    AIの進歩はめざましく,多くの情報をつないで自ら思考することを既に始めている。ただし,AIは当然ながら人間の脅威ではなく,人間の快適な生活やより良い社会を実現させるものである。平和で民主的な国家及び社会の形成に向けて,人々はAIを使いこなし,人間の強みを発揮しながら,公民として社会問題について考え,社会問題に対し活動することが求められよう。本小論では中等社会系教科の学習に焦点を当て,AI時代に向けて求められる学習として,AIを使いこなすための政策問題を扱う社会問題学習,AI時代に人間が強みを発揮するための論争問題を扱う社会問題学習,そしてAI時代においても積極的に知的に選択・判断しようとする態度を養う社会問題学習の基礎となる学習,以上の三つを挙げて検討を行った。本論文は「九州地区国立大学教育系・文系研究論文集」Vol.7, No.1(2020/10)に査読を経て受理された

    A hornet is fed upon by a spider, Argiope amoena (Araneae: Araneidae)

    I report herein an observational case that Argiope amoena, a common large orb-weaving spider representative in Japan, preyed on a yellow-vented hornet Vespa analis insularis with wrapping. It was previously reported that about half of the diets foraged by A. amoena are composed of Hymenoptera mainly honeybees and ants (Formicidae gen. sp.). However, to my knowledge, the cases that a hornet of Vespa sp., the largest of the eusocial wasps and known as a predator of insects and spiders, is fed upon by A. amoena, are rarely documented in scientific literature; by contrast, some cases, vespine hornets attack Argiope spiders and steal the prey items from the web of argiopids, have been reported. The present study shows that A. amoena is not only a prey fed upon by the vespid but also one of the natural enemies of the yellow jacket such as V. analis

    Human Papillomavirus and Cervical Cancer Knowledge, Perceptions, and Screening Behavior: A Cross-Sectional Community-Based Survey in Rural Philippines

    BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the Philippines. Cervical cancer screening is an effective method to reduce incidence. However, screening utilization is limited. This study aims to assess human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer knowledge, perceptions, and screening utilization, and to investigate factors influencing screening utilization among rural women in the Philippines. METHODS: This cross-sectional community-based study was conducted among 338 rural women aged 20-50 years, with a child under 5 years old registered in one of four public rural health centers in Tacao Island,Masbate Province in October 2017. A questionnaire administered via face-to-face interviews elicited information about demographic characteristics, knowledge, perceived susceptibility and perceived severity of HPV and cervical cancer, and cervical cancer screening utilization. RESULTS: Mean age of participants was 32.5 years. Only 13.9% of participants had ever had cervical cancer screening. Although most women had heard of cervical cancer screening, their knowledge about the cause, risk factors, and preventive measures of HPV and cervical cancer was limited. Older age and higher education status were significantly associated with screening utilization. However, knowledge and perceived susceptibility and severity showed no association. The main reason for having screening was due to a health professional's request or recommendation, and the reasons for not having screening were cost, not having symptoms, and fear of pain or discomfort and/or embarrassment during the procedure.Conclusions: Health education must increase knowledge about HPV and cervical cancer and screening among women, including the nature and progression of cervical cancer, benefits of screening, screening cost, and screening procedure.Health care providers have an important role in educating and motivating women to undergo screening

    The Hong Kong Protests: Background and Development

    The Hong Kong anti-extradition bill protests that began in June 2019 have no signs of dying down. With the “Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act” being signed into law by the U.S. government in November, the Hong Kong protestors have shown to the world that the movement is more than just local but also have stunning butterfly effects on China and the international communities. The movement is still unfolding, and any new developments are difficult to predict. Nevertheless, through organizing and analysing the materials they have collected so far, the authors intend to provide Japanese researchers with a better understanding of the current situations in Hong Kong and important debates related to the protests. This preliminary study aims to explain the background and development of the Hong Kong protests. Yamane, the first author of this paper, who was in Hong Kong in August and September, also shares his first-hand personal experiences related to the protests. The authors then discuss how the Hong Kong problem has become more complicated with the“intervention” by foreign countries. The last part suggests some important directions for further studies

    Nasal high flow improves ventilation during propofol sedation: A randomized cross-over study in healthy volunteers

    Objective: Hypoventilation and carbon dioxide (CO2) retention are common during sedation. The current study investigated the ventilation responses to nasal high flow (NHF) during sedation with propofol. Methods: NHF of 30 L/min and 60 L/min with room air was applied during wakefulness and sedation in 10 male volunteers. Ventilation was monitored by respiratory inductance plethysmography, transcutaneous partial pressure of CO2 (TcCO2), and SpO2. Results: During sedation, NHF of 30 L/min and 60 L/min reduced the TcCO2 by 2.9 ± 2.7 mmHg (p = 0.025) and by 3.6 ± 3.4 mmHg (p = 0.024) without affecting SpO2 and reduced the mean respiratory rate by 3 ± 3 breaths/min (p = 0.011) and by 4 ± 3 breaths/min (p = 0.003), respectively. Conclusion: During sedation with propofol, NHF without supplemental oxygen attenuated CO2 retention and reduced the respiratory rate. The findings show that NHF can improve ventilation during sedation, which may reduce the risk of complications related to hypoventilation
