.9% in 2006 to 20.4% in 2014 and 
22.5% in 2018. Over the 12-year period, there was a steady decline in the use of modern 
contraceptive methods, including intrauterine devices (IUDs), oral contraceptive pills, 
and injections (Fig. 2). The usage of IUDs, which was the most used contraceptive

method, decreased from 40.5% in 2006 to 25.8% in 2018. The proportion of women 
using no contraceptive methods increased from 34.2% in 2006 to 42.4% in 2018. 
Across three survey years, factors significantly associated with an unmet need for 
contraception included age of women, area of residence, mother tongue of household 
head, age of husband, and number of children ever born (Table 3). Women whose age 
were 25–34 years, 35–44 years, and 45–49 years were consistently significantly less 
likely to have unmet need for contraception. After combining the three survey years 
together, women whom aged 25–34 years old (AOR = 0.60, 95%CI 0.51–0.71, P < 0.001), 
aged 35–44 years old (AOR = 0.36, 95%CI 0.28–0.46, P < 0.001), aged 45–49 years old 
(AOR = 0.22, 95%CI 0.15–0.33, P < 0.001) were less likely to have unmet need for 
contraception compared to women’s age 15–24 years old. While women whose head of 
household spoke Russian as their mother tongue shows consistent significant association 
with less unmet need for contraception from 2006 to 2018, women whose head of 
household spoke Uzbek shows significant association only in 2006 and 2018. When combining 
all three survey years, women whose head of household spoke Russian (AOR = 0.62, 95%CI 
0.49–0.79, P < 0.001), and Uzbek ethnic (AOR = 0.70, 95%CI 0.59–0.82, P < 0.001) were 
significantly less likely to have unmet need compared to women whose household head spoke 
Kyrgyz. Additionally, number of children ever born did not only show consistent significant 
association with more unmet need for contraception, but the odds ratio also increased 
drastically in 2014 and 2018 compared to those in 2006. When combining the three survey 
years together, women who had one child (AOR = 3.87, 95% CI 2.87–5.22, P < 0.001), two 
children (AOR = 4.84, 95% CI 3.57–6.55, P < 0.001), and three children or more (AOR = 7.43, 
95% CI 5.43–10.17, P < 0.001) were more likely to have unmet need for contraception 
compared to women who had no children.  
 
【Discussion】 
The increase in the unmet need for contraception in Kyrgyzstan over the 12-year period 
suggests ongoing challenges in family planning services. One possible explanation is the 
inconsistent availability of contraceptive supplies, which are largely dependent on donations 
and humanitarian aid. Stock shortages may limit women’s ability to access their preferred 
contraceptive methods, leading to higher rates of non-use. Strengthening the contraceptive 
supply chain is crucial to ensure consistent access to a range of methods. 
The decline in IUD usage, despite being a highly effective and cost-efficient contraceptive 
method, is concerning. This decline may be attributed to healthcare providers’ reluctance to 
offer IUD services due to insufficient training and confidence. Regular professional 
development and supportive supervision for healthcare providers can improve their ability to 
offer a range of contraceptive options, including IUDs. 
The higher unmet need among younger women highlights the importance of youth-friendly

reproductive health services. Many young women in Kyrgyzstan may have limited access to 
accurate sexual health information and face social barriers in obtaining contraception. 
Expanding comprehensive sexual education programs and improving access to confidential 
and affordable reproductive health services for young people can help address this issue. 
Similarly, the strong association between unmet need and having multiple children suggests 
that postpartum women may not be receiving adequate contraceptive counseling and services. 
Strengthening family planning services at primary healthcare facilities, particularly for 
postpartum women, can help bridge this gap. 
 
【Conclusions】 
The unmet need for contraception among married Kyrgyz women slightly increased, 
and the trend of modern contraceptive usage declined from 2006 to 2018, particularly 
the use of pills, injections, and intra-uterine devices. Comprehensive sexual health 
education for young people and youth-friendly services should be promoted. An 
effective and reliable supply chain of contraceptive commodities should be prioritized 
and strengthened. Regular supportive supervision visits are essential to improve the 
knowledge and skills of healthcare providers to be able to provide intrauterine device 
service as a contraceptive choice for Kyrgyz women.

【Introduction】 
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) extends throughout a cell, essential for cellular 
homeostasis. In neurons, rough ER sheets, known as Nissl bodies, are active protein 
synthesis units, while peripheral ER tubules form a branching network. ER network 
interacts with plasma membrane (PM) through ER-PM contact sites, mediated by 
tethering proteins like extended-synaptotagmins (E-Syts). ER stress conditions, like 
axonal injury, disrupt ER homeostasis and trigger adaptive reactions. Although some 
studies examined axonal ER after axotomy, ER in somata remains poorly understood 
due to its complex structures. Here, focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy 
(FIB/SEM) is used to visualize the ER 3D ultrastructure and its precise somatic 
localization. FIB/SEM also enables the identification of ER-PM contacts as plate-like 
structures and analyzes surface areas. Furthermore, ER-PM contacts alterations post-
injury led us to assess E-Syts expression and their localization using immunohistochemistry 
(IHC) and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). 
 
【Materials and Methods】 
Adult C57BL/6 mice underwent right hypoglossal nerve transection under anesthesia. Brain 
tissues were collected post-injury. FIB/SEM showed 3D reconstruction of ER morphology and 
ER-PM contacts using Amira software. E-Syt expression was assessed via IHC and qRT-PCR. 
 
【Result】 
In hypoglossal motor neurons under control conditions, FIB/SEM revealed distinct lamellar 
ER stacks concentrated around the nucleus, with sparser ER structures near the PM. These 
sheet-like regions are likely Nissl bodies, areas of rough ER involved in protein synthesis. 
Following axonal injury, this perinuclear organization was disrupted, the lamellar ER collapsed, 
and became a more tubular, mesh-like structure with increased branching. The ER distribution 
became more uniform throughout the cytoplasm. ER morphological changes were confirmed 
by quantitative analysis. In control neurons, ER volume was approximately 30% greater in the 
perinuclear region compared to the periphery. However, this spatial polarity was lost after 
injury, and no significant difference in ER volume was observed between regions. Concurrently, 
the number of ER branching points, a marker of tubular transformation, within a unit volume 
(1 µm³) was plotted to compare control and injured neurons. ER branching number was 
markedly increased, from 8.7 to 14.3/1 µm3 in the perinuclear area and from 10.3 to 20.3/1 
µm3 in the periphery, indicating a shift toward a branched, tubular ER structure in response to 
nerve injury. 
These alterations also affect ER–PM interactions. FIB/SEM 3D ultrastructural analysis 
revealed a shift of ER toward the periphery and an increase in tubular ER density near the PM, 
with some segments appearing to contact the PM. These contacts appeared as plate-like

structures of varying shapes and sizes in reconstructed 3D images. Quantitative analysis 
revealed that ER-PM contacts expanded significantly after injury, covering 7.0 ± 0.9% of the 
PM compared to 3.2 ± 1.4% in controls. To support the morphological observations following 
injury, we analyzed the expression of E-Syt1, a key tethering protein at ER-PM junctions, in 
the somata of motor neurons. IHC showed weak expression in control neurons, while injured 
neurons exhibited strong expression of E-Syt1 accumulation along the PM. This expression 
appeared by day 3 post-injury, peaked at day 7, and gradually declined. qRT-PCR analysis 
confirmed that Esyt1 mRNA was significantly upregulated following injury. 
 
