Dynamics Of Single H2 Bubbles During Water Electrolysis
The dynamics of hydrogen gas bubbles growing during electrolysis in H 2 SO 4 on a Pt microelectrode are studied in detail by electrochemical, shadowgraphy and PIV methods. The bubble evolution under potentiostatic conditions is presented in terms of electric current, images and radius of the growing bubble, and the velocity profiles. It allowed to resolve the carpet of microbubbles underneath the growing bubble, the transition to a new oscillatory growth regime and a Marangoni convection around the bubble foot. To substantiate the effect of coalescence and of the electrostatic effect on the bubble departure diameter, a salt (sodium sulfate) was added to regulate the pH and the ionic strength of the electrolyte
Sensor based concept for PEM fuel cell development based on the IPEK-X-in-the-Loop approach
The development of PEM fuel cell systems can be further improved, if the interactions between the different development levels are considered. The IPEK X-in-the-loop approach allows connecting the operating conditions measured locally at the fuel cell components, like the bipolar plate with data from the drivetrain and the fuel cell system. Measurement data taken from micro sensors can be transmitted to control the fuel cell system components. The mixed virtual-physical approach allows emulating different types of components instantly and facilitates the optimization of fuel cell components and operating strategies. With this development method the fuel cell and the fuel cell system components as well as the operating controls can be improved with respect to power dynamics, power density and lifetime
Improving End-Of-Line Quality Control of Fuel Cell Manufacturing Through Machine Lerning Enabled Data Analysis
For an economically sustainable fuel cell commercialization, robust manufacturing processes are essential. As current quality control is time-consuming and costly for manufacturers, standardized solutions are required that reduce cycle times needed to determine cell quality. With existing studies examining durability in field use, little is known about end-of-line detection of cell malfunctions. Applying machine learning algorithms to analyse performance measures of 3600 PEM fuel cells, this work presents a concept to automatically classify produced fuel cells according to cell performance indicators. Using a deep learning autoencoder and the extreme gradient boosting algorithm for anomaly detection and cell classification, models are created that detect cells associated with potential cell malfunctions. The work shows that the models developed predict key performance features in an early stage of the quality control phase and contributes to the overall goal of achieving cycle time reduction for manufacturers quality control procedures.Für eine wirtschaftlich nachhaltige Kommerzialisierung von Brennstoffzellen sind robuste Herstellungsprozesse unerlässlich.

Adaptive User Interface for Automotive Demonstrator
The BlackPearl in the Computer Engineering Department is an Automotive
Demonstrator, which has a variety of sensors, and users can control these via the
server. The server is responsible for the remote interaction, the Smart Queue, and the Raspberry Pi display for human interaction.
The Automotive Demonstrator consists of four components, which are installed on the CE-Box: Main QML Application, Main Server, Live Stream, and Smart Queue. All of these servers are running on three single-board computers (Raspberry Pi 3B): Main, BlackPearl, and Camera servers. The Automotive Demonstrator is built with the latest version from both Qt and NodeJS, and the components can access, store and exchange the data in JSON format. The BlackPearl will be controlled via four types of interaction methods: Web server, Voice commands (Sparrow), Pi Display, and Gamepad.
The outcome of this thesis is a configurable and adaptive User Interface for Automotive Demonstrator, and this can be easily updated, customized, and accessible for new applications without the need to update or rebuild the program
The focus of the present cumulative dissertation is on four scientific investigations that deal with the human vibration sensory system. The information obtained from vibrations leads to important regulatory mechanisms, for example to maintain balance and gait. Determining so-called vibration perception thresholds represents a possibility to quantify the functional condition of the somatosensory system. In this context, it is important to control and standardize the measurement conditions that influence the evaluation of the vibration sensory system. The first article of the present dissertation focuses on the role of the contact force with which the probe of a measuring device loads the skin area to be examined (Study I). In the subsequent contributions, the action mechanisms of mechanical skin properties regarding vibration perception are considered from an evolutionary (Study II) and pathological (Study III) point of view. In the last paper, the potential effect of subliminal noise stimulation is examined as a possible exercise therapy intervention to improve sensory performance (Study IV). A comprehensive discussion of the individual contributions is included at the end of the present dissertation. Using the gained knowledge, recommendations are derived to improve the quantification of vibration sensation in clinical and scientific areas. The broadened understanding of the mechanisms of action of different influencing variables regarding vibration sensation supports the targeted research of exercise therapy interventions to increase sensory performance in humans
Methods for Automated Creation and Efficient Visualisation of Large-Scale Terrains based on Real Height-Map Data
Real-time rendering of large-scale terrains is a difficult problem and remains an active field of research. The massive scale of these landscapes, where the ratio between the size of the terrain and its resolution is spanning multiple orders of magnitude, requires an efficient level of detail strategy. It is crucial that the geometry, as well as the terrain data, are represented seamlessly at varying distances while maintaining a constant visual quality. This thesis investigates common techniques and previous solutions to problems associated with the rendering of height field terrains and discusses their benefits and drawbacks. Subsequently, two solutions to the stated problems are presented, which build and expand upon the state-of-the-art rendering methods. A seamless and efficient mesh representation is achieved by the novel Uniform Distance-Dependent Level of Detail (UDLOD) triangulation method. This fully GPU-based algorithm subdivides a quadtree covering the terrain into small tiles, which can be culled in parallel, and are morphed seamlessly in the vertex shader, resulting in a densely and temporally consistent triangulated mesh. The proposed Chunked Clipmap combines the strengths of both quadtrees and clipmaps to enable efficient out-of-core paging of terrain data. This data structure allows for constant time view-dependent access, graceful degradation if data is unavailable, and supports trilinear and anisotropic filtering. Together these, otherwise independent, techniques enable the rendering of large-scale real-world terrains, which is demonstrated on a dataset encompassing the entire Free State of Saxony at a resolution of one meter, in real-time
