Mixed Marriage Patterns in Istanbul: Gendering Ethno-religious Boundaries

    No full text
This study focuses on the mixed marriages between individuals from Rum Orthodox, Jewish, and Armenian communities with Muslims, who are legally regarded as ethnic-religious minorities and clustered in the urban geography of Istanbul with the ever-decreasing population. Little attention has been paid into the private sphere dynamics and practices of non-Muslims of Turkey. Hence, this research will try to understand the identity construction of Rum, Jewish, and Armenian communities in the private sphere within the context of mixed marriages. Particularly the gendered structure of the ethno-religious boundaries drawn between the minorities and the wider society are problematised. The chapter benefits from 51 in-depth interviews conducted between 2018 and 2019 with the members of Rum Orthodox, Jewish, and Armenian communities from different social class, age, and gender, who are residing in Istanbul. The data collected through this fieldwork will be presented in the light of the debate in the family and marriage, gender, and minority literature. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.2-s2.0-8514416828

Index Tarihi : 19 Ocak 2024In this study, a model has been developed to predict potential faults in advance based on performance metrics of various fiber-optic internet lines, as well as alarm (fault data) and performance measurement values from the 5 hours prior to the occurrence of the alarm. Performance metrics that vary over time have been analyzed in a time-series format based on alarm numbers, and anomaly detection methods have been used to label the data for any potential patterns that may occur in the performance metrics specific to the alarm. The labeled data was then fed into a classification model to create a model that enables to detect possible patterns in the relevant performance values for the specific fault type. The best performing model was Random Forest Classifier with accuracy and F1 scores of 0.89 and 0.84 respectively.2-s2.0-85184665277Kası

Toward a Novel Neuroscience-Based System Approach Integrating Cognitive and Implicit Learning in Education

    No full text
Emotional-enhanced learning is a meaningful driver of engagement leading to long-term memory retention in learners, however, traditional approaches such as problem-based learning, and project-based learning, among others, do not consider brain-based learning guidelines concerning learner’s emotional experience design. The Neuroscience-based Learning (NBL) technique is a novel neuro-educational approach that applies the implicit neuro-physiological mechanisms underlying vivid and highly-arousal emotion-al experiences leading to long-term memory retention. The NBL is devised from a cybernetic system point of view, by explaining the novel neuro-physiological learning scheme describing the relation among the environment and the learner’s internal mental processes ranging from perceptions, comparison with previous experiences and memories, immediate sensations and reactions, emotions, desires, intentions, higher order cognitive functions, and controlled actions towards the environment. While explaining biological processes, the scheme also relates the types of memory systems with their non-associative and associative learning mechanisms, and the variables that modulate learning. NBL proposes the triggers for a vivid and highly-arousal emotional learning, which are novelty, unpredictability, sense of low control, threat to ego, avoidance (aversion-mediated learning), and reward (reward-based learning). © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.2-s2.0-8514800109

Aile hukuku ile miras hukuku birbiriyle yakından ilgilidir. Bunun neticesinde aile ilişkilerinin zaman içindeki değişiminden miras hukuku da kaçınılmaz biçimde etkilenecektir. Geçtiğimiz yüzyılın başındaki bir sosyal ve ekonomik yapıya ait olan İsviçre Medeni Kanununun miras hukuku hükümlerinde modern ihtiyaçlara cevap vermek amacıyla bir revizyon çalışması yapılmış ve bu çalışmanın bir bölümü 1 Ocak 2023 ...Family law and inheritance law are closely related to each other. As aresult, inheritance law will inevitably be affected by the changes in family relations overtime. The provisions of the Swiss Civil Code, which belonged to a different social andeconomic structure at the beginning of the last century, were revised in order to respond tomodern needs, and a part of this revision entered into force on 1 January 2023. Theregulations that emerged as a result of this effort, which was carried out on the axis ofincreasing the disposable portion of the de cujus and improving the situation of thesurviving spouse, put an end to some debates in the Swiss legal doctrine. In this respect, the revision may also lead to some solutions in Turkish law regarding similar discussionsand may perhaps bring a paradigm shift. The revision conduced us once again towardsseeing that the Turkish legislation regarding the status of the surviving spouse falls behindthe Swiss law. For this reason, the regulations in Swiss law concerning the situation of thesurviving spouse specifically constitute the subject of this study.Hazira

What do pre-service English Language Teachers have to say for their future?

