After the conclusion of the academic agreement in 2017, each university sends students and faculty to the other side for their research as well as for internship-like programs, including joint symposium where they all participated and had research presentations.     Farm use of calcium hydroxide as an effective barrier against pathogens

    application/pdfLivestock farming is affected by the occurrence of infectious diseases, but outbreaks can be prevented by proper sanitary control measures. Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)), commonly called slaked lime, powder is traditionally used as a disinfectant to prevent infectious diseases in livestock. Since Ca(OH)(2) can inactivate a wide variety of pathogens, has a small environmental impact, does not require a disinfection tank (i.e., can be spread directly on the ground) and is produced inexpensively worldwide, it is used for the prevention of epidemics on farms worldwide. Water is essential for the strong alkalinity that underlies its disinfecting effect, but it is unknown how much water is required under field conditions. In addition, Ca(OH)(2) reacts with carbon dioxide in the environment, reducing its pH, but it is unclear how long its degradation takes under actual field use. Thus, we measured the water adsorption ability of Ca(OH)(2)-based disinfectants and its relation to disinfectant activity, as assessed by colony counts and live/dead staining and observation. We found that 15-20% (w/w) water in Ca(OH)(2) was necessary for disinfection to occur in practice. Moreover, we found that the pH of Ca(OH)(2) decreased within about two weeks to one month under actual use in practical conditions and lost its ability to disinfect. We further showed that granules prepared from Ca(OH)(2) and zeolite maintained high alkalinity more than twice as long as calcium powder. These findings will help to establish a suitable method of applying Ca(OH)(2) to protect farms from infectious diseases.journal articl

    Novel magnetic behavior of antiferromagnetic GdTe3 induced by magnetic field

    application/pdfThe effects of magnetic-field strength and direction on the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and specific heat C(T) in GdTe3 having an orthorhombic crystal structure were investigated. Two antiferromagnetic transitions at TN1 = 11.5 K and TN2 = 9.7 K and an anomaly at T1 = 7 K were confirmed in chi (T) under the magnetic field of mu 0H = 1 T. The anomaly at 7 K in chi(T) shows complicated changes in stronger magnetic fields. Such anomaly and novel magnetic effects are observed also in C(T), and phase diagram has been presented. The anomalies around 7 K found in chi (T) and C(T) might originate from the incommensurate CDW state in the ab-plane of GdTe3 compound.journal articl

    Post-disaster waste management with carbon tax policy consideration

    application/pdfGenerally, the activities of post-disaster waste management usually produce high carbon emissions, which can cause damage to the environment. However, the issue of carbon emissions in the post-disaster waste supply chain is neglected. Hence, this paper aims to propose a mixed-integer linear programming model to address the post-disaster waste processing supply chain network design problem with the consideration of a carbon tax policy. The proposed model is developed based on the concept of a mixed strategy of waste separation to reduce carbon emissions. Not only the carbon emission perspective but also the financial perspective for post-disaster waste supply chain management is determined in the objective function. The proposed model was verified and validated by employing a numerical example based on realistic data. Based on the numerical example, the results show that the implementation of a carbon tax policy with the mixed strategy for waste separation can reduce carbon emissions in the post-disaster waste supply chain efficiently.     Preparation of YxYb1-xBa2Cu3O7-delta bulks for superconducting joint between REBCO-coated conductors

    application/pdfIn this study we prepared YxYb1-xBa2Cu3O7-delta (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) powders and bulks to use as intermedium for superconducting joint between REBCO-coated conductors. Superconducting joints are essential in the development of high-field REBCO persistent magnets. All the powders and bulks were sintered at 850 degrees C for 10 hours in air. Bulks were prepared by pressing at 70 MPa. Calcination of the bulks was performed under the same conditions as the powders. Two joint samples between GdBa2Cu3O7-delta-coated conductors were prepared by using the bulk samples. For x=0.1, a superconducting joint was successfully obtained.journal articl

    Bidirectional Beam Propagation Method Based on Axi-Symmetric Full-Vectorial Finite Element Method

    application/pdfWe first present a bidirectional beam propagation method (BiBPM) based on axially symmetric full-vectorial finite element method (Axi-FVFEM). The Axi-FVFEM based BiBPM is a more versatile method than previous scalar BiBPM for axi-symmetric structure. It has potential to offer more efficient analysis than widely used FEM or finite difference based techniques, especially for a large scale waveguide such as a long periodic structure. An air gap in an axi-symmetric waveguide and a fibre Bragg grating (FBG) are analyzed using the Axi-FVFEM based BiBPM for numerical validation, and we compare the numerical results with those of a 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and a modal-based method.journal articl

    This study explores the use of maps as a tool to build a sense of interest and imagined connections with English speaking countries. It examines student perceptions of map usage within English as a Foreign Language(EFL) university classes. By utilizing a Map Perception Questionnaire (MPQ), the study examines perceptions across a range of nodes related to perceived interest, enjoyment, learning and inspiration derived from interactions with maps of various scales. The rationale behind the study is to investigate levels of engagement with the mapping medium from the undergraduate EFL student perspective. The MPQ was administered at a median program waypoint after eight of fifteen lessons had occurred across five separate class groups. All of the aforementioned lessons incorporated map questions and related materials. Results of the study demonstrate a significantly positive response amongst the students to map related activities, and further, that maps generally serve as an inspirational trigger related to travel or experiencing cultures in English-speaking countries. The paper illustrates that maps can be impactful tools in sparking geographical imagination within EFL learners.journal articl