【Discussion】 
The current study used FIB/SEM to show 3D reconstruction of the organelles, we identified 
key morphological changes in the ER of motor neurons following axotomy, including the 
transformation of ER sheets into a more uniformly distributed, mesh-like network and a 
significant increase in ER-PM contact sites, accompanied by a spatiotemporal changes of the 
E-Syt1 along the plasma membrane. Axotomy is known to downregulate neurotransmission-
related proteins while activating stress-response pathways, and the observed transition from 
lamellar to tubular ER may promote the release of free ribosomes and enhance the synthesis 
of proteins involved in repair. Some literature has reported a connection between tubular ER 
morphology and intracellular trafficking and inter-organelle communication processes, which 
is crucial for neuronal regeneration. These morphological alterations are consistent with ER 
stress and the activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR), both of which are commonly 
triggered by axonal damage and contribute to regenerative signaling. ER-PM contact sites are 
dynamic structures that respond to cellular stress, and our analysis revealed a nearly twofold 
increase in their surface area after injury, likely reflecting the reported adaptive response to 
calcium imbalance. E-Syt1, which contains calcium-sensitive C2 domains and a lipid-transfer 
SMP domain, was significantly upregulated and redistributed along the PM following injury. 
E-Syts regulation of the ER-PM contact might mediate PM organisation, leading to repair in 
our injury model. Similar to tricalbins in yeast, E-Syt1 may facilitate phospholipid transfer 
under stress conditions, aiding neuronal recovery. Since ER-PM contacts are also key regions 
for store-operated calcium entry, their expansion could support calcium homeostasis by 
replenishing ER calcium stores after depletion caused by injury. 
The concurrent remodeling of ER structure and expansion of ER-PM contacts suggests a 
coordinated response to injury. Actin-binding protein filamin, a regulator of ER structure, and 
protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase, an ER stress sensor, have been shown to interact and 
modulate ER-PM contacts through E-Syt1-mediated tethering. Additionally, studies report that 
disruption of ER-PM contacts can lead to secondary changes in ER morphology and UPR 
activation. In C. elegans, mutations in ER-shaping proteins not only alter ER structure but also 
mislocalize E-Syt and suppress axonal regeneration. Together with our findings, these data

support the idea that ER tubulation and the expansion of the ER-PM contacts act in 
concordance to restore neuronal homeostasis and promote recovery after axonal injury. 
 
【Conclusion】 
Our study showed that axotomy induces ER remodeling and increased ER-PM contacts in 
motor neurons, likely E-Syt1 dependent. Tubular ER structures and expanded contacts may 
support calcium homeostasis and stress responses. While the role of lipid transfer remains 
uncertain, these changes appear essential for maintaining neuronal integrity and promoting 
regeneration after injury.

Autonomous driving technologies are becoming increasingly widespread as both 
vehicle configurations and usage scenarios continue to diversify. This trend calls for 
control methods that can address diverse requirements by effectively utilizing a 
vehicle's full capabilities. Among the technological advancements leading this 
diversification, the increase in operational degrees of freedom (DoF)—the number of 
independently controllable axes—has had a particularly direct impact on motion 
capabilities. While conventional four-wheeled vehicles typically possess 2 DoF, advances 
in in-wheel motor systems have enabled the practical realization of 5 DoF vehicles with 
enhanced cornering performance and even Four-Wheel Independent Drive and Steering 
(4WIDS) systems, which possess 8 DoF. Such high DoF configurations enable flexible 
motion, including not only in-place rotation but also omnidirectional translation, 
thereby making them particularly suitable for navigating in narrow and cluttered 
environments. However, the inherent redundancy in available motion patterns for a 
given objective constitutes a fundamental control challenge, in which control algorithms 
must select an optimal pattern from among multiple feasible options to make full use of 
the vehicle's capabilities.

This dissertation investigates how autonomous driving control strategies can be 
designed to fully exploit the performance potential of these diversifying mobility 
systems. Through a comprehensive review of existing methods, Model Predictive 
Control (MPC) emerges as the most suitable approach. MPC is particularly well-suited 
for this purpose because it offers broad applicability across diverse systems and enables 
the explicit handling of state and input constraints, which is essential for safety in 
mobility applications. Nonetheless, to enable practical deployment of MPC across 
diverse mobility platforms, two core components require further enhancement: 
prediction and optimization. 
On the prediction side, this study explores how practical prediction models can be 
designed. It is suggested that using an overly complex prediction model in MPC is 
undesirable, as it not only increases the computational difficulty of the optimization but 
also necessitates the identification of numerous physical parameters. Consequently, this 
study advocates the rational simplification of vehicle models by incorporating physical 
characteristics relevant to the target task. A comparative study of prediction models for 
path-tracking control reveals that employing the most detailed model is not always the 
best choice. In low-speed driving scenarios, for instance, it was found that simpler 
kinematic models such as Kinematic Ackermann Model (KAM) and Kinematic Bicycle 
Model (KBM) that neglect tire slip effects can achieve better path-tracking performance 
compared to more complex Dynamic Bicycle Model (DBM). This finding underscores the 
importance of selecting a model whose complexity is appropriate for the operational 
context. Furthermore, this study proposes Dynamic Bicycle Model improved in 
Low-speed range (DBM-L) to address a key limitation of the conventional DBM. The 
conventional DBM becomes inapplicable when the vehicle speed approaches zero due to 
a singularity in its formulation. By replacing the problematic mathematical term with a 
soft normalization function, DBM-L successfully enables stable path tracking from a 
standstill. This capability is not possible with the conventional DBM and significantly 
extends the model's practical applicability across a wide range of driving speeds. 
On the optimization side, this study examines how the handling of multiple tasks can 
be enhanced. The conventional approach involves scalarizing multiple task-related 
objectives into a weighted sum within a single cost function. As a comparative baseline, 
this study implements a sampling-based model predictive control method—Model 
Predictive Path-Integral (MPPI) Control—for an 8 DoF vehicle navigation task. The 
initial implementation revealed that the choice of sampling space significantly affects 
navigation performance. This led to the development of a hybrid controller, MPPI-H, 
which dynamically switches between sampling spaces to balance efficiency and safety.

Despite this improvement, the fundamental limitations of the weighted-scalarization 
approach persist in that tuning the weights becomes increasingly challenging as the 
number of objectives grows, and there remains a risk that the optimization process may 
sacrifice higher-priority tasks for the sake of lower-priority ones. 
To address these limitations, this study proposes a hierarchical decomposition strategy 
that explicitly considers task priorities for multi-objective control. This approach 
reduces the need for extensive weight tuning when balancing competing objectives. The 
strategy is implemented through a novel optimization framework called 
Sampling-Augmented Hierarchical Quadratic Programming (SA-HQP), along with its 
receding-horizon extension, Nullspace MPC. The proposed framework extends 
Hierarchical Quadratic Programming (HQP), a method that solves prioritized linear 
tasks by constraining lower-priority solutions to lie within the nullspace of all 
higher-priority task constraints. This formulation ensures that critical objectives are 
preserved without compromise. The principal contribution of SA-HQP lies in its ability 
to incorporate essential nonlinear tasks, such as collision avoidance with arbitrarily 
shaped obstacles, which cannot be handled by standard HQP. This is achieved by 
converting such tasks into locally linear tasks that are parameterized by intermediate 
"via-poses" through which the vehicle must pass. A sampling-based optimizer explores 
the low-dimensional space of these via-poses in order to find a globally consistent 
solution that satisfies the original nonlinear constraints. 
The navigation performance of the proposed Nullspace MPC was evaluated through 
comparative experiments using an 8 DoF vehicle, with the highly capable MPPI-H 
controller serving as a benchmark. Nullspace MPC achieved superior performance 
across key metrics, including trajectory length, episode time, and success rate. While 
the baseline controller often exhibits a sequential behavior in which the vehicle rotates 
in place before moving forward, Nullspace MPC adopts a concurrent behavior. It 
advances the vehicle along the reference path while continuously adjusting its 
orientation, resulting in smoother trajectories and improved clearance behavior. This 
ability to exploit the system's capability enables more effective navigation in 
environments with geometric complexity. 
In conclusion, this dissertation investigates how autonomous driving control can be 
realized to fully exploit the performance potential of diversifying mobility systems, with 
a focus on improving both the prediction and optimization aspects of Model Predictive 
Control (MPC). On the prediction side, it was shown that increased model complexity 
does not necessarily lead to improved performance, underscoring the importance of 
model simplification based on task-specific requirements. In addition, a novel prediction