The dignified socio-cultural value attached to the teaching profession is in decline not only in Turkey, but also in many other parts of the world. Previous studies (Aksu et al., 2010; Fray & Gore, 2018; Heinz, 2015) have shown that pre-service teachers might have altruistic, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations at diverse levels when they embark on their teacher education programmes (TEP). It has also been widely studied that pre-service teachers’ initial motivations and conceptualizations of the teaching profession are subject to change over time due to the gap they observe and experience between the theory and practice, precarious employment, lack of financial resources and benefits, low salary, limited opportunities for promotion and professional development, unstable work-life balance, ideological pressures, and demanding parents and educational stakeholders. This study will present the preliminary findings of an on-going research exploring pedagogical beliefs, professional conceptualisations and motives of 20 pre service English language teachers studying their second and third years of a TEP in Istanbul, Turkey. Guided by reflective practice theory (East, 2022; Farrell, 2021), the first data set was obtained from web based logs where participants were guided with questions to reflect on to what extent the training they receive in TEP corresponds to the practice they observe in their internship schools and how this experience reformulates their pedagogical beliefs. The second data set was collected using focus-group interviews where the participants were asked to comment on their motives to choose and continue to practice the teaching profession. The results indicate that pre-service English language teachers have ambivalent beliefs and attitudes toward their future practices, mainly pertaining to the socio-political and economic turmoil in the country, accelerating inflation and challenging living conditions, prevalent notion of native-speakerism in private schools, and technological innovations gradually replacing the role of teachers

Anahtar kelimeler: Blokzincir, akıllı sözleşmeler, milletlerarası özel hukuk, kanunlar ihtilafı kuralları, bağlama noktası, uygulanacak hukukBlockchain technology and blockchain-based smart contracts enable users to do safe, transparent, fast, and cost-effective transactions by eliminating intermediaries. For this reason, blockchain and smart contracts are being used in various international trade sectors. Even though private-permissioned blockchain platforms grant more security and are preferred in international trade, building international smart contracts on public permissionless blockchain platforms where users can do transactions anonymously is also possible. Thus, it is important to determine the applicable law to smart contracts based on public permissionless blockchain platforms in case of a dispute. This thesis examines the connecting factors regulated in the Turkish International Private Law Code according to public permissionless blockchain-based smart contracts. The dissertation mostly concentrates on international commercial contracts and highlights the other rules regulated for special contracts if they differ. While doing this, comparative law rules are also considered to offer solutions and advice

Mankind has wanted to feel safe itself during all the times when they exist in the world. For this, they have tried to develop the practices that could assure public order for itself by revising the safety politics. All these attempts and historical processes have not been able to cease the committing crime by people. This thesis work aims at showing that it is possible to include the practices that are evaluated to be successful into the system by analysing the similar preventive politics alongside searching the new alternative practices in order to struggle the crime. The time to separate for the search to prevent the crime and material capabilities will be useful in transferring to the projects that have positive returns in getting success in terms of sustainable preventive safety politics. In this content, we have tried to evaluate the practicability of the preventive policing practices that are applied in the world in terms of Turkey by touching upon the development of the crime and policing throughout the history under the light of the activities of the public order and law enforcement agency and touching upon the domestic safety politics and policing practices that are applied in Turkey. The role of the works that have been made to improve the crime and guilty to reach to our present public order and to decrease them with their historical process has been argued.
