The Tuned Mass Damper as a Subject in Engineering Mechanics Dynamics
MEF [BAP-017 AP004]; TUBITAK [1919B012107199, 1919B012107270]The author acknowledges the support of MEF BAP-017 AP004 research fund, and TUBITAK grants 1919B012107199 & 1919B012107270.The course of Engineering Mechanics Dynamics is one of the most challenging courses for both mechanical and civil engineering programs, among others. But few universities dare to introduce projects to enhance students' curiosity, interest, and engagement toward engineering by constructing do-it-yourself physical prototypes, making measurements, and calculations to compete for the best performance. The intention of this project is to introduce a complex multiple-degree-of-freedom vibration problem in an easy manner, namely, the topic of a tuned mass damper (TMD) applied to earthquake-like oscillations. This type of projects directly addresses all seven student outcomes recommended by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). The project develops critical thinking and inquiry skills by designing and constructing the prototype of a building-like structure and its corresponding TMD; conducting an experiment under certain constraints to test the attenuation after an initial displacement; applying an open-source freeware to plot and measure underdamped oscillations; calculating main vibration parameters; as well as comparing performance results with another teams. Students approach this complex tunning problem by trial-and-error of key TMD parameters, a strategy that sparks fun and gambling to the process and competition for the best performance in attenuation efficiency. Data from direct observation of students' performance, student surveys, reports, presentation videos, office hours, and interviews showed that students enthusiastically responded at all project stages, understood the TMD functioning, and appreciated the value of dynamics in engineering in a more meaningful way than it would be without this type of projects.IEEEWOS:0009867055000322-s2.0-85156178372Conference Proceedings Citation Index – ScienceProceedings PaperUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılmayan - HAYIRHaziranYÖK - 2022-2

Muteri Adaymin Ilem Yapma Ihtimalinin Tahminlenmesi Modeli
In this study, it is aimed to estimate the probability of a customer who comes to the institution for the first time to make a transaction in the next 3 months, using data-driven machine learning models, in order to provide financing to the seller company by assigning the receivables arising from the sale of goods and services in a company actively operating in the factoring sector. Accordingly, it was aimed to directly contribute to the transaction volume on a business basis by acting and taking action with more effective, efficient and correct approaches by finding high-potential and low-potential customers. In this context, provided by KKB (Credit Registration Bureau); The data set to he used in machine learning models was created with feature engineering and exploratory data analysis, using the Risk, Mersis, GIB information of the prospective customers and the historical information of the customers, check issuers, customer representatives and branches kept in the database. Since the leads coming to the institution are in two different types of organizations (Individual and Legal), two different forecasting models were applied. Multiple classification models were tried, and the highest F1-Score of 86% for private companies was obtained with the Random Forest model, and the highest F1- Score for commercial companies was obtained with the Random Forest model with 82%. © 2022 IEEE.2-s2.0-8514188361
Factors affecting site-specific response analysis
The engineering purpose of a site-specific response analysis is to estimate the uniform hazard acceleration spectrum on the ground surface for a selected hazard level. One of the mandatory components for site response analyses is one or more representative acceleration time histories that need to be scaled with respect to the calculated seismic hazard level for the selected site. The selection and scaling procedures of earthquake acceleration records play an important role in this approach. The effects and differences in using two different scaling approaches are studied: scaling with respect to ground motion parameters and response spectrum scaling. A set of homogeneous ground motion prediction relationships are developed for peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity, root-mean-square acceleration, Arias intensity, cumulative absolute velocity, maximum spectral acceleration, response spectrum intensity, and acceleration spectrum intensity based on a uniform set of acceleration records for ground motion parameter scaling.
The uncertainties associated with site response analysis are considered as epistemic and aleatory uncertainties in source characteristics, soil profile, and soil properties. Aleatory variability is due to the intrinsic randomness of natural systems; it cannot be reduced with additional data (Passeri et al. 2020), however; its variability may be modeled by probability distribution functions. Thus, one possibility is to determine the probability distribution of the acceleration spectrum calculated on the ground surface for all possible input acceleration records, site profiles, and dynamic soil properties. The variability in the earthquake source and path effects are considered using a large number of acceleration records compatible with the site-dependent earthquake hazard in terms of fault mechanism, magnitude, and distance range recorded on stiff site conditions. Likewise, a large number of soil profiles may be considered to account for the site condition variability. The uncertainties related to dynamic soil properties may be considered as possible variability of maximum dynamic shear modulus in site response analyses. A methodology is proposed to estimate a uniform hazard acceleration spectrum on the ground surface based on the probabilistic assessment of the factors involved in site response analysis. The uniform hazard acceleration spectra obtained from a case study are compared with the spectra calculated by probabilistic models proposed in the literature.WOS:0007438012000012-s2.0-85122897474Science Citation Index ExpandedArticle; Early AccessUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılmayan - HAYIROcakYÖK - 2021-22Oca

Classification of skin lesion images with deep learning approaches
Skin cancer is one of the most dangerous cancer types in the world. Like any other cancer type, early detection is the key factor for the patient's recovery. Integration of artificial intelligence with medical image processing can aid to decrease misdiagnosis. The purpose of the article is to show that deep learning-based image classification can aid doctors in the healthcare field for better diagnosis of skin lesions. VGG16 and ResNet50 architectures were chosen to examine the effect of CNN networks on the classification of skin cancer types. For the implementation of these networks, the ISIC 2019 Challenge has been chosen due to the richness of data. As a result of the experiments, confusion matrices were obtained and it was observed that ResNet50 architecture achieved 91.23% accuracy and VGG16 architecture 83.89% accuracy. The study shows that deep learning methods can be sufficiently exploited for skin lesion image classification. © 2022 Baltic Journal of Modern Computing.