model was proposed to extend the applicability of dynamic models to low-speed 
scenarios. On the optimization side, Nullspace MPC is introduced as a framework that 
decomposes the control problem by task priority. Experimental results demonstrated 
that this approach enables more efficient navigation in constrained environments, while 
also providing a tractable formulation for multi-objective control. Together, these 
contributions advance the use of MPC for diverse mobility platforms by enabling more 
practical model selection and more efficient operation.

Humanity must transition to environmentally friendly power sources, such as 
batteries, hydrogen, ammonia, and bioethanol, for future automotive propulsion. 
However, concerns exist regarding potential corrosion when they are used in engines. 
The corrosion processes may cause localized degradation, compromise structural 
integrity, and accelerate wear on component surfaces. Addressing these challenges 
requires advanced surface engineering solutions capable of simultaneously maintaining 
low friction, wear, and corrosion resistance in aggressive chemical environments.  
Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings have emerged as valuable surface 
engineering solutions due to their exceptional mechanical durability and self-lubricating 
characteristics. The tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) structures, characterized by 
predominant sp³ hybridization, exhibit superior hardness values. Combining mechanical 
strength, tribological properties, and chemical stability of ta-C coating is increasingly

critical for advanced engineering applications. However, the ta-C coating showed an 
obvious breakdown current phenomenon in the polarization corrosion test, and the 
corroded surface showed many penetration holes. The formation of penetration holes 
will cause local galvanic corrosion and aggravate the failure of the substrate material. 
This study aims to achieve uniform and low corrosion reaction while preserving 
mechanical strength and lubrication properties, and to avoid localized through-hole 
corrosion that accelerates failure of the ta-C coatings. Based on the excellent 
tribological properties of ta-C coatings demonstrated in previous studies, this thesis 
focuses on using elemental doping to reduce the high internal stress inherent in pure 
ta-C coatings, thereby enhancing their electrochemical stability and enabling 
comprehensive performance in corrosive tribological environments. In this study, we 
selected tantalum (Ta) as the target doping element. A notable property advantage of 
tantalum-containing coatings is their multifunctional performance: they alleviate the 
internal stress of pure carbon coatings, stabilize the carbon network against oxidative 
degradation, and form passive tantalum oxide layers that enhance chemical stability in 
corrosive environments. Furthermore, the tantalum-containing coatings maintain a low 
and stable friction behavior. Therefore, it might be worth considering 
tantalum-containing ta-C coatings (ta-C: Ta) in corrosive environments and maximizing 
comprehensive performance through macro-scale (layer number, thickness) and 
micro-scale (microstructure) control strategies. Given the difficulty and expense of 
replicating diverse industrial corrosive environments in this study, 3.5 wt% NaCl serves 
as an appropriate representative testing medium due to its strong penetrating capabilities 
and ability to simulate electrochemical attack mechanisms found in various corrosive 
conditions.

Compared to ta-C coatings, single-layer tantalum-doped coatings show fewer 
through-hole defects, resulting in more uniform corrosion. However, tantalum addition 
reduces the mechanical strength of ta-C coatings, and the decreased hardness accelerates 
wear. To prevent through-hole defect formation and enhance mechanical support, it is 
worth considering a multilayer coating design incorporating an anticorrosion top layer, 
an interface formation that prevents through-hole defect penetration, and a 
high-hardness bottom layer. We designed a multilayer coating with ta-C as the bottom 
layer and ta-C: Ta as the top layer. This design provides uniform corrosion resistance 
through the ta-C: Ta layer, prevents penetrating corrosion defects with interface 
formation between the ta-C and ta-C: Ta layers, and enhances the mechanical support of 
the coating through the bottom ta-C layer. The single ta-C: Ta coating, ta-C/ta-C: Ta 
coatings with a total layer number of 2 and 4 were deposited using filtered cathodic 
vacuum arc (FCVA) deposition equipment. Then, the layer numbers effect on the 
corrosion, friction, and wear properties of the coatings was investigated, and the specific 
carbon bonding structure mechanism on the corrosion, friction, and wear was also 
clarified.  
Compared to single-layer coating, both multilayer (total layer numbers of 2 and 4) 
coatings display a reduced corrosion defect depth and prevent through-hole defect 
formation. However, the 4-layer coating develops large amounts of graphitized 
nanocrystalline structures in the ta-C: Ta layer and a distinctly graphitized interface 
formed between the top ta-C: Ta layer and the underlying ta-C layer, which leads to 
large amounts of corrosion defects, increases corrosion current, and decreases corrosion 
resistance. In the 2-layer coating, non-graphitic nanocrystals form in the ta-C: Ta layer, 
which is a key factor in reducing the overall corrosion current, increasing the corrosion

resistance, and exhibiting higher hardness and wear resistance than single-layer and 
4-layer coatings. Therefore, concluding from the results for the 2-layer coating, the top 
ta-C: Ta layer maintains uniform corrosion properties of the tantalum-doped coating, 
while the formation of non-graphitized nanocrystals further reduces the corrosion 
current. The interface between ta-C: Ta and ta-C layers reduces the propagation of 
corrosion defect sites. Meanwhile, the hard bottom ta-C layer can also provide effective 
mechanical support, improving deformation and wear resistance.  
Next, based on the above-designed 2-layer coating (comprising a ta-C bottom layer 
followed by a Ta-containing top layer), we intended to design thicker coatings that 
provide superior protection performance, as they increase coating resistance, reduce 
electron transfer efficiency, and extend the penetration path of corrosive ions in 
corrosion reactions. Additionally, thick coatings can effectively adjust the stress and 
mechanical strength of the coating, minimizing localized wear during the sliding 
process. Besides, given a fixed total thickness, another issue is to optimize the thickness 
ratio between the ta-C layer and ta-C: Ta layer to ensure adequate hardness support 
while maintaining sufficient surface layer thickness for excellent corrosion resistance. 
To achieve superior corrosion and wear resistance with a thicker total thickness, enough 
ta-C: Ta and ta-C layer thickness, we controlled the total deposition time for ta-C and 
ta-C: Ta layers to get the 2-layer coating with the total thickness of 300, 600, 1000 nm, 
and the layer thickness ratio (between ta-C and ta-C: Ta layer) of 1:0.5, 1:1, and 1:2. 
The effects of coating thickness and layer thickness ratio on the tribological properties 
of the coatings were investigated, and the tantalum oxide protection mechanism was 
elucidated. All coatings with varying thickness and layer thickness ratios exhibited 
stable friction during the sliding process. Increased coating thickness effectively

