Surgical Instruments based on flexible micro-electronics
This dissertation explores strategies to create micro-scale tools with integrated electronic and mechanical functionalities. Recently developed approaches to control the shape of flexible micro-structures are employed to fabricate micro-electronic instruments that embed components for sensing and actuation, aiming to expand the toolkit of minimally invasive surgery. This thesis proposes two distinct types of devices that might expand the boundaries of modern surgical interventions and enable new bio-medical applications.
First, an electronically integrated micro-catheter is developed. Electronic components for sensing and actuation are embedded into the catheter wall through an alternative fabrication paradigm that takes advantage of a self-rolling polymeric thin-film system. With a diameter of only 0.1 mm, the catheter is capable of delivering fluids in a highly targeted fashion, comprises actuated opposing digits for the efficient manipulation of microscopic objects, and a magnetic sensor for navigation. Employing a specially conceived approach for position tracking, navigation with a high resolution below 0.1 mm is achieved. The fundamental functionalities and mechanical properties of this instrument are evaluated in artificial model environments and ex vivo tissues. The second development explores reshapeable micro-electronic devices. These systems integrate conductive polymer actuators and strain or magnetic sensors to adjust their shape through feedback-driven closed loop control and mechanically interact with their environment. Due to their inherent flexibility and integrated sensory capabilities, these devices are well suited to interface with and manipulate sensitive biological tissues, as demonstrated with an ex vivo nerve bundle, and may facilitate new interventions in neural surgery.:List of Abbreviations

A Design Space Exploration of Creative Concepts for Care Robots: Questioning the Differentiation of Social and Physical Assistance
In an interdisciplinary project, creative concepts for care robotics were developed. To explore the design space that these open up, we discussed them along the common differentiation of physical (effective) and social-emotional assistance. Trying to rate concepts on these dimensions frequently raised questions regarding the relation between the social-emotional and the physical, and highlighted gaps and a lack of conceptual clarity. We here present our design concepts, report on our discussion, and summarize our insights; in particular we suggest that the social and the physical dimension of care technologies should always be thought of and designed as interrelated
Numerical Methods for Stochastic Control Problems with Applications in Financial Mathematics
This thesis considers classical methods to solve stochastic control problems and valuation problems from financial mathematics numerically.
To this end, (linear) partial differential equations (PDEs) in non-divergence form or the optimality conditions known as the (nonlinear) Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations are solved by means of finite differences, volumes and elements.
We consider all of these three approaches in detail after a thorough introduction to stochastic control problems and discuss various solution terms including classical solutions, strong solutions, weak solutions and viscosity solutions.
A particular role in this thesis play degenerate problems.
Here, a new model for the optimal control of an energy storage facility is developed which extends the model introduced in [Chen, Forsyth (2007)].
This four-dimensional HJB equation is solved by the classical finite difference Kushner-Dupuis scheme [Kushner, Dupuis (2001)] and a semi-Lagrangian variant which are both discussed in detail.
Additionally, a convergence proof of the standard scheme in the setting of parabolic HJB equations is given.
Finite volume schemes are another classical method to solve partial differential equations numerically.
Sharing similarities to both finite difference and finite element schemes we develop a vertex-centered dual finite volume scheme.
We discuss convergence properties and apply the scheme to the solution of HJB equations, which has not been done in such a broad context, to the best of our knowledge.
Astonishingly, this is one of the first times the finite volume approach is systematically discussed for the solution of HJB equations.
Furthermore, we give many examples which show advantages and disadvantages of the approach.
Finally, we investigate novel tailored non-conforming finite element approximations of second-order PDEs in non-divergence form, utilizing finite-element Hessian recovery strategies to approximate second derivatives in the equation.
We study approximations with both continuous and discontinuous trial functions.
Of particular interest are a-priori and a-posteriori error estimates as well as adaptive finite element methods.
In numerical experiments our method is compared with other approaches known from the literature.
We discuss implementations of all three approaches in MATLAB (finite differences and volumes) and FEniCS (finite elements) publicly available in GitHub repositories under https://github.com/janblechschmidt.
Many numerical experiments show convergence properties as well as pros and cons of the respective approach.
Additionally, a new postprocessing procedure for policies obtained from numerical solutions of HJB equations is developed which improves the accuracy of control laws and their incurred values
Modeling of a Modular Discrete Event Simulation for Fuel Cell Assembly within a Factory Model
Nowadays, shorter product life cycles and fluctuating demand quantities require flexible and adaptable production planning techniques. Fuel cell technology offers an innovative product, for which future demands in terms of quantities and variety are difficult to predict making it hardly possible to plan demand-adequate production capacities. One feasible solution is the application of Discrete Event Simulations (DES) with a high degree of adaptability and scalability. In this paper, a concept for the modular simulation of assembly lines with scalable automation is introduced and applied to an assembly line for fuel cell stacks. The model presents a modular and hierarchical system structure, which allows for adaptability and reusability. The model can be easily integrated on a factory level to study the behavior of parallel assembly lines. For an industrial use case different experiments offer valuable insights for the optimization, the automation and the upscaling of the assembly.Kürzere Produktlebenszyklen und schwankende Bedarfsmengen erfordern heute flexible und anpassungsfähige Produktionsplanungstechniken.
Knowledge matters! - Exploring Drivers and Barriers in the Acceptance of FCEVs as a Sustainable Mobility Solution
The usage of “green” hydrogen as a sustainable alternative to empower vehicles is a promising option for the strongly required reduction of CO2-emissions in the transport sector. For the successful introduction of such new technology, user acceptance is known to be one crucial factor. The presented online survey (N = 207) investigated (1) potential barriers and drivers for the uptake of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and (2) the effect of prior knowledge about FCEVs. Generally, respondents reported aspects connected to environmental friendliness to be main drivers and infrastructural factors (e.g., missing hydrogen stations) as main barriers connected with FCEVs independently from prior knowledge. Besides, results revealed considerable differences between participants with little vs. considerable prior knowledge implying a negative effect of less knowledge in terms of more skeptical assessments.

There are many technical papers on archival appraisal. Most of them are devoted to dealing with specific records. But only a few attempt to answer fundamental questions, such as 'Is it possible to appraise incorrectly?'. Most will not struggle with the answer and will answer 'yes.' But the perspective changes as soon as we ask 'Can you appraise right?'. This may seem banal at first glance, but it is elementary, because in this way the basic problem comes to light: Are there correct and are there incorrect evaluation decisions? Is there an indivisible (archival) truth? Or is everything subjective in the end and therefore always right AND wrong? An understanding about this is more than a philosophical skirmish. It is indispensable for a productive culture of discourse. The key lies in the definition of the goal
Technical drawings and plans describe the construction and development of technical objects.
They explain the structure, function and purpose of plants, instruments and machines. They are the language of the engineer.
The plan collection of the Deutsches Museum is one of the most important and oldest holdings of the archive. Its acquisition began with the founding of the museum in 1903 as a large-scale initiative that was closely linked to the general concept of the Deutsches Museum. Today, the holding offers a comprehensive and unique fund of source material on the history of technology, which will continue to be collected in the future. In the context of the history and composition of the plan collection, the presentation discusses criteria for collection and appraisal of technical drawings and plans in the Archives of Deutsches Museum