    Aggregation of Mouse Serum Amyloid A Protein Was Promoted by Amyloid-Enhancing Factors with the More Genetically Homologous Serum Amyloid A

    application/pdfAmyloid A (AA) amyloidosis is a condition in which amyloid fibrils characterized by a linear morphology and a cross-beta structure accumulate and are deposited extracellularly in organs, resulting in chronic inflammatory diseases and infections. The incidence of AA amyloidosis is high in humans and several animal species. Serum amyloid A (SAA) is one of the most important precursor amyloid proteins and plays a vital step in AA amyloidosis. Amyloid enhancing factor (AEF) serves as a seed for fibril formation and shortens the onset of AA amyloidosis sharply. In this study, we examined whether AEFs extracted and purified from five animal species (camel, cat, cattle, goat, and mouse) could promote mouse SAA (mSAA) protein aggregation in vitro using quantum-dot (QD) nanoprobes to visualize the aggregation. The results showed that AEFs shortened and promoted mSAA aggregation. In addition, mouse and cat AEFs showed higher mSAA aggregation-promoting activity than the camel, cattle, and goat AEFs. Interestingly, homology analysis of SAA in these five animal species revealed a more similar amino acid sequence homology between mouse and cat than between other animal species. Furthermore, a detailed comparison of amino acid sequences suggested that it was important to mSAA aggregation-promoting activity that the 48th amino acid was a basic residue (Lys) and the 125th amino acid was an acidic residue (Asp or Glu). These data imply that AA amyloidosis exhibits higher transmission activity among animals carrying genetically homologous SAA gene, and may provide a new understanding of the pathogenesis of amyloidosis.journal articl

    ソーシャルデータの解析に基づく個々人のインフルエンサ推定およびブックマーク予測に関する研究

    室蘭工業大学Muroran Institute of Technology博士(工学)application/pdf人々の関心を変化させる手段を確立する事は、商品購入の促進、学習意欲の向上、依存症の緩和治療など、様々なタスクを支援する重要な課題である。筆者はこれまで、ユーザにとって有用と推測される他者のSNSの投稿を提示(根拠と)しながら、それに関連するコンテンツの推薦を行うといった新しい関心誘発のフレームワークを将来ビジョンとして提唱してきた。本論文は、そのビジョンの基盤となる2つのフェーズに関して議論を行っている。1つ目のフェーズでは、想定システムのプロトタイプを実装し、予備実験としてその効果を調査している。具体的には、SNSから抽出された「推薦の根拠」を付随した情報推薦の仕組みによって、その推薦の説得性や受容性、また対象への関心が有意に向上する事を明らかにし、将来ビジョンの社会的意義を改めて主張している。2つ目のフェーズでは、想定システムの社会実装に向けた要素技術の研究開発を行っている。特に、個々人が任意の投稿に対してどの程度関心を持つのかを定量評価し、各ユーザが興味を持つであろう投稿を推測するという技術は、想定システムにおける重要な基礎技術の1つとなる。しかしながら、既存のソーシャルコンピューティングの手法では、その推測方式について未確立のままであった。本論文では、その方式を確立していくために、ユーザ個々人のソーシャルデータを対象とした新しい解析手法を提案し、その有用性を示している。以下にその概要を述べる。まず、他者への反応や関心が示される個々人のソーシャルデータを解析する事で、各ユーザのSNS上でのインフルエンサを推定する手法を提案している。また、全てのユーザに共通した社会的なインフルエンサだけでなく、ユーザごとに異なった個人的なインフルエンサまで推定できるといった先行研究との違いも生み出している。次に、ある投稿とある個人との間の様々な関係性を定式化し、機械学習を行う事によって、各ユーザが任意の投稿に対してブックマークを行うか否かを予め予測可能な事を実証している。加えて、社会ネットワーク上のユーザ群に対してクラスタ分析を行う事で、ユーザタイプに依存したブックマークへの影響因子の違いも明らかにしている。以上、本論文はSNSを組み合わせたより高度な情報推薦の仕組みを確立するために、個々人のソーシャルデータを解析し、SNS上でのインフルエンサを推定する技術や、ブックマークするであろう投稿を予測する技術に関して研究を行ったものである。Discovering a method for changing people’s interests is an important task. For examples, it helps for us to promote various items, to improve students’ motivation to learn, and to care dependent patients. I have advocated a new framework for inducing a user's interests for various things, which recommends various contents to the user while showing several posts that have useful information for the user. This paper discusses two phases that are the bases of this framework. The first phase conducts a preliminary experiment for discussing an expected effect of the assumed framework by using its prototype. Specifically, it shows that a recommender system that advertises items while showing their reasons extracted from SNS, has the effects on the improvement of a user’s receptivity for a new thing and the induction of his/her interest for it. This result helps for me to insist that the assumed framework has the social significances. The second phase develops several component technologies of the assumed framework. Especially, it is one of the important technologies of the assumed framework, to estimate several posts that each user would be interested in (e.g., a post written by a person whom the user likes). However, existing methods in Social Computing cannot realize it. This paper aims to propose a new method that analyzes individual social data and estimates them. Its details are as follows. 1)This paper proposes a method that estimates the influencers for each user by analyzing the user’s reactions to other persons and the user’s interests for other persons in SNS. In addition, it confirms that the proposed method is superior to those of previous researches, because the proposed method can estimate not only a common influencer for all users (Social influencer) but also the different influencers for each user (Personalized influencers). 2)This paper proposes a method that formulates several relationships between each user and a post, and forecasts whether each user would bookmark the post or not. In addition, it examines the differences of the factors for the users to bookmark the post depending on the type of the user by a cluster analysis for them. Summarizing the above, this paper is for an advanced recommender system combined with SNS. It proposes the method that estimates the influencers for each user and the method that forecasts the posts that each user would bookmark.doctoral thesi