reduced the friction coefficient, which was attributed to the higher sp²/sp³ ratio on the 
coating’s wear scar and the formation of carbon transfer film on the counterpart ball. 
However, the increase in total thickness reduces the wear resistance of the coating. With 
the total thickness of the coating increasing from 300 nm to 1000 nm, the density of 
corrosion defects at the wear scar of the coating increases and is positively correlated 
with the wear amount, so corrosive wear becomes the main wear mechanism. Chemical 
composition analysis of the wear scar in the coating reveals that the coating with a total 
thickness of 300 nm forms significantly higher tantalum-oxygen (Ta-O) bonds at the 
wear interface than the 1000 nm coating, which is the key factor determining the 
corrosion resistance of the wear scar. Similarly, for 1000 nm coatings (while 
maintaining overall hardness stability), increasing the ta-C: Ta layer thickness increases 
the proportion of tantalum oxide on the surface, enhancing corrosion resistance and 
reducing overall corrosive wear. Therefore, based on the experimental results presented 
above, we can conclude that the traditional assumption of thicker coatings providing 
superior corrosion protection is challenged. The 300 nm coating outperforms the 1000 
nm coating because its reduced thickness leads to more significant frictional heat 
formation and accumulation, which greatly promotes Ta-O bond formation at wear 
surfaces and results in optimal corrosive-wear performance. For 1000 nm coatings, 
increasing the top ta-C: Ta layer thickness promotes better tantalum dispersion, 
enhances tantalum reactivity, and improves Ta-O bonding at the wear scar.  
Finally, the key challenge for achieving excellent performance in 2-layer thin 
coatings is maximizing protective effectiveness within thickness constraints. This 
requires establishing dual corrosion protection mechanisms throughout the coating 
depth (from surface to substrate) while optimizing the mechanical properties of the ta-C:

Ta top layer to ensure mechanical stability and maintain continuous chemical protection. 
To achieve enhanced coating performance throughout the entire thickness, it is worth 
considering the precise control of the microstructure throughout the coating 
cross-section (including bonding types and crystal plane orientations). We control ion 
deposition energy by adjusting the deposition bias voltage (from -75 V to -175 V), 
thereby regulating the microscopic bonding structure across the coating thickness. This 
section investigates the application of 2-layer coatings (ta-C bottom layer followed by a 
ta-C: Ta top layer, with a thickness of 300 nm) in corrosive environments, focusing on 
how the applied bias voltage affects the cross-section microstructure, corrosion 
resistance, friction behavior, and wear properties. Our analysis examines the corrosion 
resistance, mechanical strength, and wear resistance mechanism based on the 
microstructural features (specifically tantalum carbide nanocrystals and graphite 
structure). Analyzing the microstructural results, we can conclude that an optimal value 
of -125 V enables the preferential growth of TaC (111) nanocrystal domains embedded 
in a dense amorphous carbon matrix. The preferential growth of TaC (111) nanocrystals, 
with its stronger bonding strength and higher surface cleavage energy, shows the best 
chemical stability and mechanical strength. Bias voltage of -175 V induces carbon 
network reorganization toward the graphite structure, promotes the penetration of 
corrosive ions, leads to decreased mechanical strength, and the highest wear rate.  
Therefore, element doping effectively reduces the density of localized penetrating 
corrosion defects in pure ta-C coatings, achieving more uniform corrosion behavior. 
Among these doping elements, tantalum has become the focus of this study due to both 
its excellent corrosion resistance properties and the limited related research. Maximum

protection performance of tantalum-doped ta-C coatings is achieved through dual 
control strategies: macro-scale optimization of coating layer number and total thickness, 
combined with micro-scale control of microstructure throughout the coating 
cross-section. The optimal coating design features a 2-layer structure (top ta-C: Ta layer 
with bottom ta-C layer) with a total thickness of 300 nm and a deposition bias of -125 V, 
which maximizes comprehensive performance. Furthermore, the specific regulatory 
mechanisms are concluded as follows: 1. While ensuring uniform corrosion with Top 
ta-C: Ta layer, the interface formed between the ta-C and ta-C: Ta layers in the 2-layer 
coating increases resistance to corrosion propagation in depth, thereby suppressing the 
formation of penetrating corrosion defects that occur in a single-layer coating. 2. 
Compared to thick coatings with 1000 nm thickness, reducing the total thickness to 300 
nm generates more frictional heat during the friction process, promoting oxide 
formation on the wear scar and enhancing the overall corrosion-wear resistance of the 
coating. 3. Adjusting the deposition bias to -125 V promotes the formation of TaC (111) 
crystal planes in the ta-C: Ta layer. Its stronger bonding strength and higher surface 
cleavage energy show the best chemical stability and mechanical strength, thereby 
achieving improved comprehensive performance within the limited thickness constraint.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), a food security crop in Africa, is grown throughout the 
tropics and subtropics. The development of a new cassava variety requires several years to 
achieve, and alternative strategies that can be promptly adopted to resolve these challenges, 
such as grafting, should be considered. In chapter I, we evaluated the effect of grafting on 
yield and starch content of cassava utilizing eight cassava genotypes: 1) Pole Bankye (PB); 2) 
CRI-Ampong (CA); 3) CRI-AGRA Bankye (CAB); 4) CRI-Dudzi (CD); 5) CRI-Duade Kpakpa 
(CDK); 6) CRI-Bankye Hemaa (CBH); 7) CRI-Essam Bankye (CEB), and 8) CRI-Sika Bankye 
(CSB). The top-wedge grafting method was used to generate a total of eight self-graft 
combinations, seven heterografts with Pole Bankye (PB) as scion, and seven heterografts 
with Pole Bankye (PB) as rootstock, and also eight ungrafted treatments. The results showed 
that grafting significantly influenced the agronomic traits in cassava plants, including yield 
and starch content. The results showed a 24% to 91% increase in starch content, 8% to 70% 
increase in fresh tuber yield, and 9% to 49% increase in the number of tubers. The study 
demonstrated that grafting improved the fresh root yield and starch content in cassava. 
Therefore, grafting of genotypes with significant traits such as high photosynthetic rates and 
growth rate can induce increased yield and starch content in cassava. The combined 
phenotype–based module–trait correlations revealed modules associated with starch content, 
and we identified potential biomarkers for cassava improvement, including UBC2, HP20, 
EXPA15, SDH6, GSH1, ES25W, and CNIH4. This study, despite the high diversity and 
complexity of the dataset, provides a suitable foundation for future studies to better 
understand graft–induced agronomic improvement in cassava. 
 Grafting technique has been widely used to improve resistance to biotic and abiotic 
stresses, increase yields, fruit quality in plants. However, the technique has not been fully

