Perceiving societal pressure to be happy is linked to poor well-being, especially in happy nations

    No full text
Happiness is a valuable experience, and societies want their citizens to be happy. Although this societal commitment seems laudable, overly emphasizing positivity (versus negativity) may create an unattainable emotion norm that ironically compromises individual well-being. In this multi-national study (40 countries; 7443 participants), we investigate how societal pressure to be happy and not sad predicts emotional, cognitive and clinical indicators of well-being around the world, and examine how these relations differ as a function of countries' national happiness levels (collected from the World Happiness Report). Although detrimental well-being associations manifest for an average country, the strength of these relations varies across countries. People's felt societal pressure to be happy and not sad is particularly linked to poor well-being in countries with a higher World Happiness Index. Although the cross-sectional nature of our work prohibits causal conclusions, our findings highlight the correlational link between social emotion valuation and individual well-being, and suggest that high national happiness levels may have downsides for some.WOS:0007575371000602-s2.0-8512477648435177625Science Citation Index ExpandedArticleUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılan - EVETŞubatYÖK - 2021-22Şuba

Preservice teachers' understandings of division and ratios in forming proportional relationships

    No full text
This study aimed at investigating how preservice teachers' understandings of division and reasoning about ratios support and constrain their formation of proportional relationships in terms of quantities. Six preservice teachers from a middle-grade preparation program in the USA were selected purposefully based on their mathematics performance in a previous course. An explanatory case study with multiple cases was used to make comparisons within and across cases. Two semi-structured interviews were conducted with each pair. The results revealed that preservice teachers who did not explicitly identify different meanings for division struggled to differentiate between the two perspectives on ratios. The results also showed that those teachers had difficulty forming proportional relationships while solving the proportion tasks. These results suggest that explicit identification of the meanings for both types of division is critical to keeping the two perspectives on ratios separate, which is a key aspect for a robust understanding of proportional relationships.WOS:0007715624000022-s2.0-85126763614Emerging Sources Citation IndexArticle; Early AccessUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılmayan - HAYIRMarchYÖK - 2021-22Mar

Analysis of intelligent software implementations in air cargo using fermatean fuzzy CODAS method

    No full text
The chapter focuses on the problem of analyzing and selecting intelligent software in Air Cargo in the concept of Aviation 4.0. First, the notions, problems and challenges linked to air cargo are discussed. Recent developments, ongoing innovative projects and unfilled gaps in the area of intelligent air cargo software are presented. Next, the proposed method to analyze a select software to be used by air cargo companies is described. It is a modified version of one of the recent multi-criteria decision-making methods, called CODAS. Its original, crisp version and its existing fuzzy extensions are first presented. Next, an original extension of the method, using Fermatean fuzzy sets, is proposed. In the application section a logistics company is considered, which is facing the problem of selecting software supporting the air cargo process. The criteria are selected by experts holding various positions in the company, and three alternatives of air cargo software provider are determined. Then, the proposed method is applied to solve the intelligent software selection problem. Finally, conclusion and future research perspectives are given.2-s2.0-8511487161

Does social influence affect covid-19 vaccination intention among the unvaccinated?

    No full text
Conformist social influence is a double-edged sword when it comes to vaccine promotion. On the one hand, social influence may increase vaccine uptake by reassuring the hesitant about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine; on the other, people may forgo the cost of vaccination when the majority is already vaccinated - giving rise to a public goods dilemma. Here, we examine whether available information on the percentage of double-vaccinated people affects COVID-19 vaccination intention among unvaccinated people in Turkey. In an online experiment, we divided participants (n = 1013) into low, intermediate, and high social influence conditions, reflecting the government's vaccine promotion messages. We found that social influence did not predict COVID-19 vaccination intention, but psychological reactance and collectivism did. People with higher reactance (intolerance of others telling one what to do and being sceptical of consensus views) had lower vaccination intention, whilst people with higher collectivism (how much a person considers group benefits over individual success) had higher vaccination intention. Our findings suggest that advertising the percentage of double-vaccinated people is not sufficient to trigger a cascade of others getting themselves vaccinated. Diverse promotion strategies reflecting the heterogeneity of individual attitudes could be more effective.WOS:0008413252000012-s2.0-8513484984837588925Emerging Sources Citation IndexArticleAğustosYÖK - 2021-22Temmu

Moral expansiveness around the world: The role of societal factors across 36 countries

    No full text
What are the things that we think matter morally, and how do societal factors influence this? To date, research has explored several individual-level and historical factors that influence the size of our ‘moral circles.' There has, however, been less attention focused on which societal factors play a role. We present the first multi-national exploration of moral expansiveness—that is, the size of people’s moral circles across countries. We found low generalized trust, greater perceptions of a breakdown in the social fabric of society, and greater perceived economic inequality were associated with smaller moral circles. Generalized trust also helped explain the effects of perceived inequality on lower levels of moral inclusiveness. Other inequality indicators (i.e., Gini coefficients) were, however, unrelated to moral expansiveness. These findings suggest that societal factors, especially those associated with generalized trust, may influence the size of our moral circles.WOS:0008247940000012-s2.0-85133634722Social Sciences Citation IndexArticle; Early AccessUluslararası işbirliği ile yapılan - EVETTemmuzYÖK - 2021-22Temmu
