    Study on bridge inspection by optical measurement method without using temporary scaffold rint

    We have used quantum chemistry computations, in conjunction with isodesmic-type reactions, to obtain accurate heats of formation (HoFs) for the small fullerenes C20 (2358.2 ± 8.0 kJ mol-1), C24 (2566.2 ± 7.6), and the lowest-energy isomers of C32 (2461.1 ± 15.4), C42 (2629.0 ± 20.5), and C54 (2686.2 ± 25.3). As part of this endeavor, we have also obtained accurate HoFs for several medium-sized molecules, namely 216.6 ± 1.4 for fulvene, 375.5 ± 1.5 for pentalene, 670.8 ± 2.9 for acepentalene, and 262.7 ± 2.5 for acenaphthylene. We combine the energies of the small fullerenes and previously obtained energies for larger fullerenes (from C60 to C6000) into a full picture of fullerene thermochemical stability. In general, the per-carbon energies can be reasonably approximated by the "R+D"model that we have previously developed [ Chan et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2019, 15, 1255-1264 ], which takes into account Resonance and structural Deformation factors. In a case study on C54, we find that most of the high-deformation-energy atoms correspond to the sites of the C-Cl bond in the experimentally captured C54Cl8.In another case study, we find that C60 has the lowest value for the maximum local-deformation energy when compared with similar-sized fullerenes, which is consistent with its "special stability". These results are indicative of structural deformation playing an important role in the reactivity of fullerenes

    Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing in Kenya, where HIV/AIDS remains a leading cause of death; however, few studies have investigated obesity and hypertension among adults with HIV infection. We conducted a cross-sectional study in Homa Bay, Western Kenya, during 2015 to determine the prevalence of overweight/obesity and hypertension among HIV-infected adults and to identify their risk factors. Results: Anthropometric measurements and a structured questionnaire were administered to adults with HIV infection receiving care at Mbita Sub-county Hospital. A total of 251 HIV-positive individuals were enrolled. More women were overweight (17.2%) and obese (3.6%) than underweight (8.3%). The prevalence of abdominal obesity was high in women (62.7%), especially those aged 30-39 years. The prevalence of hypertension was 9.8% and 11.8% in men and women, respectively. Male participants tended to develop hypertension at an early age. Multivariate analysis showed that female sex was significantly associated with abdominal obesity. Regarding clinical factors, we identified an association between overweight and a history of opportunistic infections, as well as between hypertension and World Health Organization clinical stage. Sixty percent of HIV-infected participants assumed that a very thin body size indicated HIV infection. Conclusions: The main findings of this study include a greater prevalence of overweight than underweight as well as a high prevalence of abdominal obesity among women. Social perception toward body size among people with HIV infection might remain problematic. Individuals living with HIV in Kenya should receive preventive intervention for overweight and abdominal obesity, with consideration of relevant social and cultural aspects

    Characteristics of the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism in competitive swimmers and judo athletes

    Studies have demonstrated that motivation, aggression, excitation intensity, competitive spirit, and tolerance to psychological stress are included in major psychological factors affecting the performance of athletes. However, to date, there have not been sufficient scientific studies on the relationship between genetic polymorphisms affecting psychological abilities and competitive strength/sport. In this study, we compared the distribution of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene polymorphism(Val66Met) in athletes between competitive swimming, which needs closed skill without opponents, and judo, which needs open skill with opponents, in order to investigate the genetic basis of sports performance and related psychological factors. The results showed that the prevalence of Met carriers of the BDNF polymorphism associated with vulnerability to psychological stress was lower in judo players, suggesting that judo athletes had a higher stress tolerance. In addition, the prevalence of the BDNF heterozygous group was higher in competitive swimmers, supporting the hypothesis that closed skill sports without opponents receive less stress than open skill sports with opponents, furthre suggesting that they are excellent in motor control and motor learning

    Dimorphic flowers modify the visitation order of pollinators from male to female flowers

    Sexual dimorphism is a pervasive form of variation within species. Understanding how and why sexual dimorphism evolves would contribute to elucidating the mechanisms underlying the diversification of traits. In flowering plants, pollinators are considered a driver of sexual dimorphism when they affect female and male plant fitness in distinct ways. Here, we found that flowers appear to manipulate the behavior of pollinators using sexually dimorphic traits in the dioecious tree Eurya japonica. In this plant, female flowers present a higher-quality reward for pollinators, whereas male flowers have a more conspicuous appearance. Plants benefit by inducing pollinators to carry pollen from male to female flowers, and their sexual dimorphism might thus facilitate pollen movement through pollinator behavior. In two-choice experiments, pollinators frequently moved from male to female flowers, whereas computer simulation suggested that sexually dimorphic traits would evolve if pollinators changed behavior depending on the traits of the flowers they had just visited. These results suggest that the floral traits affecting the visiting order of pollinators have evolved in plants. Using E. japonica, we theoretically show that the induction of sequential behavior in pollinators might be crucial to the evolution of sexual dimorphism in flowers, and our experiments support these findings