explored in cassava, and there is currently no standardized grafting system for cassava 
propagation, especially in Africa. In Chapter II of this thesis, we established the first cassava 
grafting protocol in Africa. We described an optimized cleft grafting protocol for cassava 
propagation utilizing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly wooden healing chamber 
and a step-by-step procedure with optimum conditions to generate a high grafting success 
rate. Using a top wedge grafting technique with high reproducibility and success rates, we 
developed a straightforward and robust grafting protocol for cassava cultivars. A high 
grafting success rate of 90 % was obtained, and the visual aids developed will enhance their 
reproducibility. The protocol is suitable for mass and efficient cassava propagation. This 
grafting protocol requires less specialized equipment and expertise, making it more 
accessible to farmers and researchers with limited resources to promote the use of grafting 
for cassava growth, yield improvement, and advanced studies such as systemic long-distance 
signaling in plants. 
 Plant grafting is a technique used to join two cut stems. To advance the knowledge 
base in this field, enhance our understanding of grafting biology, and expand grafting to 
phylogenetically distant plant species, the third chapter focuses on systematic and 
comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of accumulated transcriptome datasets from N. 
benthamiana interfamily grafting. Nicotiana benthamiana has been found to exhibit grafting 
capability with phylogenetically distant plant species by accomplishing cell-cell adhesion. 
This interfamily grafting extends the time periods of the tissue healing processes after 
grafting. Following morphological and physiological studies with a time-course transcriptome 
analysis, various biological processes have been revealed to be triggered by this grafting. 
Thus, further elucidation of accumulated datasets is required to describe the processes 
during grafting. In Chapter III of this thesis, we performed a Bayesian network analysis to 
identify crucial gene modules in the transcriptome of N. benthamiana interfamily grafting. 
Our bioinformatics analyses of the transcriptome datasets included threshold-based 
clustering, functional annotation clustering, Bayesian gene network analysis, network 
module analysis, and identification of hub genes. Following distance threshold-based 
clustering, six distinct temporal gene expression patterns were identified in the expression 
data. Gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis for each expression pattern was performed, 
and functional annotation clustering was summarized into treemaps of GO superclusters. 
The Bayesian networks for each gene pattern were constructed using the SiGN-BN HC + BS 
program along with 120 N. benthamiana transcriptome data. Gene modules considered 
modulators for the transcriptome datasets were identified using two module detection 
algorithms: Molecular Complex Detection (MCODE) and GLay. Each gene module was 
characterized by identifying GOs and hub genes as the most interconnected nodes in the gene 
network using the Cytohubba plugin. This study provides further knowledge and enhances 
our understanding of the molecular mechanisms related to interfamily grafting.

1. Introduction 
Egypt has made significant progress in female education over the past few decades. However, 
despite these advancements, the participation of females in economic activity in Egypt has 
not followed suit. The female labour force has declined in Egypt from a share in the total 
labour force of 28% in 1989, to only 17% in 2022.Previous literature has sought to explain 
this paradox, that has been labelled the 'MENA paradox' since similar patterns have been 
observed in other Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries. Explanations in the 
literature belong to two main strands. The first focuses on the supply side and argues for 
the role of culture and gender norms, particularly Islam, in limiting female labour supply. 
The second strand focuses on the demand side and argues that the decline of public employment 
in Egypt in the last few decades is what explains the fall in female participation.  
This research empirically examines whether the seemingly paradoxical decline of females' 
participation in economic activity, or in other words, female labour force participation 
(FLFP), in Egypt, is part of a larger U-shaped trajectory, that could be explained by the 
process of economic development, and more particularly by structural change. This analysis 
is based on the theoretical framework of the Feminization U hypothesis. Accordingly, the 
main question of this research is as follows: 
Is the decline in FLFP in Egypt associated with economic development and structural change?  
 
To answer this question, the research undertakes the following objectives.  
First, the research measures economic development in Egypt on the provincial level, using 
satellite nighttime lights data and machine learning; second, it examines whether a U-
shaped relationship is evident between female labour force participation (total and 
disaggregated by age cohorts and levels of education) and economic development in Egypt, 
and measures the effect of a recent policy shock, a structural adjustment program in late 
2016, that has seemingly interrupted this U-shaped trajectory; third, the research examines 
whether structural change, through sectoral growth, could explain the dynamics of FLFP 
change in Egypt, including through spatial spillovers, and breaks down the role of structural 
change into movement between sectors and within sectors; fourth, the research discusses the 
roles of social/ gender norms and policy settings in Egypt, and how they interact with 
economic development and structural change to influence FLFP dynamics.  
Finally, the research provides conclusions and policy implications to foster FLFP in Egypt. 
2. Methods and data 
This research builds novel datasets on the provincial level in Egypt, spanning 1992-2022 
for all the variables used. It extracts nighttime lights data from satellites, and digitizes 
crop area and population data from archival sources, to use them to estimate unavailable 
subnational output data. It also digitizes, cleans, and computes a dataset for provincial-
level female labour force participation and sectoral growth from archival sources. The 
research uses multiple quantitative methods in the analyses, to address the various 
objectives. The methods used include static and dynamic panel data models; machine learning; 
interrupted time-series analysis; spatial econometrics; and shift-share decomposition 
analysis. 
 
3. Main results 
The analyses in this research provide robust evidence that the change in female labour 
force participation in Egypt in the last three decades followed a U-shaped trajectory that 
is associated with economic development, consistent with the Feminization U hypothesis. 
This trajectory was interrupted in its rising part with a policy shock in late 2016, that 
reversed the trend downwards. 
Furthermore, the research shows that the U-shaped trajectory was driven by a movement of 
female labour out of agriculture and into services, consistent with the hypothesis. This 
finding is corroborated by further results that FLFP growth is positively associated with 
the direct growth/decline of agriculture, manufacturing, and white-collar services, as 
predicted by the hypothesis. It also shows that only the manufacturing sector has a spatial 
spillover effect as well on the growth of FLFP. 
 
4. Originality 
This research is the first, to the best of my knowledge, to explain the dynamics of FLFP 
change in Egypt, through the lens of economic development and structural change. In other 
words, it is the first research to empirically test whether the Feminization U hypothesis 
could explain the MENA paradox in Egypt. In addition to this overarching contribution, the 
research has several others pertaining to its various objectives. It is the first to 
estimate the provincial-level output in Egypt using nighttime lights, relying on official 
provincial-level output data; it builds a novel female labour force and sectoral growth 
datasets; it is also the first research to empirically test the effect of the 2016 policy 
shock on FLFP in Egypt; and the first to examine the direct and indirect (spatial spillover) 
association between sectoral growth and FLFP growth in Egypt. 
 
5. Discussion and implications 
The findings of this research provide a different explanation for the decline in FLFP in 
Egypt, compared to the previous literature. The change in FLFP in Egypt is largely driven 
by economic dynamics, mainly economic development and sectoral growth. The more 
deterministic explanations in the literature, including culture and public employment 
preferences, could still be significant, but mainly through their effect on development and 
structural change patterns. These findings have substantial policy implications for 
fostering FLFP in Egypt. They highlight that sector-specific policies, particularly 
industrial policies, that are not even necessarily female-oriented could play a major role 
in promoting FLFP growth in Egypt.

鋼構造の柱と梁から成る構造架構、Moment-resisting frame（以降 MRF）は、施工の
容易さや開放的な空間構成を実現できることから、建築構造に広く用いられている。
近年、レジリエントな都市づくりや性能評価に基づく設計の概念が進展する中で、高
度な非線形挙動を伴う条件において構造システムの耐震性能を的確に評価すること、
そして地震後の都市機能を迅速に回復させることが、耐震工学分野における重要な課
題となっている。柱梁接合部は、MRF において も重要な構成要素であり、これまで
に多数の接合部破壊実験が行われ、耐震設計に重要な知見が蓄積されてきた。しかし、
これらの研究は切り出した境界条件のもとで実施されており、連続床スラブによる合
成効果、梁交差領域の柱パネルゾーン降伏、大変形領域における MRF の幾何学的非
線形不安定性、それに伴う構造内の応力の再分布等の要因が考慮されていない。全体
フレームにおける複雑な物理応答に対する理解は、現在も地震後の調査記録の知見に
依存しており、限定的である。本研究では、大変形領域における合成床スラブが柱梁
接合部性能に与える影響を実験的に明らかにし、接合部靭性評価への合成効果の合理
的な反映を試みた。また、全体フレームの震動台実験および有限要素（以降 FE）解析
に基づき、フレーム作用が柱梁接合部性能に及ぼす具体的な影響を検討した。さらに、
複数の地震後補修手法を提案し、実大の柱梁接合部に対する一連の載荷実験および再
現 FE 解析を通じて、総合的な設計法を整備した。本論文は、柱梁接合部および全体
フレームにおける耐震性能評価、並びに構造補修に関する実験的検討および数値解析
に関する内容、全 9 章で構成されている。 
第 1 章では，序論として，研究背景と目的を述べた。 
第 2 章では、1994 年ノースリッジ地震および 1995 年兵庫県南部地震における鋼構
造建物の被害事例を概観し、それを契機として進展した柱梁接合部に関する研究と、

それらの知見がどのように設計指針へ反映されたかを整理した。特に、柱梁接合部の
耐震設計の課題である、（1）床スラブによる合成効果、（2）柱パネルゾーンの降伏
設計、（3）フレーム作用が柱梁接合部および構造全体の崩壊メカニズムに及ぼす影響、
（4）地震後の柱梁接合部の補修性能、に焦点を当てて調査と考察を行った。 
第 3 章では、角形鋼管柱を用いた柱梁接合部の実験データに基づき、材料および幾
何学的非線形性、床スラブと柱・梁の支圧と滑り挙動、初期欠陥などを総合的に考慮
した FE モデルを構築した。特に、床スラブの存在による塑性中立軸の移動に伴い柱
フランジに生じる面外変形に着目し、その挙動が接合部の変形性能に及ぼす影響を定
量的に評価した。その上で、柱梁接合部の合成効果を考慮した崩壊機構を新たに提案
し、強度評価式を構築し、既往実験結果と比較することでその妥当性を検証した。 
第 4 章では、第 3 章の接合部モデルを基にサブフレームモデルを開発し、フレーム
作用の具体的なメカニズムとそれが梁端挙動に与える影響を検討した。床スラブの引
張側と圧縮側における軸耐力および軸力の伝達経路の違いによって、梁に軸方向の拘
束が形成される過程を明らかにし、それが接合部の変形性能に与える影響を分析した。
また、パラメトリック解析を通じて、異なる荷重履歴および梁せい条件におけるフレ
ーム作用の影響度の違いについて検討した。 
第 5 章では、MRF を対象とした振動台倒壊実験に基づき、詳細な幾何学情報を反映
したソリッド要素による MRF 全体の FE モデルを構築した。動的解析においては、屋
上階の変形角が 0.06 rad に達するまでの応答を 5%以内の誤差で予測し、梁端・パネル
ゾーンの局部挙動を正確に再現できた。柱梁接合部モデル・1 層切り出しフレームモ
デル・全体フレームモデルを比較し、応力伝達経路、柱による梁への軸方向拘束、お
よび P-Δ効果などの影響が、梁端の弾塑性応答に及ぼす影響を多角的に分析した。 
第 6 章では、パネルゾーンの降伏設計を採用した 10 階建て鋼構造 MRF の震動台試
験を対象に、パネルゾーンの弾塑性応答を計測、評価した。曲面シェル要素を用いて
構築した FEモデルは、構造フレーム全体および部材レベルの挙動を高精度で再現し、
誤差は 10%以内に収まった。パネルゾーンの降伏により形成される塑性ヒンジは低層
階から高層階までほぼ均等に分散し、局所的な層崩壊は発生しない全体メカニズム型
の挙動を呈した。 
第 7 章では、既存建物を対象に、古い設計規範が適用された旧式柱梁接合部を対象
に、ウィングプレートを用いた修復手法を提案し、地震後の迅速かつ効率的な構造回
復法の実用化を目指した。旧式接合部を破断まで載荷し、修復後に再度載荷を行うこ
とで各修復手法の有効性を検証した。床スラブの無い鋼梁では上フランジの補強が必
要である一方、合成梁では下フランジに対するウィングプレートの溶接のみで強度と
変形性能が回復できることを示した。さらに FE 解析によりウィングプレート寸法が
性能に及ぼす影響を網羅的に評価し、汎用性の高い修復法として取りまとめた。 
第 8 章では、第 7 章で提案したウィングプレート修復法の知見に基づき、取替可能
なレジリエント構造修復手法を提案した。梁ウェブおよびフランジの一部を切除し、
損傷部と応力伝達部を分離し、交換可能な補剛材により、損傷制御および迅速な部材
交換を実現できた。初回載荷および修復後再載荷に加え、損傷した補剛材交換後の再々
載荷を実施した結果、本修復法では梁端の変形性能およびエネルギー吸収能力が既存
接合部に対して大幅に向上するとともに、取替機能により優れたレジリエンス性能を
有することが確認された。 
第 9 章では，結論として，本研究から得られた知見と今後の課題について纏めた。

１．プログラムの概要
短期日本語プログラム（NUSTEP）は，名古屋大学
と学術協定を締結する大学に在籍中の正規学生を対象
とした約2週間の集中プログラムである。プログラム
の目標は以下の3つである。
（1）  日本語授業の授業を核とした日本語学習で，日本
語の運用能力を高める。
（2）  専門講義の受講や図書館などの本学施設の利用を
通じて，名古屋大学の教育・研究環境を体験する。
（3）  日本文化体験・本学学生との交流会・見学旅行を
通して，日本の文化・社会についての理解を深め
る。
2024年度の開講期間は，2025年2月3日 （月） から
2月17日 （月） までで，4つの国・地域の12大学から
18名の学生を受け入れて実施した。
なお，このプログラムは，COVID-19の感染拡大に
より2020年度の2月以降は，中止となったり，オンラ
インでの実施（2021年7月，2022年2月，2022年7月）
を行っていたりした。2025年度は，久しぶりに海外の
協定大学から学生を迎えての実施であった。
２．カリキュラム
カリキュラムは，先に述べた3つの目標に対応した
内容の授業や活動を，偏りなく配置していく形で編成
した。（具体的な日程は下記の日程表を参照）

ここでは，3つの目標に対応させた「日本語授業」
「専門講義」「日本文化体験」の3つの項目に分けて，
授業・活動について解説する。
（1） 日本語授業
日本語授業は，2月4日（火）～7日（金），10日（月）
～14日（金）の午前中（9：00～10：30，10：45～12：15）に
配置し，90分授業で計16コマを実施した。
日本語授業の到達目標は以下のように設定した。
・ 日本の社会・文化について学んだことや実際に体験
したことを自身の意見を交えながら学術的な形式で
発信できる。
この目標に沿って，プログラムの修了試験として，グ
ループでのポスター発表が14日 （金） に設定されてい
る。それまでの授業では，①発表のテーマ選定や深化
に資する内容の素材（読み物・動画）を読解・視聴し
た後に意見交換すること，②グループで発表テーマに
ついてのデータ収集や提示方法について議論すること
で，徐々にポスターの作成（完成）に向けて準備がで
きるような構成になっている。
今回の発表で，各グループが選んだテーマは下記の

（2） 専門講義
専門講義は，以下の2つを実施した。
・ 防災・減災学（レレイト・エマニュエル　工学部講
師　減災連携研究センター兼任教員）
・ 外国語教育学（當作靖彦　カリフォルニア大学サン
ディエゴ校名誉教授）
防災・減災学の講義は，大学内にある減災連携研究
センター（減災館）で実施し，施設の見学も同時に
行った。外国語教育学の講義は，言語教育センターの
キックオフシンポジウム「未来にはばたけ！ことばの
教育」に講演者として招聘した當作靖彦氏による特別
講演「未来戦略としての外国語教育」を，参加者にも
聞いてもらう形で行った。
そのほか，4日 （火） に実施したキャンパスツアー
では，本学の図書館にも行き，チューターから利用方
法の説明も受けた。
（3） 日本文化体験
日本文文化体験として，以下の活動を実施した。
・着物着付け体験
 外部講師を招聘し，前半は着物についての説明，後
半は浴衣を着る実習という構成で行った。
・美術館ツアー（愛知県美術館）
 愛知県美術館で常設展を観覧し，絵画を中心とした
日本と世界の美術について学んだ。
・茶道体験（兼本学学生との交流会）
 本学の茶道部の学生に依頼し，学内の茶室「白蓮庵」
で行った。これは，本学学生との交流会も兼ねてい
る。
・見学旅行（博物館明治村・犬山城）
 明治時代の建造物を保存・展示している博物館明治
村と，国宝建築である犬山城を見学し，日本建築に
ついて学んだ。
上記以外にも，学生交流会（本学の留学経験のある
学生と，コミュニケーションしながらゲームを楽しむ
イベント），ホームビジット（個別に日本の家庭を訪問
する活動，希望者のみ）も行った。これらは，個別具
体的なコミュニケーションの中で，日本の文化・社会
についての理解を深める機会があることを期待したも
のである。
３．参加者
今回は，学術協定を結んでいる13大学から計40名の
応募があった。日本語能力と意欲の点から選考を行
い，12大学の18名を受け入れることとなった。以下が
その内訳である。

４．運営委員会
実施にあたっては，言語教育センター日本語教育部
門・国際本部・教育推進部の関係教職員から構成され
る NUSTEP 運営委員会を組織した。2025年度のメン
バーは下記の12名である。

ここでは，日程・内容・参加費，プログラム受入れ学
生の選考などについて審議を行った。また，運営・実
施についての助言・助力も得た。
５．今期の評価
今期のプログラムについて「参加者募集・選考」「内
容」の2つの観点から振り返る。
（1） 参加者募集・選考
海外から学生を迎えて対面で実施していた最後の回
の2019年7月のプログラムでは参加費を６万円として
いた。このような低廉な価格で実施できたのは，本プ
ログラムが協定大学へのサービスや，その後の大学院
への留学につなげる広報として位置づけられ，大学本
部からの経費により運営費の大部分が賄われていたた
めである。その後，大学を取り巻く環境も変化し，こ
のようなプログラムは受益者負担を原則として運営さ
れるようになった。また，物価の値上がりもあり，今
回は14万円に値上げしての実施となった。この価格に
決まる前には，他大学の同様のプログラムについて調
査し，14万円は，他大学と比べても魅力的な価格であ
ることを確認していた。しかし，どの程度の応募があ
るかは未知数で，コーディネーターとしては不安を抱
えての募集であったが，当初予定していた定員16名を
大幅に上回る40名からの応募があり，定員を2名増員
しての実施となった。この点で，新しい価格での参加
者募集は，成功だったと言える。
参加者の選考については，書類だけでは日本語力の
判断が難しかった3名について，オンライン面接を実
施した。このうち2名については，短時間のやり取り
の中で，プログラムに参加可能なレベルの日本語能力
の有無を確認できた。一方，書類選考で参加を認めら
れた参加者の中には，JLPT で N2に合格していても，
「話す・聞く」がかなり他の参加者と比べて差があり，
他の参加者の助けを借りながら，活動に参加するとい
う光景も見られた。参加者の間に日本語能力の差があ
ることは当然のことであり，参加者間での助け合い
は，お互いの信頼感や助ける側の効力感にもつながる
など，良い面もある。ただし，あまりに差があると，
プログラムの円滑な進行に支障が出る可能性もあるた
め，今後の選考方法については検討する必要がある。
（2） 内容
本プログラムでは，修了試験の後，参加者に対し
て，プログラム内容に関するアンケートを実施してい
る。プログラムは，個々の内容について「とても満足」
「まあまあ満足」「どちらでもない」「不満」「とても不
満」の5段階で評価をしてもらう形式である。今回は，
全体的に高評価が得られたが，特に評価が高かったの
は，「着物着付け体験」「日本語授業」「名大生との交流
会（ゲーム）」「名大生との交流会（茶道体験）」であっ
た。「着物着付け体験は」94％が「とても満足」を，そ
れ以外の3つは89％が「とても満足」を選び，残りの
回答も「まあまあ満足」であった。参加者が記述した
評価コメントを見ると，「着物着付け体験」は新鮮さ，
「日本語授業」は内容の興味深さと活動のバラエティが
評価された。「名大生との交流会（ゲーム）」は学生と
たくさん話せたこと，「名大生との交流会（茶道体験）」
は，茶道を体験できたこと自体が評価されていた。
一方で，やや低い評価となったのが，「専門講義②
（外国語教育学）」であった。「とても満足」が33％で，
「まあまあ満足」が50％となっていた。これは，この講
義が，言語教育センターのキックオフシンポジウムの
特別講演に相乗りして実施したことが影響していると
考えられる。内容自体については，「面白かった」との
コメントが複数見られたが，このプログラムのために
デザインされた講義でないため，一部の参加者にとっ
て，使用されている日本語が難しく，十分な理解がで
きなかったようであった。先ほど触れた，参加者の日
本語能力の差のことと合わせて，専門講義の理解を促
進する方策についても考えていきたい。

１．コースの概要
セルフスタディ日本語は，日本語を学びたいが学期
中は研究や専門の勉強などで忙しく対面授業に参加で
きない人や，対面授業を履修しているがさらに追加で
学びたい人向けに，Web 上で教材の提供・回答の採
点・添削等を行うコースである。中上級の学習者向け
の読解・作文コースと初級から中級の学習者向けの漢
字コースの2種類があり，学習管理システム（LMS）
である moodle を用いて行っている。言語教育セン
ターのすべての日本語プログラムは原則リアルタイム
型の対面授業で実施されたが，このコースはオンライ
ンによる非同期のオンデマンド型の授業として実施さ
れた。
２．受講状況
今年度のセルフスタディ日本語コースの受講状況は
以下に示す表1と表2の通りであった。登録者数は履
修登録を行った人の数を，受講者数は一度でもコース
にアクセスした人の数を，修了者数は各コースの修了
要件を満たした人の数を示している。

今年度のセルフスタディ読解・作文コースの修了者
数（14課中10課以上60％以上の成績）は春学期０名，
秋学期1名であった。

今年度のセルフスタディ漢字コースの修了者数（10
課中80％以上の成績）は春学期2名，秋学期０名で
あった。
３．総括と今後の展望
今年度のセルフスタディ日本語コースの登録者数
は，全学向け日本語プログラムの他の対面授業の登録
者数と比べても，遜色ない程度に多かったと言える。
しかし，昨年度のセルフスタディ日本語コースの登録
者数と比べると，3分の2程度に減少していた。ここ
数年，コロナ禍の影響により，オンライン授業への
ニーズが高まり，その効果も注目を集めていた。しか
し，近年再び対面授業に注目が戻り，オンライン授業
へのニーズは若干下降傾向にあるのかもしれない。
また，実際にコースに一度でもアクセスした受講者
数は，かなり少ない傾向が続いている。コース開始以
降も定期的に登録者に対してメールで連絡を行い，参
加を促しているが，大きな改善が見込めていないのが
現状である。実際に学期が始まってみると，対面の授
業などが忙しく，このコースへのアクセスは優先度が
低い可能性が考えられる。
なお，受講者数に対する修了者数の割合は，対面授
業の水準で考えれば低いもの，このコースがオンデマ
ンド型のオンラインであることを鑑みると低くはない
と言える。受講者が自律的に学習できる読解や漢字の
クイズ問題に加え，エッセイ作文問題や漢字を用い
た作文問題については担当教員からコメントによる
フィードバックを行っている。これらの工夫が功を奏
していると考えられる。
以上のことから，このような受講者が自分のペース
でいつでも学習できる環境が用意されていることには
意義があると考えられる。今後も受講者のニーズを伺
いながら，引き続き利用しやすいセルフスタディ日本
語コースの運営を続けていきたいと考えている。

１．背景
入門講義「日本文学 I」は，上級レベル日本語学習者
向けの選択クラスであり，近代文学作品の講読を通し
て日本文化や日本語表現を考えることを目標としてい
る。15回の授業のうち4回を近代短歌にあて，学習者
による解釈と現代語訳を取り入れている。2024年度秋
学期は，中国，香港，台湾，韓国，ベトナム，アメリ
カ，オーストラリア，ノルウェー，タイ，トルコ，イ
ンドネシアを文化背景とする約30名が受講した。
短歌の形式を理解し表現する際，拍で捉えることに
苦労する学習者が多い。三十一文字というルールに気
を取られて，短歌を味わうこと，自由に表現すること
ができていないのではないかと感じられることもあ
る。そこで2024年度秋学期は，ことばのリズムや表現
の楽しさをより感じられるようにするステップを導入
に組み入れ，学習者の意図に留意したフィードバック
を行った。本報告では，この2点を中心に，短歌の現
代語訳の活動について述べる。
２．授業の進め方とポイント
これまでと同様に短歌は与謝野晶子の『みだれ髪』
から数首を選択し，ことばの意味や情景を画像も交え
て解説した。俵万智の『チョコレート語訳　みだれ髪』
を解釈の助けとすると共に，現代語訳に際してのこと
ばの選び方や訳の方法も学んだ。また，時代背景につ
いて，自文化と比較し討論を行った。課題とする六首
については，ことばの意味の解説のみ行い俵訳は提示
せず，最低三首を現代語訳することを課した。まずグ
ループで一首を訳しクラスで共有した後，個人作業に
移った。
これに先立って，定型詩としての短歌に親しむため
に行った工夫は以下のとおりである。
①　リズムに親しむ
まず，日本語では5拍，7拍を基本とする韻律が心
地よく耳になじむものであることを初回に紹介した。
交通安全や防災の標語など，生活において大切な事柄
が，五七五や七七の韻律で表されることで記憶に残
る。俳句や短歌のような芸術でなくとも，日本語母語
話者にとってこのリズムが非常に身近なものであるこ
とを，学習者と共に手を叩いて拍を確認しながら音読
し，確認した。
②　他言語と並べて鑑賞する
短歌を日本語以外の詩と並べて示し，詩にはリズム
や決まりがあることを意識できるようにした。日本の
高校の授業などで取り上げられる漢詩や英詩を中国語
や英語の母語話者に音読してもらい，響きやリズム，
ルールを共有した。そして，これらの詩が主に近代に
七五調などで日本語訳された例を紹介し音読した。受
講者は，日本語の詩にこのリズムが好まれて使われる
様子を改めて確認していた。
③　自分の言語の詩を紹介する
「詩を味わう」という観点から，学習者の言語の詩
をクラスで共有した。積極的に自文化の詩の特徴を説
明できる学習者にはその時間をとったほか，全員が関
われるように，名古屋大学の LMS である TACT の
〈フォーラム〉に自分の言語の詩（の一部分）を書き込
むよう指示し，ひとりずつそれを音読した。最初は恥
ずかしがる様子も見られたが，クラス全体が熱心に聞
き，拍手も起きて，自信をもって音読する雰囲気がで
きていった。全く知らない言語であっても詩の持つリ
ズムを感じ，ことばの響きの美しさを味わうというこ
とを，教師を含めクラス全体で体験した。
この後，先に述べた手順で解釈と現代語訳の実践に
入った。課題は，タイプして TACT の〈課題〉に提出
することとした。現代語訳にあたっては，文字の数に
とらわれずリズムで考えた方がよいことを伝えた。取
り組んでいる間は，見回って質問や相談を受けた。
提出された現代語訳は最終的に冊子形式にして発表
時に配布する。この冊子作成の前に，個別にフィード
バックを行った。以前は，挑戦することを重視して，

学習者の間違いを細かく直すことはしなかったが，留
学生にとっては文学の授業も正確な日本語表現を学ぶ
場であることを考え，現在は丁寧なフィードバックを
心掛けている。加えて2024年度秋学期は，受講者の使
いたい表現を尊重すること，引き出すことに，より留
意した。明らかな文法の間違いには修正案を，意味が
伝わらない表現については提案と説明を求めるコメン
トを，歌の解釈を間違えているのではないかと思われ
る表現には再度の解説を付したうえで，意図的である
のか等，意向を確認した。表記についても，漢字の間
違い，漢字とかなの区別，濁点の有無等に疑問があれ
ば受講者に確認した。句読点やスペースの有無，改
行，名前の表記まですべてが自分の「表現」となるこ
とも意識させた。30人近い受講者の複数の短歌の訳を
チェックするのは労力を要するが，提出から発表まで
の間に冬休みをはさんでスケジュールを設定すること
と，TACT を利用して効率的にやりとりをすることで
対応できた。
発表ではひとりずつ自分が一番よくできたと思う訳
を読み上げ，工夫した点や感想を述べた後，クラスメ
イトと教師がコメントした。
３．今後に向けて
学期末の感想には「短歌の現代語訳が楽しかった」
というコメントが複数あり，導入の一連の活動は，難
しそう見える定型詩の短歌を身近に引き寄せるきっか
けになったのではないかと考える。特に，様々な背景
を持つ学習者が日本語で日本文学を学ぶ授業の中で自
分の言語を発信したとき，自文化に対する誇りもうか
がえ，それをクラスで共有することはよい学びになっ
た。
またフィードバックに対して，教師からの提案を
そのまま受け入れるだけでなく，「こういうことを言
いたいのだが，この表現ならどうか」「こういう意味
で使っているが，間違っているか」という受講者から
の応答もあった。自分のことばで表現したい，よりよ
い表現を目指したいという気持ちが伝わり，丁寧に
フィードバックする意義を感じた。
留学生向けの本授業は，日本文化を考える際，異文
化との比較の視点を持つことを目標のひとつとしてい
る。日本の知識を深めることは無論重要であるが，留
学生ならではの視点をもって考える授業を構成してい
きたい。
